Someone contacted me and said he has a complete TV shop for sale.
Opened in the early 50's and closed 7 years ago.

He wants to sell of the parts and equipment, if anyone's seriously interested and is nearby contact me and I'll give you the contact info.

He's in the 412 Area Code.

Why the heck can't this happen near me?? :) Well, actually it did once and I missed the estate sale for it. Didn't see the ad until it was too late, I bet there was some cool stuff judging by what the ad said.

Back in the old days, before cellfones & every ditchwater having/needing its own area code, 412 was Pittsburgh, IIRC.

The 90s was a transitional time for a lot of things. In the middle of the decade suddenly new area codes looked like exchange prefixes and the new exchange prefixes looked like area codes.

OT musing: During my youth, in my town, where the exchange was 392/396/399 we could simply leave off the first "3" and dial the last six digits when calling within the area. If calling the 335 exchange, we could leave off the first two digits, only dialing the last five. Oddly, the 394 exchange could likewise be accessed by merely dialing "4" and the last four digits. That all became a thing of the past when new touch-tone equipment was implemented in 1982.

Yeah, I sorta had a lot of the area codes memorised-404 was Atlanta, 804, Richmond, 312, Chicago, 212, New York, now thats not really possible anymore.

My sister in NY still has 212, but, first three didgets are 316.

The old rule was was that the middle digit of an area code was always 0 or 1,
and the middle digit of an exchange was never 0 or 1. Now area codes don't
really exist anymore and we all have 10-digit phone numbers, at least where
I live.

As recent as the late '80's, in a small town near here where my Dad grew up, one could still dial 5 numbers in order to call someone in town. To call long distance within the state only required one to dial 1 + the seven digit phone number. Then, it was required to dial the full seven numbers for local calls and 1+area code+number for any long distance calls. About 8 years ago, it became necessary to dial the area code + seven digit phone number for local calling. 601 used to be the area code for MS. Now, we have 601, 662, and others.

I was talking to a lady who lived in York, AL during the '60's and early '70's and she said they still used the old system where one picked up the receiver and the operator said "number please"

"wun, too, thuh-ree, foh-wer, fah-yuv, six, seven, eight, niner" - how my late aunt, the phone operator, was taught to pronounce the numbers for maximum accuracy.

Meanwhile, at my family's country place, we still have officially a party line
subscription, although there is a ringer isolator so we don't hear any other
ring code than our own, but we do have to dial 10 digits on that rotary dial
to make local calls!

And you didn't have to dial a 1 in front of an area code, as the system could figure that out from the 2nd digit being a 0 or 1.

Around here any exchange beginning with a 6 was assigned to an outlying area. Until the early 90's, every phone number outside metro New Orleans but within a 30 or so mile radius began with 6. It originally had to do with switching through step-by-step offices.

Meanwhile, the guy in PA is throwing those NOS 21FJP22's in the dumpster 'cause nobody has responded...
