Just picked up this set off craigslist. The cabinet is extra nice in fact near perfect condition. The chassis fired up on a variac and I heard sound and horizontal and high voltage.Couldn't tell if the vertical was working.

Now comes the problem. The crt is not broken but the base is completely gone. There seem to be wires for each of the elements in the tube so that's good. There is some darkening in the glass around the base.Bad sign? Sure hope the crt is good.I'll do some filament tests tomorrow to see if that's at least good and the tube is in fact under vacuum. The crt is a 21ALP4B/21ALP4A. Anyone got a junk base they can send me to fit this tube?

I don't think the legs are original. What do you guys know about this set?
Anyone got a sams also?

Nice lookin' set. Looks like just the plastic cap fell off. Shouldn't make any difference on vacuum. Either it had it or didn't before or after the cap got lost. Have to be careful not to bend the wires and hook everything up right until you find another one.

Very nice looking Admiral Super Cascode. The gold trim on those old Admiral sets really stand out and add to their beauty. Don't ever remember seeing any literature or wooden console sets with those legs, though those iron legs were used on many 50's sets.
Is that cabinet in a walnut finish or mahagony?

Here is a Super Cascode I picked up a year or so ago - it does work but with a short raster. Maybe I'll find time after the new year to have a look at getting mine fully operational.

JC, I have the sams, I'll mail it to you. I'll also look and see about a socket. Might be able to fashion one from an old brightener?

It apears to be mahogany. Was certainly much cheaper than the Sylvania in the other thread and much better looking.BTW he reduced that one to $149 and someone bought it.doubt they were on VK though as it was poo pooed here. This one was $50.Was it worth it?

I guess the condition of the crt will determine whether it was worth it to me.

Yeah $ 50 is not bad for that set given that the cabinet is in good or better condition - I think I gave $ 40 for that wheat color set I have - and it is/was dirty as hell. As Bryan suggests an old brightener will probably work for an end cap. Even if the crt is bad, I don't believe that is an oddball jug - should be relatively easy to find a replacement if needed.

Connected the wires. It's ugly for now but it worked.Whew took a lot of scraping to get continuity and solder to stick to the wires.Suspect it's been a long time since that base has been on there. Well I got a picture. The jug seems to be weak though. Got a dim picture with that silvery look around the faces.

Couldn't leave it on long though. The raster starts pulling in after about 5 minutes and you hear a distinct hum in the audio and the HO tube starts glowing red.:yikes: Think it's a drive issue(leaky caps?) versus a flyback. The flyback is cool to the touch after this and no sign of it ever being hot.

Maybe I can come up with 2 bases.1 for my B&K 467 so I can see if this tube will come up some on emission.Or else I might need a crt after all. I might let it cook a while with the rectifier out and give it 1 more quick power up to see if the tube woke up before pulling the chassis for recapping and repair when I get out of bed. It's 3:00 in the morning here. Going to bed now.
No I'm not leaving any power going in this thing while I'm sleeping.:nono:
