timmy 06-26-2011, 04:44 PM hey all well i thought i was done but i guess not so here is a question, what possibly would make the screen go blurry from time to time on this ctc15 all caps have been changed now checked into other tubes that may make this do this and tried others including the focus tube. seems after i did the rest of the caps i noticed it. caps in the vert board and the c2 and c3 multi caps were changed with single caps rated somewhat alittle higher. i adjusted the agc and the video peak thinking this may be the cause.so now ill run it awhile and see if its better since adjusting those two. the picture also pulls in on the left about a quarter inch with some scene changes. this seem to have started with the blurry or focus thing after i changed the 8 capacitors which is 4 in each multi cap, i dont know which of the 8 caps between the both muti caps would cause this as each one is for a certain circuit like this focus thing. what is confusing is that the sams says for c3c is 250v 100uf but the cap says on the side 250v 20uf and c3d says 50v 250uf but the cap shows 50v 50uf so i put in what the old caps had on them not what sams show.

timmy 06-27-2011, 02:26 PM well yes it does fluctuates and its around 640 and turn the bright down and it rises to around 800, the more out of focus the less the voltage and its with white pictures that are bright. it clear its hv regulation but im stumped here as to where to go from here. i tried another 3a3, 6bk4, checked the 6cg7. grid voltage is ok at between 118-120v. this all seen to start after changing c2 and ce caps with separate ones for each with slighty higher uf and or voltage.hv stands at 24kv bright down and the hv adjust pot has no affect when turned.also tried another damper with no result. if its low b+ then why after the caps were changed or is it something to do with the hv pot not working.
mstaton 06-27-2011, 02:51 PM your focus voltage is too low. Should be 4-5K volts.
DaveWM 06-27-2011, 03:07 PM I would check the whole HV setup. you need to monitor the cathode current of the HOT, the cathode current of the shunt tube, and the HV at the CRT anode.
the sams should run this down. the shunt generally has a precision 1kv resistor in the cathode circuit, a voltmeter across this will will give the voltage drop which translates into the current. should be between .5v and 1.5v depending on scene brightness and HV setting.
the cathode current on th HOT will be around 180-220ma there are adapaters that have leads in them that break the cathode for a ma meter in its place. I like analog meters for this as its easier to see the needle movement. Here you adj the eff coil to dip to the lowest readings.
there will also be adj for the horz osc, shunting off the sync pulse etc...
are you sure you had the focus voltage?. its the pin with the black lead. For it to be that low it would seem there is something big time wrong, esp if the HV is 24kv. the lower voltage sounds more like a G2 voltage
DaveWM 06-27-2011, 03:19 PM maybe its just blooming? seen this when brighness not setup right (CRT bias/G2 screen settings). mostly I see this on my zeniths, if you setup wrong and then have a sudden bright scene change the screen will partialy bloom, go a bit out of focus, then kind of recover.
you could try reseting the entire grey scale and see if that helps.
oh and if you have one, sub in a new video out tube, if its acting up it can mess up the bias of the CRT cathode voltage.
timmy 06-27-2011, 04:39 PM the problem here is ever since i replaced caps for the c2 and c3 multi caps with singles this seems to have happened, didnt have any of this befor and i also changed caps in the verticle section for a rolling problem but did not cure that but the set worked fine no blurr or focus problem and the longer it stays on the worse the screen gets. im thinking of putting back the wires to the old caps because i dont think the caps in the verticle section would do this, all the values were right on for that section. which video output tube would that be, video 1, or 1&2 or 2, or 3rd. and the kine bias is all the way down all adjustments were made and the bias did not need to be raised.
DaveWM 06-27-2011, 06:38 PM It would be the video out a 12GN7 or 12BY7 something like that. Its the last on before the cathodes of the CRT. Its plate is connected directly to the cathodes of the CRT (thru the service switch and the drive pots) is sets the voltage of the cathode so if the that tube is not right it will effect the plate voltage, which then effects the CRT cathode voltages (and therefore bias), ultimately can cause the crt to draw too much current, which loads down the HV, which then blooms, and if only slight bloom can look like focus problems.
did you double check that focus voltage? I would use a HV prob so as not to load it down too much. if it really is that low (like the other poster said should be 4-5 kv) then it has to be a problem in the focus circuit, and those filter caps are not going to help anything. I have a simpson 260 analog that goes up to 5kv and use that one as well for checking focus voltage.
timmy 06-27-2011, 06:51 PM tried the 12by7 and no change. i had used a fluke dvm and that voltage is what i got so if its going to be 5kv then i would have burned the meter out. i just dont understand what is going on here it was fine befor the multi caps. white screens were worse now its all screens as it has gotten worse.the 700 volts were from the 2 wires of the focus coil . also tried another 1v2 ans 2av2 no luck. i also put a fuse between pin 3-6 of the 6dq5 to ground. maybe the fuse has to much resistance, its half amp 250v.
DaveWM 06-27-2011, 10:16 PM the 4-5kv is what you need at the focus pin on the CRT, you can check that with the same HV probe used on the anode of the CRT.
You need to check there before doing anything else, confirm its the problem.
again, I can't imagine a reason the filter caps could cause the issue, unless something went bad wrong like a reversed polarity (does it use a doubler B+ supply?) causing a major issue with the B+.

timmy 06-28-2011, 07:52 AM chassis is out now looking for problems checked hv pot adjust and all i get out of it is 300k not 500k for what it supposed to be.where is the b+ doubler or what does it consist of, diodes or caps, i really dont mean to sound like an idiot but im trying,lol. from what i understand this set always since i have gotten it going had hv problems because bright up hv is 14kv bright down hv is 24kv seems its not holding hv at 24kv or so with bright up.
DaveWM 06-28-2011, 09:09 AM ok I thought it working fine before a cap change.
the doubler cap is the one with a cardboard cover, its neg is NOT connected to the chassis, therefore ist possilble it could be installed backwards.
Back to the problem, sounds like HV issue. I would do some voltage checks of the B+ per the sams directions. then check both the HOT cathode and shunt cathode as previously described.
You could also try disconnecting the shunt plate to see if the HV comes up to 30kv or so if it does then its prob the shunt.
timmy 06-28-2011, 09:45 AM that cap was one of the first ones i did and all was ok so its not that one.the hv pot dont measure 500k , it shows .512 mohm and 300k ohm in the middle and 61 ohm full clock so thats not right and i took it apart and the resistor it self mostly all the way around is shiny which to me it had got hot it seems.
timmy 06-28-2011, 01:52 PM well the hv pot is good but i did find a possible mistake in the sams or the cap c3 which shows 50v 250uf but the cap shows 50v 50 uf and 250v 100uf but cap shows 250v 20uf this is not good even though the cap says what it says i put what the cap had on it but this set seems to be lacking power somewhere and i am not finding anything wrong and the only thing that is different is these 2 caps. im thinking the cap was marked wrong so im going to put in what the sams says. one of these caps go to 2 heavy resistors and a low uf cap just dont seem right these values are way off and again this all started after changing these caps and only diff is the 2 here. anyone ever run across something like a cap marked wrong like this? did this happen in old electronics of the 60s or earlier?

timmy 06-29-2011, 06:01 AM tried 2 3a3 and 3 6bk4 and a damper. i think this all has to do with the fact that the hv pot will not adjust the hv at all. i dont find anything stressed or burned and when i had it on, the flyback ran only warm not hot at all. its all ????? at this point.
DaveWM 06-29-2011, 09:25 AM did you ever check the voltage drop across the 1k resistor in the shunt tube cathode circuit. should be between .5v and 1.5v.
there is not much too the HV regulation, the pot, a 1.5meg to ground IIRC and a .01 HV disc cap. IF that voltage drop across that 1k resistor is too high then the HV regulation is clamping down to hard.
timmy 06-29-2011, 09:29 AM could it be a bad 6dq5 hot? since this one gives 24kv bright down but i tried another one and it gave 30kv and i think the bright was half down because there was arcing going on, 30kv is to much and ill have to try the hv pot again with the tube that is showing 30kv and see if it adjusts down at this point.
ctc17 06-29-2011, 11:18 AM Yes, use the strongest 6DQ5 with the strongest output then figure out why the regulator isnt holding the voltage down.
The test Dave and I are suggesting were simple standard diagnostic tests for tube color tvs. You are making things very hard and wasting lots of time by not doing these tests.
The voltage accross the 1kΩ resistor would have told us this like 3 days ago
timmy 06-29-2011, 11:57 AM where is this 1k resistor? if theother tube is putting that much more out then its possible that the pot will work as i dont think i tried it when i used that tube and the pot is at alittle over half the way up.
DaveWM 06-29-2011, 12:34 PM trace the shunt tube cathode, it goes to the 1k. You need to make sure its not drifted, should be a 5%. the 1k needs to be accurate to determine the current in the shunt, as its the voltage drop accross that. I generally just hookup a multimeter on both sides, take a resistance reading (before powering up the set) should be 1k, then switch to voltage and power up, you should see .5 to 1.5 depending on how the shunt in working (tapping off excessive voltage on dark scenes, the v drop will be the highest showing current flowing thru the 6bk4, bright scene the voltage drop will be much less, around 200-500mv. The idea here is to determine if the lack of HV is due to a the HOT/Fly or the shunt. if the shunt current is low in a dark scene then it mean the HOT/FLY is not puttting out enough HV to start with (so you check that there) if the shunt is clamping down hard even in bright scenes, then the HOT/FLY is prob ok and the shunt circuit needs attention.
You need to narrow down the problem, or you could get lucky and just keep replacing parts hoping to find the problem.
Obviously the 1st thing to check when you have HV issues is the big 4
HOT/HV rec/damper/shunt.
you can just sub those with know working tubes and if that fixes the problem start replacing one tube at a time with the orig. The problem with this approach is you may or may not have good tubes to sub with, SO you need to think the problem thru and apply what the test that have been described.
Besides all this you really should setup the HV that means the the the eff coil and the HV while checkng the HOT and Shunt currents (as has been described several times already), skipping this (just replacing tubes and adj the HV) can result in unnessary stress to a flyback that can result in damage of a part that can be VERY hard to find.
timmy 06-29-2011, 12:56 PM where is this 1k resistor, forgive but i know the basics and im sure you guys are doing this alot longer then i ever will,lol,lol. when i first got the set i could not get hv because someone put the jumper in to check milli amps but never took the jumper off until i found it and removed it so i assumed the current was set because the fly was replaced and it runs just warm not hot.

timmy 06-29-2011, 01:50 PM pin 1 is yellow and goes to a terminal block from there its soldered to a 1kv ciramic cap them goes to resistors for the hv pot but they are not 1 k the sams says its 1.5 meg, there are 2 of them.

timmy 06-29-2011, 02:37 PM yes there is but it talks about shorting certain terminals tuning in a picture then removing said shorted terminal and place a vtvm thru a hi vlotage probe to anode connector. them point H to ground, short across horiz ocill cathode coil pin 8 to ground plus more, boy this is out of my area, confusing there must be an easier way. but nothing about a 1k resistor.

bgadow 06-29-2011, 10:00 PM I had a set that would always start out with perfect focus, but over the course of about 10 minutes everything would turn into an unfocused blob. I wasted a lot of time in the focus circuit before subbing the H.O.Tube, which fixed it. That was on a Zenith.

dieseljeep 06-30-2011, 08:28 AM It sounds like the CRT is being over-driven. I also noticed all the references to this model, such as tube compliment, etc refer to a CTC12. not a CTC15. There's a considerable difference. Look around the blanker and color difference amp circuits as well.
timmy 06-30-2011, 09:48 AM i checked source voltages on the bench with no hot in and all seem good higher with no load but the 160v source starts out around 200v and drops down to 123v and stays, but should be much higher with no load.

timmy 06-30-2011, 08:27 PM well i was told by someone that repaired these sets in the 60s and he tells me that the crt has shorts on the cathode, the wire that goes to the focus coil and this coil is getting very hot and starts to smell then i have to shut down. so i checked for shorts in the crt and all 3 guns just keep sparking and they say once you get the sparks to stop then all should be ok but to heat up the focus coil like this can this happen? or is there somewhere else i can go to find out why this coil is this hot and why it cannot focus, crt only?????

timmy 07-01-2011, 10:54 AM well i guess i can call this an update it seems that the hv came up some after blasting the so called shorts in the crt and the sparks are just about gone and the focus coil was heating up because it was run in to far but that was a good position for focus in the beginning. so another 6dq5, and focus adjustment run out more,set up the color guns, agc, and now i have 18-22kv on the crt much better picture but the hv regulation still does not work because on scene changes the hv jumps from 18-22kv its not stable and cannot figure out why unless its the crt but i doubt it. tried 3-3a3, 3-6bk4, 2 6dw4, checked the adjust pot ohms as well as the 2- 1.5 meg resistors which were just above slightly but should be ok. there is only 4 wires green yellow and the heater and everything looks ok but i must be missing something again here.
ctc17 07-01-2011, 11:23 AM Were you using the rejuvenate/restore function on the crt tester to do this? If so, the reason the high voltage is higher now is because you seriously degraded your crt. You basically destroyed your crt by over rejuvenating it and there is less load on the high voltage because the crt emissions are much lower.
The 6DQ5 will cause your problem.

pull the cap off the 6BK4, hang it out of the way so it cant arc to anything. What does the HV measure with the cap off?
Let me explain it this way.... lets say your car has a regulator on it that will not let it go over 55mph....
Lets say there is something wrong with the engine and it doesnt have enough power to make the car go 45 mph, the regulator never kicks in because the car never reaches 55mph.
Now lets say the car will get up to 55mph on the flat (dim picture) and the regulator holds it at 55. No comes a steep hill (bright picture) and the motor does not have enough power to push the car faster than 35mph up the hill, the regulator never kicks in.
The high voltage system needs to have enough capacity to maintain the high voltage through all operating conditions. If it doesnt the regulator never comes into use. If something is overloading the high voltage like a gassy crt or you have the screens up to high.

timmy 07-01-2011, 03:28 PM hello again well i messed up and i cant get into it because its involved but i got the hv working by the pot now but only getting 14kv with the pot all the way up, the 2 1.5 meg resistors are 1.615 and the other is 1.600 do these resistors have to be exact 1.5meg or under.arethese values to high and this is why not getting higher kv? is it normal forthe 6bk4 to show alittle blue when the pot is turned down?

timmy 07-01-2011, 04:30 PM well i mad a dumb mistake from the start but i now corrected it and i cant type that well to explain but what i did made the hv pot not work at all and im glad i picked up on it because anything i was to test would have come back abnormal and i would have been all over this chassis looking for reasons that could have fixed them self had it not been for the stupid thing i did in the first place. im sorry for all the confusion i have caused everyone here.

timmy 07-02-2011, 06:41 AM well no its not fixed now the hv pot only raises up to 14kv and seems stable not jumping around but its to low.i will be pulling up the 6bk4 cap and see the hv then ill be pulling the 12by7a and see the hv and ill be lowering each color gun to see again if the voltage goes up to see if infact i did not get rid of the shorts that i found in the crt the one gun that is turned down that raises the hv to where it should be where may indicate a short condition in the crt, at least i think. after removing the shorts in the crt neck and i seen the little arcs i did get a much better picture but it may need more.i also double checked the 2 1.5 meg resistors and they are 1.600 and 1.617. something is clamping the voltage for sure but what i dont know and i hope its not the crt, the crt has very good emissions, good is 200 or more and it tests almost 400.

timmy 07-02-2011, 07:49 AM it did not indicate a short for what my tester shows for shorts but a friend that worked on these in the 60s tells me that a certain short i think he said cathode may not show on my tester. all it showed was very good emissions so i went ahead and used the remove shorts function ONLY and there were little sparks on each gun one a little more then another.

DaveWM 07-02-2011, 12:19 PM with everything hooked up, turn the brightness all the way down, read the HV at the anode of the CRT, and then read the focus voltage at the CRT. the focus voltage will be at the pin that is in between the other pins on the crt, (there are open spaces between it and the others). You can read this by tracing the black lead from the CRT Plug back to the fly and touching the HV probe there.
after doing this try it again with the shunt tube disconnected (the top plate cap removed, be careful the plate cap has full HV so make sure its not near a ground.
what are the voltages of the CRT HV anode and CRT focus with with the shunt tube connected and disconnected. brighteness all the way down.

timmy 07-02-2011, 06:17 PM ok, bright down black wire to focus is 2kv while the crt is 14kv with the hv pot still alittle over the half mark the way it was when i got it, it will adjust up to 18kv but thats max. hv moves around alittle on scenes. bright down focus wire just a spec over 2kv and crt just touches 30kv with 6bk4 cap off.
DaveWM 07-02-2011, 08:24 PM Next you need to determine if the CRT is drawing the current down or the shunt, I doubt its the CRT since the HV is low even with brightness all the way down.

unplug the CRT socket read the HV again with shunt cap on and then shunt cap off, HV adj to max
does the schematic show a jumper in the cathode circuit of the shunt tube (since you are positve there is no 1k resistor), but I am getting ahead of myself so just do the above test, CRT socket on and off, HV setting to the max.
I have an idea of something that could cause the shunt to conduct when in should not, but since I dont know if its the problem or not I dont want to mention it.
timmy 07-03-2011, 06:09 AM crt plug off 18 kv but adjusted up max, hvpot, and it will adjust down as well. cap off and crt plug off runs up to just touch 30kv.

this is a ctc15 and if it has the 1k i cant find it. sams says a short across horiz ocill cathode coil pin 8 to ground, .there is nothing saying of this resistor, and i feel really stupin at this point.
DaveWM 07-03-2011, 10:16 AM my CTC-15 documentation (not sams I have a RCA field service guide) show a 1k resistor, can you scan for send me what you are looking at (the sams), I only need to see the HV section if you can cut and paste that and attach it has a document.

look at the 6Bk4 tube counting clockwise (from the bottom) pin 1 is the 1st pin after the key, follow any wires coming from there and see where it goes. The 1 k in question does not have to be right at the tube, you need to follow the wire that connects to the pin 1 and see where it goes, tell me where that pin 1 is connected. If it goes to a term strip, what is on the term strip., can you take a pic of the bottom of the chassis?
timmy 07-03-2011, 12:09 PM pin 1 is yellow and goes to a terminal strip connected to 3 green wires and one side of a ciramic cap and one side of a long brown resistor. the 3 green wires i guess will follow to the 1k resistor.
DaveWM 07-03-2011, 01:12 PM well something is not right, there should be a jumper before the "long brown resistor, which I am guessing is a 13k screen resistor for the HOT. Any way if the HV pot is not open or shorted and the 1.5 meg resistors are ok, both of which I think you have checked, then the only other thing I can think of is a leaky .01 1kv cap between the grid and the cathode of that tube (pin 1 and 5). IF that cap is leaking then it would throw of the bias of the tube and could cause it to over conduct. NOTE you need to use a .01 1KV (not lower voltage disc) if you choose to replace it.
I cant say forsure this is the problem since you can seem to find a way to check the tube currents (either the 1k or a jumper in the cathode of the 6bk4).
if you can fix your scanner OR get a pic of the chassis around the 6bk4 (including the term strip) them I might be able to figure out how you are supposed to check the shunt current.
timmy 07-03-2011, 01:39 PM the yellow #1 wire comes off the tube and my sams says this is the jumper to check reg current so i think they mean open this area and place a meter in between, this is the mistake i made i opened this connection thinking otherwise so i since reconnected it and the pot now works but of course its not high enough,hv. that cap i replaced and the one that was there was what i put in, .0033 1kv disc.but i followed this yellow wire to caps tp the circuit board and no 1k along the way.

DaveWM 07-03-2011, 02:00 PM I am done, and yes you should open that up and check with a meter. the SAMS should detail this process and tell you what it should be.
I will let someone else take over as I cant think of anything else to add, it would have been nice to know about this a few days ago (the jumper and the sams telling how to check the regulator current).
and YES if there is a jumper then there will NOT BE a 1k resistor as its function is to provide a voltage drop so a voltage reading can be used instead of a current reading.
timmy 07-25-2011, 11:57 AM update to this hv issue, i read that if there is a problem in the focus divider in the flyback then the result is low hv at the anode so the test is check focus voltage with crt plug on and then with it off and if the focus voltage is low both on and off then its a fly problem. so i have low focus voltage both ways, on its about 2.5kv which should be 4-5 kv off its really LOW so i guess i can live with the low voltage because i have 18.5-20 kv on the anode and a very good and clear picture and cannot tell that its a few kv short of what it should be. what seem to make a very big difference was to run the shorts removal function on the crt tester, which there were sparks flying when being done but now seem to be gone. i just want to let everyone know here that i am thankful for all the help that everyone provided me, thanks again.
