Sometime in the very early '70's, my parents bought a camper and this little leather cased 9" GE portable AC/DC B&W TV was part of the deal. It would either run on AC or a NiCd battery pack that was housed in a compartment on the bottom of the TV. I think it also had a DC car cord; but, I think it had vanished by the time I came along. Around '83, this set went in my bedroom and stayed there for years. Sometime in the late '80's, my Dad tried to get a new battery pack, to which he was told that it was NLA. So, he cut off the battery pigtail plug and wired a 12V car cord to the plug. At first, he wired the cord backwards and ended up killing the TV, which required a trip to the repair shop to replace a diode and fuse. To my knowledge, that's the only trouble that TV ever gave during it's life. It was always a good performer and it had a "hot" tuner. We finally got rid of it in the mid '90's when the CRT started going weak from all those years of "instant on". According to the Sam's Photofact, the model number is TR115RTX-2 and the chassis number is R-2. I've seen a lot of portable GE B&W TV's over the years; but, have never seen another set like the one we had. One day, maybe I'll get lucky and find another model.

Another portable AC/DC GE that I've only seen one of was a mid to late '60's 12" AC/DC solid state portable. The cabinet and knob layout was similar to the standard 12" tube type "S" chassis AC only sets, with the control knobs below the screen. The only tube in the solid state AC/DC version was the HV rectifier. Someone gave me one of these sets, close to 20 years ago, and it had the typical vertical problems that GE's of that era gave and I never did fix it. I don't have a picture of that one.

IMHO, the newer 9" set was far better. In fact, that 9" set might not have been an actual GE built TV, as I think it was made in Japan.
