Dont think I've seen that basket-weave grille before. Too bad they "refinished" the cabinet. Looks like they slopped on a thick coat of poly with a barn brush.

I noticed that the original knobs and back cover are still in place. The knobs were probably just set into the holes and glued down--there are almost certainly no controls behind them. The TV has probably been mounted so that the front panel controls are behind the CRT mask; with an arrangement like that the only way to control the set is with the remote.

Two thousand dollars for this thing, however, IMHO, is way, way, way too much. I could see a hefty opening bid for this set if it were in mint, unmodified condition, but not with a cheap Pacific Rim-import color portable in place of the original chassis. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for this in its hacked condition.

BTW, I wonder how many people looking at this TV are being tricked into believing that it is a 1948 Admiral color set. Color television wasn't invented until the early '50s, and not by Admiral. As we know (or should know), color TV was pioneered by RCA in 1953, with their signature peacock being introduced three years later. Admiral had nothing whatsoever to do with any of it.

More Internet flea-market fodder. Trying to dupe people into paying a mint for low-grade junk. It is aggravating and ruins any redeeming qualities eBay might have had (which wasn't much to start with). Yet another digital carny-folk hoping to win the super-eBay-lotto jackpot so he can pay for that new redwood deck around the double-wide.

Hah! At first I thought the thread said TWO DOLLAR Admiral console. I saw a lot of sets go for two dollars each at the Early Television Convention a few days ago. I might be tempted to graft a modern color set into an already-empty $2 cabinet but I'm sure that none of us would intentionally butcher even a low value set.

Here's another listing with that same model Admiral. Only this time it's supposedly been sealed in a crate for decades. I'm curious to see what the set actually looks like and not that photo lifted from tvhistory!

Stored for 35 years but the set is 60 years old so it's not NOS, it was used or at least unboxed for 25 years before hand.

Not worth $1000 to me, NOS in the original crate then maybe, otherwise it's just a well stored used Admiral.

He' says it's "Mint" but it's still sealed in a crate so how does he know that?

It has been un-crated and is obviously far from mint. Plenty of rust has set in. Nice of the seller to continue using the tvhistory.tv picture.

Incidentally, I went to see the Admiral in the second auction -- the one with the basketweave grille that had been crated for 35 years. It's located about a mile from our house.

Yes, the metal's rusty, but the cabinet was better than any un-refinished vintage TV I've ever laid eyes on. There might have been a teeny white water dot on the top. I don't recall other blems.

I sent the seller a follow-up email after the auction ended with no bigs, but got no reply. I'm not going to beg. Maybe he decided to crate it back up and wait another 35 years.
