Bought this picture on eBay.

Can anyone identify the sets on the bench?
They appear to be the same make but different size CRT's, perhaps the Tech was comparing something trying to solve a problem?

He might have been retrofitting larger CRTs into old sets? It doesn't look like that chassis was meant to hold that big CRT :scratch2:

Two sets tilted up: maybe he had an intermittent in one or he was "cooking" one waiting to see what would happen, while he troubleshot the other one. As a kid I quivered with excitement looking at all the goodies in a shop like this. At Doc Wilson's shop a tech gave me a nice 8" speaker hanging on the wall. Heaven.

Lots of nice nostalgia here.
1. That's my old GE Telechron clock that I had as a kid up there, it was red.
2. Black with white tracer cloth asbestos cord going off somewhere to a soldering iron, no doubt.
3. Metal binding around the workbench top: the top would have probably been linoleum or possibly smooth masonite.
4. Dig the pencil sharpener.
5. "Blah blah blah blah CASH" sign on the wall.
6. Real men handle pix tubes by the neck and don't wear safety glasses. :yes:

Also a Zenith signal generator is seen on the right. I did not know Zenith
made that kind of equipment, anyone has seen this before?

It looks just like the piece of Hickock equipment above it. I would guess that it was rebadged for Zenith.

Wonderful photo. I'm guessing the photographer told him to pile things up at random until he "looked busy." Be glad they didn't make him hold a soldering iron in his mouth.

When I gave Weekly World News permission to use a photo from my website (I am not making this up), they Photoshopped a TV from another photo onto my workbench. I guess it's called creative license :)

have not seen it before, but it could be something designed and built during WWII for war use and then adapted for civilian use.

I suspect the large chassis is a Westinghouse, partially from the tuner placement. The other thing that makes me think so is the way the video IF area looks. It was '67 or so when I cannibalized mine, but it looks awfully familiar...
The one behind it looks similar, but I don't recognize the knob or dial that is visible.

I was thinking he was upgrading to a larger picture tube-see how the one with the large crt no longer fits in the cutout in the chassis. So he is holding the 12" crt that was previously in the chassis, now equipped with a monster 17 or 19" crt.

You beat me to it... WESTINGHOUSE!

And I think that photo could be staged, as the service manual looks to be a Zenith binder. Not sure, as Westinghouse may have had similar title pages on their manuals. If it's staged, that would explain two shiny new 1953-ish Westinghouse chassis, which might have been removed from new stock TVs for sale.
