View Full Version : What vintage TV will you watch Oprah's last episode on?

I'm really in a deep state of depression today, knowing that the last episode of Oprah will air this afternoon at 4 PM. I don't know how I would have survived all these years had she not been around for support and spiritual guidance. And, I'm afraid my life will be a total wreck, now that I'll no longer have her show to watch everyday.

This historic even is bigger than the DTV transition and I think I'll place every old TV that I own in rows and on top of each other so that I can watch this historic event on all of them at the same time.

LOL, you probably thought I was being serious! Actually, I couldn't give a flip about the Oprah show going off the air and I probably won't even tune in. The one thing I can say about her show is that her guest know how to behave, unlike Maury Povich or Jerry Springer. And, I wonder what they'll put in her place (probably more stupid crap). I've got a feeling it won't be re-runs of "Gunsmoke", "Kojak", or "The A-team".

Well I am totally in the dark. Had no idea her show was going off the air. As I get older I find it easy to ignore lots of stuff lol.

Well, you COULD pile a bunch of barely-working BPC TVs on top one one another, all tuned to Orca, & then drive a '75 or so model LTD or Caprice thru 'em & have a friend or 2 video the whole thing...Have ol' Orca go out w/a big, greasy BANG...Gee, I'm mean, ain't I ?!? (grin)

LOL @ Orca.

I couldn't give two shits about the show quite frankly. My mother is a huge fan though, which is how I know about it.

Reminds me of the time I saw an article about 35 years ago in some newsrag about a bar that sets up an old sacrificial TV set to be destroyed when Howard Cosell appears on Monday Night Football. A designated brick tosser aims a brick at the CRT when Howard is displayed... Probably a set we'd want to collect today. :sigh:

Actually, I stole my ideer from the Ant Farm-you know, the guys that created the "Cadillac Ranch" in Texas...They did the same thing in '76, 'cept they used a '59 Caddy coupe DeVille, & called it "The Media Burn". Their TVs were set afire, too, which was a nice touch...Mbwahahahahahaha...

I think there was a Wendy Williams and the Plasmatics video once where a schoolbus was driven through a giant wall of vintage sets.

I'm sure there was at least 10 X 17.2 squared metric gallons of tears bawled out on that last show...Wasn't that one of the things that Okra was famous for ?

Looked it up - "The Damned" is the song. Not my bag, but don'tcha know when they zoom into the wall of TVs I see a '64 Philco just like mine :) There's also an early-50's round CRT set in there.

I have actually read much criticism of her but not one thing that makes sense.
I think she is an angel from heaven and one of the most deserving people on the planet. I have said as much before here without anybody else adding to it I suppose because it came from me.
So, it is nice that a favored member here is giving credit where it is due :)

I watched on my Sony 27" to get a modern accurate picture. If I had a high-quality flat panel I would have used it. I usually just watch time period correct things on my special sets.

Oprah was just WAY Too Full Of Herself-as are 99.9% of the other chat-show types for me. The only one I can take-and then only in small doses-is Jerry's show, 'cause it makes no pretentions as to what it is-a Po' White Trash Extravaganza of making utter & complete raw fools of themselves on national TV.

Many people say Oprah is "full of herself". I would so very much appreciate any one of those people that would explain exactly how she should be in order to be what they think she should be. From all I can tell she has done an incredible level of good in educating many people throughout the world to be better in every imagineable way.
Are all of our mothers, wives and well-educated men and women from all walks of life wrong or somehow blind sighted in their belief that she is an incredible person in every way that deserves all she has and more?
It really blows my mind to realize how some people dislike her without any logical explanation or understandable reason.

Several years ago, I had to spend a couple of hours repairing monitors in a room that had a TV with the Jerry Springer show running on it. If I ever have anyone attempt to make me work in a location with that show on again, I will sue them for workplace abuse. Jerry Springer is disgusting.

I can honestly say i havent watched more than ten minutes of her show, ever. Those ten minutes are just accumulated time, the time it takes to change the channel.

So no, i didnt watch her last show.

Wait...

There's actually men on here who watches Oprah??

For shame :nono:

The correct answer to your question is: Yes, there are actually real men who watch her show, real educated men who love real women in fact.

I think it is fair to say Jerry's show helps to "dumb down" some people but I suppose it helps some to realize how they should not behave. He is obviously very smart to find a huge audience to make many millions. I guess it is true that no show is perfect for everybody.

My personal opinion I do have much respect for Oprah, especially for the fact she stays true to her word when she makes a promise!!! An Aussie lady name Megan who was a fan of Oprah met up with her in Hawaii and gave her her business card saying to Oprah if she comes to Australia to contact her and come over for dinner with her and her family. And during her Aussie tour she actually did attend to her dinner and embraced the Aussie way of life, this article tells the story in great detail http://www.neoskosmos.com/news/en/Tania-tacos-Oprah-%20Australia?page=show . Also I came across this article too of Oprah being down to earth and embracing the Aussie culture drinking a VB with the average Aussie blokes at a backyard barby http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/television/true-blue-oprah-keeps-it-real-with-backyard-barbecue-and-vb/story-e6frfmyi-1225969843923 . So to my opinion she is a real open person who would mingle with anybody and I think that's good, and I agree on the fact that her show's aim is to help people improve their lives for the better in every possible way and I think that's good!

I personally don't really watch her show religiously as I generally watch vintage TV stuff I find on my old videotapes or science/technology programs but have seen the odd few episodes and parts of episodes here and there and I think what she's doing is good. One show that did interest me was on Martin Luther King as I saw a nice high quality piece of QUAD B&W footage of his famous "I have a dream" speech back in 1963 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weEb9S6YyQs and I taped it, however I accidentally taped over it and have kicked myself for it hahaha lol, surprisingly I've only found kinescope footage of it on YouTube. I don't think I'll likely be watching her last show for the above reason but if my mum happens to watch it or if I see it on someone's TV and the subject matter is of interest to me I will watch it.

As for the Jerry Springer Show, it has entertainment value as in being good for a laugh but I can't help but think the people who go on there to have a whinge and cry over each other followed by a bitch fight instead of settling things peacefully are being totally pathetic and are not going to get very far in life slagging and beating each other, all they do is waste their own energies, personally I wouldn't even give those people the time of day while they are like that!!!

Right after I made my comment about Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics, I looked up the video of "The Damned" and I stand corrected. She doesn't run the bus through a wall of tv sets. She runs it through TWO walls of tv sets. I'll have to watch it again, as we had at least a 1964 Philco console, although most of those looked like table sets.

i have really no opinion of oprah.she is not a part of my life.glad she has some loyal fans, but dont need to worship her.the one i really dont like is maury povich.his show makes heros out of women who dont know who is their babys father.testing 10-15 men for paternity.when they are exonerated, then maury hugs the mother and assures her that they will help her find the father.she doesnt need help.she needs to abstain or use birth control.one women proudly proclaimed,"read the results and run me my money".results-you are not the father!19 different men tested,no father.he response,"i know who the father is.he s dead.i will get my child on social security".maury is a new low.jerry is a notch above him.maury knows better.

I'll give you my take on Maury Povich.

Most of his guest are either trailer park trash or housing project trash. If they wouldn't **** everything that comes along, they might know who their baby's daddy is. It's just a way for them to get on national TV and have their 15 minutes of fame because they sure wouldn't get it any other way. And, to think they removed RTV in order to replace it with shows like this and all those stupid damn courtroom shows. When I complained to the station owner, he personally agreed with me; but, said that RTV was not getting the positive ratings from viewers that the station had hoped for. So, they had to replace it with programming that would boost ratings. He added that the new programs had already received more positive reaction from viewers than RTV ever did. Oh well, it just goes to show what kind of people we have in society if they'd rather watch this kind of garbage over decent programming.

Regarding Oprah, even though I'm not a fan of her show, I still have respect for her. She came from nothing and made something of herself. The main reason for my first post was a reply to all those who think Oprah is God and if Oprah jumped off a mountain, some people would do the same just because Oprah did it. I can tell you that if someone held a gun to my head and gave the the choice to either watch Maury or Oprah, I'd watch Oprah.

Didn't the Maury show use to have different subjects instead of "who's your baby's daddy"?

You mean male feminists.

You are funny and I like that!

I mean real men who are not only legally married but real men who are legally married to real genuine women. I am sure that the main reason anybody does not appreciate Oprah is because they do not know or have time to learn the facts. I respect she is human like us all but I appreciate the way she conducts herself in general to set a good example for others to follow on top of doing alot to educate all sorts of people about all sorts of worthwhile things.

Maury's show seems to do less than what it should do for others. It is pretty sad for the kids that will see their parents on his show but maybe it helps people think to not behave that way.

How about Steve Wilkos? I think he does a good job as far as what can possibly be done to try to get through to the hardest heads around. Many people just don't respond to respectful truths and logic, so, maybe his approach is all that can maybe help some hard heads. However, I suspect on occassion an innocent may be falsely accused and have his life ruined on that type of show.

Yes, I remember Sally. I also remember Phil Donahue, along with Montel Williams. I can't say that I'm saddened to see any of them gone.

I also remember when Scooby Doo (the late '60's "good" version) and He-Man came on in the afternoon, after school. That would have been in the '83-'85 time period. Then, all the talk shows started taking over and that's pretty much all there is now.

I will admit that as a kid, I liked to watch the first generation of "Divorce Court" that had the older man for a judge. Back then, I thought it was pretty funny. As an adult, I probably wouldn't think it was so funny.

I think the reason many here don't like such shows is that most of the more popular personality's here clearly grew up in situations of good neighborhoods and or with good parents and relatives who instilled proper good values for them to be generally very good people who were essentially isolated from most of the ugliest situations that large majority's have suffered through that naturally makes it hard for them to be such "good" people who are so above the low-level sorts seen on these shows.
So, it is no surprise that the fortunate majority here sees little to no value in these shows. All respected research indicates these shows, crazy as they may seem, do much more good than harm in educating peope about problems and presenting possible solutions.
I like Dr. Phil too

Most of the "guests" on the Jerry springer show provide an illustration of how NOT to behave. I watch it sometimes for a laugh, but not often. History channel is a favorite, and TCM.

I predict that within the next five years at the most we will have some shows much like Mike Douglas, Dinah, etc. I saw a Dinah youtube clip with Andy Kaufman that is very funny in seeing the audience confused and Dinah trying to work with Kaufman's skit.

I live in a town that is within a county that Oprah did a "special" on, about heroine use. Apparently, according to her stellar research team, there are a lot of meth and heroine users around here...

You know what though? I love this town. It is so quiet, there is next-to-no crime, and the people are great. But what ticks me off, is every time I mention my town to somebody, they are like "I heard there is a big drug problem over there"... ARRG!

Thanks Oprah.

1) I believe you have it backwards... If the majority of people in this country were similar to the trash on these exploitative TV shows, we would have collapsed into anarchy years ago. That isn't to say we aren't trending towards a reversal of what is considered "normal".

2) I would love to see the respected research that indicates these types of shows (I'm not really including Oprah) do more good than harm to society. At one time, simply having an affair was talk-show fodder. Within about two decades, the shows have degenerated into near-daily discussions of incest, molestation, mental/physical abuse, and they worst types of depravity you can imagine. If anything, it normalizes and removes the stigma from this behavior until you have people rationalizing the lesser evils, because "they at least don't do XYZ". Televising this soul-crushing garbage cannot possibly improve society's mental health.
