my B&W maggie console, daily driver.

pulled tuner out, popped out a few of the unused channes strips, cleaned the stationary fingers (super slick cleaner, no silcone etc... used on pots and other stuff) by wiping them with a paper towel damped with super slick. cleaned up very nice. did the same to the buttons on the turret. used the big eraser to shine them up some more. did NOT drench any thing, but maybe a spritz got some were.

anyway put it all back together. Perfect no snow, do not have to find the sweet spot (it was a real pita before), BUT now ever few seconds the pic will jiter, like a lost of sync (both vert and horz). this was not a problem at all before the cleaning so I am assuming its related. I did replace the sync tubes any way, no help.

I checked to make sure the AGC voltage was still at the tuner in case I distrubed the wiring, I even clamped the AGC at the tuner with a variable DC supply, no effect (I could dial in snow with increased agc and it would still shake).

I tried letting in bake by playing for a few hours, I will try that some more and see. My only guess is the spritz got on some vari cap inside the tuner and is causing problem. I will get the B&K 1076 out next and try feeding a IF signal after the tuner to see if I can isolate this to the tuner itself.

Sounds like you got everything under control and on it's way back to normal. How about taking the suspicious areas or parts you think got your magic cleaner stuff on and douching them with greased lightning or equivelant strong degreaser, then washing with clean water then let sit in sun or oven at 100 degrees for long enough to dry? A mentor of mine, Ed Callahan of Ed's TV in St. Petersburg, Fla would sometimes get a chassis with heavy cig smoke and or roach poop like a 19" Motorola Quasar from like '73 that had such gunk in it and many roaches. He sprayed it all with degreaser, hosed it down and let the sun dry it. It lasted many years after that. He would not normally get involved in things so disgusting but the owner bought the set from him new as he was a Quasar dealer and he cared about the interests of his friends even though they were clearly nuts. This set 's owners owned much property and were quite wealthy yet extremely cheap til the bitter end when thier estranged daughter inherited it all. Seems like that behavior happens alot. So, anyway, that TV sat in the back room of thier pharmacy of thier little nighborhood store on a high shelf. The store was at the corner of 58th St and I think 46th Ave in Kenneth City which is in St Pete. Just checked google map. It's on 54th Ave and now called el toro negro(not surprised)The Minella's would sit in that shop all day watchin that set til they died. It had been opened in the early "50's and lasted into the '80's when the daughter sold it for a huge bundle. Now it is has that funny smell ethnic stores here in Fla often have like they dont change the mop bucket water. Ooops, am I rambing again? I need some meds :)

anyhow I putzed with it started tapping wiggling wires etc.. and was able to get a prolonged futz, which is great since now I have something wrong that is not intermittant.

99% sure it was the osc tube, tapping it would send it off crazy. I pulled it and reseated, did not do an extened test but I think that was it.

I must have distrubed it just enough pulling the tuner (its in a console installed in a hard to get location.

I will pull again and do a proper cleaning of the pins and socked (the tuner is out now).

I guess this is a testiment to not doing a complete resto unless the set is a basket case. By just doing one thing at a time and seeing the results makes trouble shooting (at least for the novice) a lot easier.

oh yea and this tuner has the B+ for the tuner out there on a big ole term strip (I guess its to make the uhf tuner easy to hook up, this on has none), so needless to say you dont want to go tapping back around there with the tuner installed, yes I did get bit while checking the osc tube to make sure the shield was up with the set on. Digging back in the recesses of that set is like sticking your hand in holes in a coral reef or noodling for catfish...

When u have a set or contacts of any kind that are not coated with magic cleaners or other remedy goos I believe u cannot do beter than using the Deoxit cleaners when carefully applied one does not have to chance scratching the originally polished surfaces as the Deoxit stuff chemically restores the surface makig the result last as long as possible. I am sure the chemicals in Deoxit could be found elsewhere but I have not tried to figure it out. Like it must be some mild acid I suppose. They also have protectants that also could be found elsewhere. I think of alternatives since the Deoxit stuff is pretty darn expensive for most budgets but definately worth it unless u know alternatives that do the same without scratching or altering frequencies, etc. I expect alternatives are written about throughout this site but it is almost impossible for me to read as much as I want to. I have ADD amoungst other "harmless to others" issues.

more oddness...

ok cleaned up up socket and pins, still problems, recheck AGC -2.1 vdc

then I changed the channel, all of a sudden much sharper pic and stable, yet AGC is at -.8vdc.

I guess I was on the wrong channel the whole time, yet the fine tuning must have been close enough (hmmm I dont use the audio from the tuner, I bet that would have told me something).

anyway very sharp pic now with much better contrast and so far no shakes so will have to keep monitoring it and see whats up. Still dont get why the AGC voltage would drop to the tuner, but keyed agc is something I need to re read up on.

so to summarize....

lousy dirty tuner requires careful setting of tuner inbetween channels etc...

clean tuner

good pic now (but stupid me on wrong channel) but jittery

change channel, GREAT pic now and no jitters (I hope).

diff in pic is mostly better contrast and much sharper image.

funny how these things go. I need to remind myself to always check the simplest fix 1st (like the right channel).

well it was on for a couple hours, not s single shake so I will be re installing the tuner, I just hope when I get it all back in the problem stays gone.

Next up will be the tuner on my 67 zenith with the concentric tuner. It needs cleaning AND fixing the UHF so it will turn.

back in and no shakes. Perfect pic, no more issues on changing channels.

I am still not sure what the deal was. I have seen mis tuned channels before, never had this much issue (would just go form snow to intereference looking pic. Anyway its fine now, really odd.

Outside surrounding RF interference. Such as a cell phone. Just the right freq to freak out the signal on that channel

it was odd, it would shake badly esp the top half like a bad oscillation, then loose horz and vert sync, then clear up a bit and be ok. sorta like tearing (which is why I was looking at agc) but ownly sorta, and all the time the actual pic was clean, like the sync pulse was getting clipped. I even switched out the converter box to another tv (I have a AB switch) and it was fine on that tv.

I never did put it on the tv analyst since it cleared up, but that was the next thing try.

oh well at least it gone, just a unsolved puzzle.
