I've found what I'm pretty sure is an RCA CTC-39 from '72-'73 in my area. I was wondering what y'all think of that set. I really don't have a need for it, but want to know if it's something special worth the effort of rescuing.

I have a '38 in my garage- if it hadn't come as part of a deal for many other sets, I'd have passed it by. Does have a nice cab, tho.

Those sets can give a good picture when set up properly. They also had a fairly hot tuner if you plan on analog DXing.
How is the CRT?

If you're looking to offload those sets, there is a guy I know in milwaukee who would probably buy them from you.

As to the topic of the thread, the CTC-39 is a good chassis. I can't complain about them. I'd go after it.

I think the CTC39 was similar to the CTC38, with some revisions. My aunt had a CTC39 console from the early '70's that was used up until around '87, when the repairman told her that it would cost more to fix than it was worth. And, I had a 23" RCA commercial grade "mural TV" in a steel cabinet that had various jacks on the back for connecting other equipment. Also, my elementary school still had some of these sets at least through the late '80's and there was one at my highschool as late as '95. From what I can remember, they all had nice pictures.

Parts and a learning tool if nothing else. Go for it

Lots of nice bright overexposed shiny objects that burn a dark spot right in the center of the crt.

I was always under the impression that the CTC-39 was a s good as an RCA tube chassis could get. Most of the flaws and quircks were eliminated and the AGC was top notch. I miss my old CTC-39. I was 14 when my dad and I drug that beast across the street into my bedroom and started to pull tubes when it had a sound, no HV condition. This was the project that my dad and I did together and it's what I think about when I work on a tube set. (male bonding) which my dad and I never got too much a chance to do. Guess the CTC-39 is what got my interested in this type of hobby. I was foolish when I was younger and when the 39 crapped out (what now I believe was a color crystal) I threw it out. I would love to have that set back.

Go get that set! It had a marvelous picture and I loved staying up late playing nintendo on mine.

They weren't horrid, nor were they top of the line.
It WAS the last tube chassis on an RCA console, so for that reason it would be a nice save.
Just make sure the flyback is good. Moyers hasn't had them for years due to the fact that 38/39's loved to eat up the flys. Also have some 6GH8's on hand... LOL!

I don't know Doug, if you're talking about Tom, he's downsizing like crazy because like me, has some monetary issues. I don't have much room or money right now either but would be interested in the right sets if they came along. I just picked up two roundies from Tom about a week ago. Philco and a Muntz, and also a SC 400 Zenith rectangular that I think was once yours. I couldn't pass those up:D

Know of any good CTC-40 cabinets down there/ :scratch2: I have a CTC-40, works great and good emmission on the orig CRT. Just used to be in a combo and now it's just a set with hacked off sides :no:

Probably gonna hang onto the RCA B&W metal set, it's too cute on it's little metal wheeled stand! :yes: I'd love to keep the remote sets, but the reality is that space is at an extreme premium in my apartment and I just picked up a CTC-9.

??? Is that really a CTC-39?? I thought the 39 used a 90deg 23" CRT, everythink else looks like a 39. Am I thinking about a CTC-38?

I think some late CTC39's used a 25V tube.

Well, browsing ads and catalogs I noticed that RCA didn't use the same cabinets across different chassis. I did some hunting and found an ad from 1972 (I think) displaying that exact cabinet and control layout (no power bar, one button above the two pots in the door) - crossed the model number in the ad (GR670) through the Sams index and came up with the CTC39 chassis.

Wow I learn something new every day I guess. So I did have the early CTC-39.

Yep, a Muntz color set from 1965....be patient, I'll start a thread about it:) I have a LOT of cabinet repair to do on it so it'll be interesting.

The 25V" set in the cabinet/control panel design shown here is used for the CTC-39 illustration in the RCA field service guide. The CTC-39 I have is in a metal table top cabinet with a 23V" tube and looks like a late model CTC-38.

Are you sure the set shown in this ad isn't a solid state model? I have a set which looks exactly like this at home which is an XL-100 solid state (CTC-46 or 48?) which I think is from 1973.
The tube type CTC-39 set will say "AccuColor" above the volume/brightness controls but it looks like the text on this one is longer than "AccuColor" and may be "XL-100 Solid State"

My grandmother bought a CTC39X new around 1975, possibly a clearance sale item (store making room for SS models). She also got the service contract, found the paperwork (they replaced a pilot light). She watched soap operas and regular prime time OTA on it a lot. My father (grandma was his mother in law, and they had the standard issue relationship ;) ) and I replaced tubes, the horizontal output and damper IIRC. We ended up with it in the mid 80s. The VHF tuner didn't work, but UHF did work. Probably a dead VHF local oscillator tube. MY brother tossed it...

Actually, Moyers just had a 119834 up on eBay - and some lucky individual outbid me. My '39 fly is still good, with 190-200mA current, and fused, but I' was hoping for a spare. Fly 308's and Fly 312's show up on eBay occasionally, and some were offered in ETF classifieds last year, so I've not given up entirely.
