Because this creates to many jobs and we try and do our best at eliminating jobs as the population grows

watching all those folks doing so much by hand makes me cringe at the idea of people just tossing the old sets in the landfill (even more than it did already). What craftsmenship.

I bet it was almost fully automated by the time they got into the bonded yokes and perfect convergence crts. Think of how many people it took to make a set and all the parts in it. From every tube to every capacitor in every supply factory even down to the miners who pull the raw materials out of the ground. 10,000s of people and all that production was here in the US.

Its so dizzying to think about, time to smoke a joint and check the mail for my unemployment check.

I remember watching this many times in my teens. In black and white! It was shown on BBC2 as one of the "Trade test" films. These were shown during the day out of normal broadcasting hours so that retailers had something in colour to show to customers apart from the test card. The UK colour service started in 1967, first in Europe but a long time after the US.

It may seem quaint in these days of 24 hour broadcasting that in the UK, daytime broadcasting is a fairly recent innovation.

Even with the relatively limited automation shown in that film, it's an excellent demonstration of why colour CRTs have to be made in large volumes if they're going to made at any reasonable price.

is it me, or the green on that film kinda "yellow"
