I'm taken aback! It shows the danger of seeking answers from strangers on a site like answer.yahoo. You need to take them with a grain of salt.

I'm just amazed that it was found in an alley. Of course two years ago if I had read this I would have just said "so?" in my ignorance.

So he really FOUND A CT-100 IN AN ALLEY?

I seem to recall hearing something about this a few days ago, but I can't recall where. Still, it's kind of an incredible story, so John, please fill us in on the details if you can.

(I guess I'm going to have to start checking out the alleys around here!)

Anything is possible, but it's a red flag for suspicion that he knew the year, and it's not written anywhere I know of, on a CT-100. He needed either his own knowledge, or he has done enough research to know what it is, and how to go about checking it's condition. I've found rarer sets in alleys than CT-100s, so I can believe that part easily.

Well, the back label says CT-100 and the chassis is stamped CTC2. Both are visible in the alley photos. In about 5 seconds, he could type two numbers into a Google search box and come up with 1954 references, including a Wikipedia article and Youtube video.

Do you know anyone with a computer who doesn't know how to do an Internet search? That's about the only thing that my 83-year old Dad does remember how to do :)

Wonder if the copper pinch is broken off... I remember seeing one once with a badly broken base cap, but the pinch was intact, it required some effort to extend the some leads that had broken off, but it turned out ok

I completely believed the alley theory, as I've picked up a CBS-Columbia 360 color set with the 19VP22, and a Westinghouse 22" color set from alleys of Los Angeles. A collector friend of mine also got a mint-condition CT-100 (bad CRT, of course), from a (*derogatory term for one concerned with the environment*) who called around patiently to find someone to haul it away rather than to throw it out due to the poisonous, environmental hazards within.

I worked for RCA when they reached the CTC numbering 100. They skipped "100", going from 99 to 101. I had a CTC101, with the comb filter, and the infamous unreliable flyback.

Is the CRT in that CT100 any good? That socket crumbling like that doesn't look good, though it might still be airtight and wire leads connectable. And be sure to get the serial numbers for the database.

Sounds like prime hunting grounds. Here, it's illegal to put electronics in the landfill. You bring it to a recycling event and pay a fee. No "picking" is allowed for liability reasons. They won't even let you take the stuff out of your car by yourself. You just open the back and point.

Last time I attended, they were loading pallets of junky 1980+ TVs into a semi trailer with a forklift. Nothing that would bring a tear to your eye.

Yeah, I was kinda incredulous about the alley connection at first, but I forgot about the Andrea 2-F-12 that Chuck A hates me for finding in a barn. :)
