Ok, i feel i need to start my own thread on this instead of killing someone elses over it. hehe.

Anyway... this TV, TV series is starting to royally annoy me.

I have one of these which is the PDP50X3 series.

Blown Y-sustain board. Replaced the YPPD-J015B, and rebuilt the YPPD-J016B with new outputs tied into the old hybrid IC.

That worked ok with pixled on bright scenes and the rebuilt 016B would get hot to touch after a couple of minutes.

So i just bit the bullet and got a new 016B. so basically the 015B and 016B are new parts about 40 bucks a peice.

Well, it seriously improved the maldischarge situation 10-fold. it was still present a little bit. but it was mostly gone.

Ran it for a couple minutes and felt the heatsinks. they were warm but not hot. then a few minutes later. POWWWW. seen a bright flash and screen went black.

Well waddya know, the J015B blew out again. the new one. WTF... too expensive to keep blowing.

The 18V VCC supply that i guess is used to drive the gates of the switching mosfets inside the IPM is only 16.3V. even with both ICs removed. testing all the capacitors for ESR, capacitance, and leakage reveal them all being fine. What gives? is the 16.3v explain the very quick failure of the IPM again.?

the J016B ER IPM survived the explosion. still good.

My set has been running at 16.1v for a while now. I noticed the upper module the ER module running hot. I dont know what to do about the ER module heat. I have checked every component on the YSUS boasrd (even the small SMD) and everything is well in spec. Is it that this board will only allow no nore than 16.5vdc for the 18v? I just stuck fans on the heat syncs. Ghetto but proved to work! I have read that these IPMS are like tires. One goes bad the others are not far behind. The excessive heat on the ER module might be that it's just getting tired.

Both of my IPMs were new. then the SUS IPM decided to blow 5 minutes later.

I needed to know what ER module are for because this is unusual name.

Wish I had more info on that but I dont. And I dont know the concept behind the ER module but I do know every Plasma set has one on the Y and the Z or X sustain board. I do know however that if an ER module goes bad, the gas in the plasma panel does not get energized. (had a module that caused the display to flash like a strobe)

Ahh, this ER module is a DC-DC converter since these are small upright boards with small transformer on each board and capacitors, circuitry for voltage feedback and driving the transistor through the small transformer?

Used to have 3 of those on YSUS board now down to one integrated into YSUS board on very recent samsung panel (less than 2 years old).

I know on the 50X3 the ER is coupled into the same output as the SUS module. then the outputs from those 2 modules combined, go into a MOSFET bank.

I havent the slightest idea how that board works, but i understand the concept. thats about it.

And what I understood is the panel is addressed like memory with all the information and pixel data written into the panel first.

then the sustain pulse comes that discharges the gas in all the addressed electrodes. then the erase pulse comes and clears the entire address plane. and the process starts over again.

Which would address issues with maldischarge. When the ER module cannot erase the info and discharge cells, you get the red and blue smear frame issue. Well said.
