Hey all! Last night I got to recapping the set finally.

And the horiz sync issues I was having are gone. I shotgunned the power supply and half of the sync board. However the horiz width is still a bit stretched and there seems to be a bit of a 60hz hum bar. Im thinking I missed something. Jerome sent me a list of caps I ordered and I have a bit left for some reason but I looked all throught the set and only found one can style on the top board. Am I missing something?

On the other note, the CRT looks really good. I scoped the 77v and looks good.

I hooked it up to my Nintendo wii to just see the picture. Looks excellent. I actually gave it a little bit of run time and played a little Guitar Hero 5 on it. lol.

That's great news! I have the feeling that yours may be the only 100% working one in the USA at this point... I think Jerome H has one in France, if I recall his posting on it... I'd sure like to see that set in person some day!

Yeah Jerome has one as well and his just recieved the "shotgun" recap as well. I have not seen pics of his set in operation after the recap.

I will post some pics up on the site tonight of my set in operation! It looks to be a success!

Well here are the pics of the KV-7010UA pics now after the recapping. I took these pics on my iphone so they kind of suck and do not do the tv any justice, the tv look excellent. But you can get the idea, and see the hum bars.

Yes the bars were there before the recapping as well.
I slipped the can over the caps in the top board after i gutted it.

No you're not, i scanned all the board for caps having an HV rating (100V, 150V,350V) to have them handy for the recap. Indeed, the can cap only contains 470MFD/330MFd/220MFd all rated at 100V.

In the meantime, mine has become ...a monitor! - by accident. It works fine in baseband video with the handheld B&K feeding the Video Out test point on the SD board (imput to the color decoder), but OTA reception: none. The 12V line feeding the tuner is present. I had to change R221 (33 Ohms/1W) which had seriously drifted upwards in value and was under-voltaging the IF DC supply.

I will try the other B&K with Ch3 out at the antenna in, and Scope the signal through the IF chain.

I've added quick scans of the schematics for those interested.

Will post pictures later today.

Charles: does your manual have a section on convergence, alignment & setup? mine obtained via E-type2 (Thanks!) has nothing on these topics.

Hello again,

Well i fixed the reception/tuner/IF issue: part of a PCB trace, 1 or 2mm came off when rocking a cap to remove it. The TV now works beautifully, video and RF.

Here are some pictures, this TV is full to the brim and weighs a ton!

That's it for now, i must reinstall the shields then change the caps in the decoder board.

That set looks excellent! and congratulations on fixing the broken PBC trace to the IF stage. Convergence alignment is quite interesting in this set. I have tried to get it close and it is almost spot on.
I need to connect my B&K now and see how this set look and take some pics with a real camera and repost.

Coming back to the service manual, i would be curious to know if yours is more complete than ours, which may be a very early publication: no parts list, no alignment procedure, no CRT replacement instructions, no convergence & white balance procedure. Could you please have a look, if easy to locate, Thanks! in advance.

A last comment:
in this TV, only the 75V DC supply uses a conventional series-regulated ballast, all other voltages are derived from the fHOT/lyback system.

You can feel that Sony was testing the concept of alternate, more efficient power supply systems which would later come into full bloom in the KV-5000/5100 Series with the "switch-mode PSU from Hell"!
Miss ONE component in that one, and it's stone-dead or Kaboom!

I'll check that manual... I think mine is complete (as far as not having any torn or missing pages, but I don't know if Sony had started that bullcrap of publishing a separate manual for setup adjustments, as they did in the 80s and up. I'm not going to be where that manual is until the last week of August, but I will make a not to check :thmbsp:

I managed to do some final adjustments on the set before I screwed the cover back on. I performed my own chroma and burst alignment with the adjustments the set offered. the reason for this is I tried a few OTA UHF channels and noticed with weak reception, the hue would drift with reception strength. I scoped a few areas on the board and found that it looks as if the burst and bandpass sections were off. I made adjustments and brought it in perfect. I still find it wild that this set has two color crystals.

Here is one more pic of some UHF OTA channel that comes in faily strong during the day and weakens a bit at night.
