I decided to check out the older TV shops in my area. There are a lot more than I realized. This is the first one I've been too. If I had gotten to it 5 years ago I would have hit the jackpot.

He's been in the business since 1956. He moved to his present location years ago. He got rid of all the old tube sets he had around, including a basement full of round CRT's that he couldn't find use for. He will be disposing of the more modern sets he has now. I don't think he has anything going back past the late '70s.

He has a substantial stash of old RCA power transformers and flybacks. He also has modules for the CTC-74 and Zenith sets. I didn't see anything I needed, but if someone needs something among that which I've mentioned I'd give him a ring.

He's really sharp for someone his age. I asked him if he had ever seen one of those RCA sets that didn't have controls, just a remote and he said "You mean the CTC-74?"

We are losing these guys, and fast. If nothing else, meet your friendly, local TV repairman, get to know him...or her. (yep, recently learned of a now-deceased female TV repairman-uh-repairperson!)

These old guys typically knew a LOT of hints & kinks that never made it into any repair manual, but were often used. THAT kind of smarts will be lost when the few remaining ones die off or "Hang it up"... Kinda like workin' w/your Mom if she baked a cake. Well, in MY case, my Mamaw... She was a Whiz on baking a Pound cake, but she had no recipe' written down anywhere. But, Man-O-Manichevitz, they were Scrumptious... She'd NEVER let me watch her, would "Shoo" me outta her kitchen, if I ever tried...

It's been ONE WHOLE YEAR since I brought in my Philco 116-122 radio chassis to the last known tube repair shop in the metro. If you have any kind of tube electronic devices and your skills are weak you're SOL. For awhile my good friend Walter (around here somewhere) would take my "sows ears" and turn them into "silk purses". No more. What'll I do when my currently working tube sets quit?
