we got lots of portables. I few new old stock tvs. even a few roundies. the place is amazing. I couldent have imagined it. the pb mostly 4 tube. I got a fey enith 25cc50 and metal table tops. no eat no sleep just 10 hours of tving. yall need to go get the rest

I see some familiar sets too. In one shot, the portacolor looks exactly like mine. And there is a ctc-121J colortrak which I had at one point as well as a late 80's 19" XL-100 (the type with a knob for volume but an LED read-out tuner) which looks just like one I fixed for someone a few years back.

Must be killer to find NOS tv's like this! Very sweet stuff indeed.

Great haul!!!!!!!! I see several smaller Japanese tube type portable color sets. I think those are getting rare these days. I'm hoping to get hold of one of the 7" Panasonic color sets, or maybe a 12" when one shows up.

I have often daydreamed about a find like that...no, their can't be many more situations left like this. I sure wish it were closer, it would have been great just to see it in person. Many thanks for sharing the experience with us all!

Well, I had a lot of fun; but, am worn out and about to find the bed.

I'll post pictures tomorrow; but, I came home with a "last gasp" Sylvania B&W console, a hybrid PB color console, A Zenith 25" flat chassis SS console, A Philco Roundie console on a swivel base, a Sylvania roundie in a black metal cabinet, a '70 21" RCA color console on legs with the hang tag that was likely never sold, a 13" steel cabinet PB color set, a Truetone tube console stereo, a small 9" Sylvania AC/DC B&W, and I bought that blonde Zenith from the shop owner.

We pulled out of SC around 9 AM this morning. Dan (CTC17) headed for LA and Ryan (Audubon) and myself headed for MS. Since we were pulling a trailer, we had to take alternate routes at slower speeds. I think it was around 11:30 PM when we got to my house in MS. We unloaded my stuff off of the trailer and visited with Ryan and his wife for a while before they headed back to New Orleans.

More tomorrow....

Just got home - 22 hours on the road (with a 3 hour stop in Meridian.)

I took/bought
a six foot long Packard Bell console stereo,
a c.1967 Packard Bell color console,
a late-70's Sylvania B&W console,
an early 60's Truetone B&W console,
an early-70's 15" RCA color portable,
an early-70's GE Porta-Color II solid state
an early 60's Philco 19" B&W,
a late-70's Zenith 19" B&W similar to the one I've been looking for,
two Sylvania portable turntables with magnetic carts,
a GE Wildcat,
two cheapie rabbit ears in the boxes,
two last-gasp V-M turntables,
a Glaser-Steers GS-77 :),
probably something else I'm forgetting
and a glider rocker my wife liked.

And yes, I plan to go back one day. There was a '74 Teledyne (sans the Packard Bell label) console I had no room for, and a weirdo tabletop Motorola Quasar with the cabinet antennas and UHF deleted from the factory.

I'll post some pictures this evening and try to start writing a story about this insanity!

There was an oddball 19" Sharp remote color tube set from the early '70's that I almost grabbed; but, ran out of room on the trailer. There are still several Zenith CCII consoles left as well as at least one Zenith flat chassis solid state set. I brought home one Zenith (25EC58 ?) flat chassis console and there was another 25DC57 flat chassis console that I twisted Dan's arm into taking. There was also a '76 Sylvania TV/stereo combo that I pulled out to take; but, ran out of room on the trailer. And, what all three of us brought home was only a small dent as to what's in that place.

There were also several late-70's & early 80's NOS Sylvania GT-Matic and Supersets, a large GE Performance Series Console, several hybrid Packard Bell consoles & tabletops, heck, it's hard to remember - there was so much it becomes a blur...

Lots of nice late GTE/early NAP Sylvanias though.

Would have been all over these. I was just going to ask if any of the 80's sets got saved. Since no one seems to save them, I bet they'll be very rare someday.

That Sylvania B&W console that I brought back was made in March, 78. It has snow and audio with a bright CRT. It's actually a nice B&W for such a late model.

There were many of those E45/E48 Sylvania's from the late '70's and some had the black faced CRT. Would have brought one or two back had I had the space. There was also a "D" series hybrid Sylvania console with the slide controls. I can't remember if that one stayed or went back to LA with Dan. There was also another Sylvania console with doors that looked to be from the late '60's or early '70's.

'70 RCA 21" console. CTC38. Has audio and snow. This set has a hang tag like it would be a new TV; but, I can tell that it's had some use by looking at the chassis and it has some non-RCA tubes. Possibly, this was a display set that was on all day and needed repairs along the way.

Did I read somewhere that you are going to chronicle the trip - a story/picture book or an e-zine article here on VK would be fantastic!

I'd like to take my time writing up a story using all the pictures Dan took while we were there. I was too busy looking & loading and never took my camera out the van!

Those late-70's Sylvania B&W consoles actually look pretty fancy compared with the picutres of other last-gasp B&W consoles that I've seen. I'll bet not very many of those were made or sold! (especially at a price of $399 !)

Speaking of Sylvania, those Exponent-series portable phonographs were really top-notch for that type of equipment. Decent changers, magnetic cartridges, and surprisingly good speakers.

I too was surprised at how fancy these Sylvania consoles were with their lighted dials and decent looking cabinets. Much nicer looking than the late '70's Zenith models.

Also, I'd like to thank Ryan and Dan for making this whole thing possible. Had it not been for their efforts, this stuff would have probably met the crusher.


I finished checking all the CRT's in the consoles and the roundies and they are all very strong. I connected the DTV converter to the CTC38 and it works; but, the picture won't focus. Same goes for the Sylvania roundie, along with it needing a tuner and control cleaning. So, things are getting off to a great start.

I didn't mention it before, but I damaged a nerve in my back March 27th and couldn't walk for three days. Found out I have osteoarthritis. I was very worried I would have to back out, but God is good and the back healed quickly. I was able to do all that driving and a bunch of lifting without significant pain or having to use medication. But Bryan and Dan did the majority of the lifting - I packed everything in the vans (I'm pretty good at that.)

I talked to Dan a few hours ago and he was approaching Albuquerque. He said the highway in Mississippi was very rough and he was worried about the sets, but that nothing appeared to have moved. That's what I wanted to hear. I basically lined the sides with consoles and packed tabletops and CRT boxes between them, using furniture blankets to keep CRT necks from contacting their neighbor and keeping everything snug. I hope he takes a picture before he unloads it.

great pictures!what a goldmine.the solid state sylvanias are very desirable to me as is that d-16 slide control hybrid.that may have been sylvanias best set ever.tremendous crts and the design was simple and easy to repair.second only to the flat chassis zenith as the best ever with the xl100 a close third.your trip brought some excitement to a boring year for me.i am glad you shared this with us!

I'll clarify: Dan found a brochure for the '74 Teledyne line (Packard Bell was hardly mentioned in the brochure and not put on the sets at all that last year.) The hybrid sets were dubbed "Multi State" :D I kinda like that.

How did you know exactly how I felt about opening the Packard Bell table top sets and finding out they were Japan made!!

Ill get the sets unloaded tomorrow and have a better idea of how what did. From the 5 table tops I pulled out today it looks like Packard Bell was putting their names on tube Mitsubishi sets.

They're out there. Keep your eyes and ears open. If they've been around for awhile, or sat abandoned for quite some time, they can most likely be found in what are now run-down areas of town that are now off the beaten path, or industrial areas.

A guy I know was told of a place that was located in a basement of an apartment complex that was going to be razed. We had to get a permit to go in, because the utilities had been shut off and it was deemed hazardous. I didn't want anything out of it, but it was fun to help.

At first, I thought you were playing a joke. Then, I talked to Ryan and realized that you weren't kidding. I'm very sorry that this happened and hope that, once you start unloading TV's, you find that the damage is not as bad as you first thought. Keep us posted.

Got all the stuff unloaded and packed in the garage. Its going to take a year plus to sort through everything and test it.
The sets I did test all had some little problem. The good thing is the crts are all strong and all seem to have good hv.
The first one on the bench now is the 20x1c38 table top. It has all kinds of weird problems. contrast pot does nothing, pulled in on the sides with a moving S pattern, color is not consistent through the picture.

It problem could be the issue magnesium field moving state over state which colors electrons beam. To repair electric deguass field wire. I seen the is problem before!!

I just pulled apart one of the packard bell portables that looks like a port a color and it is. The tag inside says GE H4 Chassis. There is a tag on the back of the crt that says 'made expressly for teledyne packard bell'

I opened that Japanese PB color portable and I suspect that it was built by Mitsubishi or NEC. All the tubes are branded NEC. In fact, the chassis looks just like the one in an early '70's Truetone portable that our family used to own.

Opened one of the PB BW sets and same thing. GS SE chassis. Whole set has like 5 compactrons in it.

I have opened a few with the Mitsubishi chassis too. They seem to be junk. The crts are dead in those and they have about 50 of those blue bulging axial electrolytics.

Theres one set Im in loves with so far. Its a PB all tube American Made wood table top. The crt is done though. Besides being weak the cataract is so bad its unusable. Im thinking about getting it rebuilt.

I think I would concentrate on that USA made set.

I wonder who built those two 9" B&W's in the colored plastic cases.

I guess by the early '70's, PB read the writing on the wall and discovered that it was cheaper to import it's smaller screen sets from Japan instead of building them at their own factory here in the USA.

You may very well have the only Packard Bell Portacolor in existence :)

That Truetone B&W console I got was made by Admiral - a hot chassis hybrid with Compactrons. In fact, it's identical to the set in the '69 Admiral brochure posted on http://tvhistory.tv

Radiotvphononut, what ever became of this location? If you ever get to go again, I'd love to go with y'all. Not just to get TV's, but to meet you, and Dan and Ryan. I just got through watching Dan's video - that trip sure looked like a lot of fun.
