View Full Version : NOS RCA picture tube on CL airgrabber-6 03-09-2011, 11:50 AM New in box...starting "bid" only $1500. http://southjersey.craigslist.org/atq/2235416487.html Kevin Kuehn 03-09-2011, 12:25 PM That's wild. And no mention of the type number. Kevin kvflyer 03-09-2011, 01:10 PM That's wild. And no mention of the type number. Kevin My thought too. Somehow, I think this seller will be disappointed at the lack of (non-sarcastic ;)) replies to the post! bandersen 03-09-2011, 01:15 PM It's also an engineering sample so could be something weird. I believe the way their selling it (taking bids) violates the craigslist rules. Electronic M 03-09-2011, 02:27 PM If it is a developmental color tube(or a 15GP22) it may be worth that to someone. Otherwise they maybe lucky to get 1/10 the price. It is amazing what some(crazy?) people think some mass produced and easliy obtainable items they've never seen before are worth. Tom C. compu_85 03-09-2011, 02:30 PM For that much I would at least want a picture of what's in the box  wa2ise 03-09-2011, 03:01 PM For that much ... I'd want to see it presenting a nice picture on its screen, in a fully restored vintage TV set. Like a CT100 (if it's the one that goes with that set) :D ChrisW6ATV 03-09-2011, 05:15 PM The price is reasonable for a 15GP22, yes. kvflyer 03-09-2011, 06:39 PM Come on, a 15GP22? I doubt it. And if it is, what are the chances that it still holds vacuum??? "Good Luck, Seller..." Geoff Bourquin 03-09-2011, 10:54 PM The word "Aluminized" is on the box....wouldn't that imply a B&W tube? Sorta kills any hope if a 15GP22-like tube if I'm right Ampico-kid 03-09-2011, 11:48 PM The word "Aluminized" is on the box....wouldn't that imply a B&W tube? Sorta kills any hope if a 15GP22-like tube if I'm right Yes...you're right. I can just about make it out to the lower right of the RCA logo. Not clear, but definitely looks like it says "Aluminized". airgrabber-6 03-10-2011, 09:02 AM I am reasonably close by if I can help in any way with this transaction. ;) AUdubon5425 03-10-2011, 09:16 AM Think about it...every single model of CRT that RCA ever made must have had several engineering samples issued. The seller is just an idiot who thinks it's the first picture tube ever made. I swear, even around here all kinds of vintage stuff is popping out of the woodwork on CL, with ridiculous prices. I think people are getting desperate... stusnyder 03-10-2011, 09:58 AM I am reasonably close by if I can help in any way with this transaction. ;) Not for that price.... kramden66 03-10-2011, 10:40 AM i emailed him to see if he could give me the number :) mike airgrabber-6 03-10-2011, 10:44 AM Not for that price.... You're right. Bidding only starts at $1500...probably will go for much, much more.:lmao: Kevin Kuehn 03-10-2011, 04:47 PM i emailed him to see if he could give me the number :) mike Me too, last night. No response yet. Possibly he was offended by my bidding on a wild card remark. :D Kevin Findm-Keepm 03-10-2011, 07:44 PM Gotta watch those engineering samples. They are often shipped to manufacturers for mechanical purposes, not electrical, and may not be 100% functional. I've got GE 13" and 19" Engineering-sample CRTs for their PC-chassis sets. Big ugly purple label on them proclaiming "Engineering Sample - Not UL tested" and wouldn't you know it, a centered 2" plus sign, burned in the Phosphor. The tubes are NEC-made, and were obviously not for production. Good tubes electrically - just unuseable for any display purpose. Reminds me of the RCA ceramic DIP IC engineering samples I got from a retired avionics engineer - lotsa gold, but no innards. Just a sample of the package, along with engineering drawings and the proposed EIA/JEDEC package drawing. I've got a 1967 Radio Electronics magazine with them in there - old RCA meatball on the ones in the magazine, but mine all have the newer, stylized RCA logo. You see them pop up on fleabay occasionally, usually embedded in acrylic. Cheers, kramden66 03-11-2011, 02:05 PM Here is a copy of the reply Mike Developmental Type C73859. Test # 9. RCA 17-110. Neck length 4-3/16. Silverama Engineering Sample Cathode Ray Tube. Date shipped: 07/09/1958. This tube is in 100% brand new in the box condition. John Folsom 03-11-2011, 02:18 PM I got the same response from the seller as Mike did. Sounds like some ordinary B&W tube ....? Kevin Kuehn 03-11-2011, 02:54 PM I got the same email as well. I doubt it's anything exciting. He should open the box and peek inside. :D Kevin Kevin Kuehn 03-11-2011, 02:59 PM Looking at those numbers from the email...I'll bet it's a 17" 110 degree something. :) Kevin Eric H 03-11-2011, 06:18 PM Possibly an engineering sample of a short necked Predicta Tube? Did Philco engineer their own tubes at that time or did they sub contract that type of work? Findm-Keepm 03-11-2011, 06:25 PM 17" 110 degree tubes: 17DAP4 17DQP4 17DRP4 Possibly one of these? Cheers, Don Lindsly 03-11-2011, 07:41 PM Possibly an engineering sample of a short necked Predicta Tube? Did Philco engineer their own tubes at that time or did they sub contract that type of work? Eric: Philco OEM CRTs were manufactured in Lansdale and sent to Philadelphia TV assembly in specially built freight cars with internal conveyors. When the freight car arrived at the TV plant, the conveyor was connected directly to the assembly plant conveyor where they were picked and installed in the TVs. By that time TV assembly had consolidated on to the first floor. Engineering was done in Lansdale and Philadelphia. R & D was done internally as well as outside. Manufacturing Engineering figured out how to make a lot of stuff fast, inexpensively and get it shipped. bgadow 03-11-2011, 10:49 PM Don, you really need to write a book-seriously! I really enjoy information like that. |
