I picked up this Zenith A600 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250698264689) on eBay.

After doing a recap and electrical restoration what do people usually do about the case? The covering is pretty beaten up as you can see. Should I recover it or try to touch it up?

Recovering looks like a ton of work:

But it sure does look nice!

I did one just like this for a buddy of mine a few years ago. I recapped it and cleaned the contacts etc, but the case was in excellent condition and only needed a few little nicks touched up with a black sharpie and then black paste shoe polish all over. On one a little worse you could use black shoe dye. But in your case, John, I think you'd need to recover it. These are really nice radios once they are redone. I'd say you got a good deal on it.

BTW the line cord needs a side entry plug rather than the common rubber one somebody stuck on there in the photo series.

Thanks for the info on the line cord. The 1L6 tests like new so that alone probably makes it worth the price. Guess I shoud find a 1R5 to test out the set once I restore it?

I think it is a side entry plug. The cord enters the plug from the side. The prongs are perpendicular to the cord.

Good. Yeah, I was referring to the one shown in the 50+ picture series. I had to scrounge around and come up with a black side entry plug in my case. I guess if somebody had to, one of those no-strip white ones where the cord goes in the side and there's a quick lever closure on top would work, but those don't look very professional for something like this.

I have one of these but its a B600. A friend of mine has one similar with a badly worn case. He actually stripped the cloth fabric or whatever it is down to the wood, and varnished the wood. Not that I would do that, but it looked very nice when it was all done.
