I saw this in a local flea market and really like it. just wondering if you guys could give me any information on what it is based on the limited information i have so far. It says its a 1968 on the price tag, not working/as is. I called the seller for more details but haven't heard back yet. I was short on time and there was to much junk in the way to try looking it over good. is says Quasar by the controls and the volume slider knob is missing. asking 75 bucks.

I would try to negotiate that price as much as you can-half that price would be more realistic these days, but even at $75 you aren't getting hurt bad. It would be nice to know the condition of the crt. I could be wrong but that looks like a 21 or 22 inch, not the standard 23v (25AP22, etc.) tube. Could be tricky to find a replacement, if that is true.

Thanks for the info. i plan to offer 40 bucks and see which way he jumps...lol. I figure he either thinks its a goldmine or would be happy to have the room in his booth. would finding a replacement volume knob be a difficult task for a set like this?

Is the shaft still there? Those sliders were really bad about breaking off. In that case you'd have to replace the whole control. If all you need is the little knob, I bet somebody on here has one.

there was no shaft sticking out of the slot so I guess I would have needed the whole control if i had bought it. the guy called me and thinks he is sitting on a gold mine...lol. told me it's worth triple his asking price to a collector or for a movie prop. oh well, I still have my Admiral and will just keep looking for a Bakelite Admiral set.

Let him eat it. Eventually he will regret not selling it while he had the chance. If there are a lot of people rushing to pay that kinda money for sets like this, I haven't met them.

Usually that door on those bakelite Admirals is missing. Odd that this set has its, but the channel and fine tuning knobs' missing. But these are fairly common.

I have read how rare the doors are on the old sets. I'm lucky that my current Admiral has the door intact as well. I sure wish I could get that set but all my ''play'' cash is devoted to my 72 beetle project right now plus it's 7 hours each way and about $200ish in fuel in my s-10. I sure hope someone on here picks it up though.

is modular is design for quick service

in the original box. The set is a 25" but was later redesiginated as 23"

I don't even know how to work on these things yet so I don't need a bunch of non-workers around yet. I want it very bad and have spoken to the seller a few times about it. it's just the distance,time off work and fuel price that hinders me. Now if there were someone kinda local that would be willing to grab it for me until I can make it up there I'd be all over it.:D

It may have been Motorola's first mostly solid state set, I think the HV rectifier was tube. It was a Works in a drawer set. It was not the first solid state tv, and no where near the first rectangular picture tube. Not even Motorola's first rectangular CRT. Still it is a unique set and worth saving if the price is right.

It was the first solid state color set, or, mostly solid state. What was the first all solid state color? I used to know. RCA 2000? Or did they use a tube rectifier?

IIRC those Motorolas had a tube rectifier..but it's been at least 10 years since I saw one of those and I'm not even sure I can accurately remember what I had for lunch, so...

Good news for this set, it's sitting in my garage waiting for it's new owner rcafan<-Neil. I spoke to the owners wife this time and got it for $55.00. I'm glad that it will be saved and enjoyed fro years to come.

My first memories of TV are watching a newer Motorola/Quasar WID set in the early 90's, and now that I know what that set was I regret causing it's demise, and want to save one of the exact same chassis someday.

That is not from the cheap line by Motorola simply because it has the cabinet by Drexel. The Drexel cabinets were extra cost. I have the exact same set and cabinet but made a bit earlier because mine does not have Quasar anywhere on it and mine has the original CRT which has a much darker looking screen/phosphor like dark greenish.

Jamie and I met One I-75 and exchanged sets. I picked up the Admiral
he bought near Detroit and the Quasar he picked up for me near
southern Indiana.
The Quasar is complete with a excellent pix. tube and the only fault
being a broken shaft on the vol. control( have the replacement part).
Took some wiggle on the modules to reseat and the set is working
Just dandy
