View Full Version : Rebuilding the 15gp22: A final report
John Folsom 03-12-2010, 06:39 PM Late in February 2010, Bob Galanter and I traveled to Hawkeye Picture
Tube Co. in Des Moines, IA to have another go at rebuilding 15GP22s.
Bob and I each brought an under vacuum dud tube, and a known leaker
tube. The plan was to rebuild the two tubes that were under vacuum, and have
Scotty install dummy guns and stems on the two leakers, so we
could take them to a Michigan University lab for leak testing.
We had with us some of the redesigned Richland stems used successfully to
rebuild the first 15GP22, and several rebuilt 15GP22 gun assemblies mounted
on the new style Richland stems.
Scotty first installed the dummy guns and stems onto the two
leaker tubes without incident. Next he installed rebuilt 15GP22 guns onto the
two under vacuum 15GP22s. One of the two stems that were mounted to the
under vacuum tubes, cracked while the tube was cooling down. We had extra
guns, and the second attempt was successful.
The two "non-leaker" tubes went into the oven and began the baking and
evacuation cycle. (first photo) Bob's tube had aluminum filled high temperature
epoxy applied to the glass to metal joints around the flange of the
tube. My tube had vacseal applied to the same areas.
Within a couple of hours, the mechanical backer vacuum pump was
making gurgling noises. (this sound from the pump is a sign that a tube is leaking)
The pump for Bob's tube was turned off. Bob and I went to the motel room for the evening.
In the morning, Scotty informed us that my tube had also failed in
the oven, during the tip-off cycle. Tip off is is where a
electric heating element heats the glass exhaust stem and causes it
to melt and collapse, sealing the tube shut. Opening the now cool
oven door revealed the following damages.
Bob's tube had failed because the
epoxy material's difference in temperature coefficient of expansion,
had pulled up flakes of glass from the surface, which propogated a crack
around the face of the CRT, at the glass to metal joint. A whack with
a rubber mallet separated the faceplate from the front of the CRT.
My CRT had failed due to a crack in the stem. And in addition, there was
a crack in the phosphor dot plate. So this leaves both of these
tubes destroyed.
Later that week Bob and I took the 2 leaker CRTs and a curing oven to
a Michigan University lab where leak testing was performed using a helium
leak detector. This equipment consists of a mechanical vacuum pump
and a turbo-vacuum pump, which can evacuate the CRT rapidly, and a mass
spectrometer that looks for the presence of helium in the exhaust
from the CRT.(second photo)
Leak checks on Bob's tube revealed two closely spaced leaks at the
edge weld where the 2 metal flange pieces were heli-arc welded
together. Leak checks on my tube revealed leaks at the glass to metal
seams.
Bob attempted to seal the leak in his tube by apply a non-
filled version of the high temperature epoxy, but it was not
possible to keep the epoxy in place on the leaks where we wanted it,
and so the attempt to seal these weld leaks failed.
We put vacseal on the glass to metal joints
on my tube, and within the limits of the equipment,
it appeares that the leaks have been sealed.
We had also brought with us, a 21AXP22 CRT which Scotty had previously
rebuilt for me, which had leaked after removal from Scotty's oven.
Leak checks on this tube revealed a leak at the flange weld line on
this tube. These leaks in the welds on the CRTs was unexpected, and
adds a new level of complexity to our problems.
Bob and I returned to our respective homes, and the three leaker CRTs
stayed with Bob. He began some experiments on a flange from a broken
15GP22 to see if he could braze the flange weld. Preliminary results
are encouraging.
Today I was troubleshooting a strange and difficult to isolate high
voltage arcing problem with my Motorola 15" color set. I decided to
use the only successfully rebuilt 15GP22 from our attempt back in November of 2009,
to determine if the problem was with the Motorola CRT or mounting fixture.
Both the Motorola CRT and the rebuilt 15GP22, are mounted on slide-in wooden CRT holders,
so it was easy to simply swap CRTs on their holders, and put the Motorola yoke on the rebuilt CRT.
Upon power up, there was no raster. A few quick checks revealed a
dreadful purple glow in the neck of the rebuilt 15GP22! Argggggh! The tube has
sprung a leak.(third photo)
Discussing this with Bob, and considering everything we have done to date,
and the fact that we still have unresolved stem cracking issues, we
agree that we can no longer justify the expense of additional
attempts to rebuild tubes. Maybe in the future, if CRT rebuilding
can be set up at the ETF museum, and the overhead cost of rebuild
attempts becomes much lower, we may consider continuing the effort. But
for now at least, I think we have done all that we can justify doing.

Reading this at 04:00 AM in Paris and feeling depressed.
Even though i've known this info since 48 hours, i feel that the
"big silence/zero reply" from the TV collector community is not a good show of support for two TV collectors/engineers/afficianados who went WAY beyond & all stops removed to get those darn 15Gs to work again.
Come on guys! let's have a round of applause and Kudos for John and Bob for all their efforts over the last 5-6 years to get 15Gs rebuilt. What they have done is not in vain, and even though the announced closing of Hawkeye is a serious blow, the knowledge gained lives on and will be applied successfully at the future ETF rebuild site or elsewhere.
The ETF meeting takes place next month, why not have John and Bob as guests of honor of a diner at this get-together. I, for one, will gladly contribute to this project (Steve; practicalities?)
Come on Gentlemen! let's show some support and honor properly these two outstanding members of our close-knit early TV community.

This whole effort has always been a ling shot, and it has been, and still is, a grand adventure. No regrets! Thanks for your support, and maybe RACS will come through! :-)
oldtvman 03-12-2010, 10:12 PM that's a shame! It's too bad that the Chinese or Russians couldn't run out a supply of 15g clone crt's, I know it wouldn't be the same but at least the sets would still continue to operate.

That is indeed very sad news after all of the effort that has been put into the project. That picture of the purple glowing gun brought back the memory of one of the worst experiences that I have had related to this hobby, I can't even begin to imagine how you must have felt. I am at a loss for words !

I coulda stood there, wrung my hands, rolled my eyes, looked sad, went "Omigawd !, Oh, Lordy !" trembled the coffe cup in my hand....Seriously, wish there was somethin' I could do...I'll NEVER have a set that uses one of these tubes, never even SEEN one, but that ain't the point..

Guess I should see about getting my first leaky 21AX back from Scotty some time before he shuts down. I now have two, so if there is any hope in the future for the bigger tubes, I have duds to contribute, one probably a fast leaker and the other probably a slower one.

dreyfoos 03-13-2010, 09:44 AM I feel a need to add to the “eulogy” for the 15Geez. It was always a high mountain for our fearless comrades to climb. But as John Folsom said, it was a grand adventure – and our lives require adventure. In many ways, “adventure” – along with avoiding starvation, etc., defines our human lives. An adventure is something we take on with no guarantees. Above, I used past tense, but I’m not without optimism that they or others will eventually succeed. Who can say how they might eventually build on their new understanding and find the key(s) that leads to total victory over the complex challenge our 15G guys confronted?
May I digress a wee bit?
I guess I’m one of the few who ever saw a color picture on a 15G set, back when they were still “new.” It was on our 15G Admiral and I’m reminded how tricky it was to get a decent picture – in Wichita, Kansas, over-the-air. At that time, about 1957, those sets were already obsolete and we bought ours for $65. The seller had won it in a contest and had less than zero interest in keeping it. (Few 15G’s were ever sold and I’ve always wondered how many of those Admirals were ever manufactured – let alone, sold.)
But I was just young enough and naive enough to believe that I could impress the neighbors with COLOR TV. It was primitive but it was fun. Not easy to watch a world series on that little screen. I was always trying to tweak the convergence and purity – with no instrumentation to assist. The only repair I remember was ordering a replacement focus control; the original couldn’t hold up to the load on it. Eventually my teenage interests moved on and I don’t even remember the final disposition of that set. I probably used the proceeds to “fix up” my first car.
Just now, my memory clicked onto the 19” Motorola that my brother and I also cadged along the way to my first 21” color set – a 1958, or so, Sylvania – with its unique ratcheting tuner lever. It was probably a $500 floor model that had set around for too long – I think we paid $100.
Allow me to digress even further.
Yesterday, we went to a Best Buy store to see a Samsung 3-D LCD model set up for demonstration. It actually brought back a memory from 1954, of our dad taking us downtown to see a COLOR TV (Westinghouse) set up in the window of a department store – probably the only color TV in Wichita – other than a broadcast monitor back at the transmitter. We were part of a small crowd straining to see the washed out picture (summertime, about 7PM) of Ed Sullivan’s Toast of the Town show from the local CBS affiliate, KTVH. If that was color TV then that demo would never sell any. Neither would yesterday’s demo at Best Buy. Three sales people fumbling around that Samsung – three who seemed totally incapable of demonstrating 3-D or understanding any of the physics that made it possible. When they handed us cardboard glasses with blue and red cellophane lenses, I knew that we had a serious problem and would not likely be seeing any 3-D TV that day. Later, one of them told me that the (necessary) Samsung viewing glasses hadn’t arrived yet.
Better luck next time to the Best Buy people. And, better luck and future success to all those motivated and talented people who contributed to the 15Geez effort.

Guys like this are what keep our hobby going, and keep the history of early television alive.

But...15Gs had been rebuilt in the past ($135 in an old Allied catalog I have)...so...if it has been done before it can be done again. A big thank you for a riveting saga...with possibly the last chapter yet to be written.
kx250rider 03-13-2010, 04:19 PM Very disappointed on your behalf, and also for the many other people who volunteered time, money, and duds for this attempt. This only points out how lucky anyone is, who owns (or at least has been afforded the opportunity to see) a working 15" set. It is, I guess, only a matter of time until they're all leaky. Just thinking back to when I first started getting hold of CT-100s and other 15" sets in the early 80s, I recall only one compromised tube. The others all had good vacuum. Even a real crappy junker CT-100 that I got from a TV dismantler in South Central LA, which had been picked up in an alley, had a usable tube. By the mid 90s, I started seeing more & more of them failed; even in sets that had been working only a few years earlier. Times are changed now, forever.

marty59 03-13-2010, 06:52 PM Technology is a wonderful thing but we lose so much as we move on, sadly. I know we can't take back what we've lost along the way, but now everything is so "throw-away" as opposed to servicability/reliablility/quality. Sure, there was the fasination factor (as in some ways today), but the "appreciation" factor of what was then is now something almost taken for granted in todays society.
John, Bob, I hope there is still something to be gained from your efforts and everybody involved as there has been "much appreciation" not only for what you've attempted but also sharing your experiences with all of us too!
Now if only we can clone Scotty....

leadlike 03-14-2010, 03:43 PM That's a terrible shame. Your efforts have been much admired by me and my friends. I suppose we should be grateful that these component failures are the exception and not the rule for repairing vintage tvs.
This does remind me of a project I was involved with several years ago, where we were adding magnetic soundtracks to unexposed 8mm film (mag sound stock had been discontinued for some time by Kodak). About all we learned was how many different ways our system could fail, and after untold grief, we only had a few rolls successfully done. But the other night, much like your newly rebuilt and now gassy 15g, I put on those old reels only to find those soundtracks have deteriorated to a muffled mess-in only a few years. Oh well. We can't have everything.

Yes, that's very sad news. Congratulations for the wonderful effort. Seems that what's really dashing efforts are failures related to vacuum processes (evacuation, sealing, and leaks) trying to revive these old tubes. While the tread is titled "A Final Report". Are there any plans to provide the forum with a more complete report, such as a review of SWOT (successes, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) activities?

I once had an engineering prototype 15in color CRT that RCA supplied to a member of the NTSC development team supporting the FCC color TV standard hearings in NY. I believe it was Hazeltine. I got it from an RCA engineer in 1963 who built a chassis for it from parts of the special component kit RCA was selling for the production 15GP22. I traded a cherry 3in Pilot T37 with case and magnifier for the 15G... proto, CRT mounting board and partially complete chassis sometime in 1963. I recall the CRT had a shadow mask/dot screen assembly that was put together with a bunch of tiny nuts a & bolts but I don’t recall if it had a metal or glass cone. It was definitely a handmade, possibly a one of a kind engineering item. I still have the documentation that came with the RCA kit. I attempted to fire up the CRT and chassis to see if anything worked. With no B++ or HV applied, all filaments lit-up. When I activated the B++ there was a flash in the gun assembly and the HV fuse blew. Disaster, the red filament was dead, After the required OH SHT ! I knew the project was over so I put everything back on the shelf. A couple of years later I trashed everything. Even dead, the prototype 15GP22 would be a museum display today, but in mid ’60s how was I to know? At least I still have the 21CT55 I got about the same time…..Tom

I gotta ask... have they *actually* taken apart the funnel/front panel assembly, removed the troublesome metal flanges, perhaps lapped and acid fortified the edges, somehow mounted the shadow mask/phosphor plate and frited the works back together?

It sounds like you have a viable process worked out. Currently, I'm not privy to the RACS frit seal protocol.

My guess is that what I have outlined above would be a 1 in a million long shot... the most likely outcome of trying to get the 15GP22 apart and removing the flanges would be a heap of broken glass :tears:
If the folks at RACS *have* been able to do something like this... hats off to them! Next trick would be walking on water!

Well after 3 pages of glum news, we all need a "Booster Shot", including myself.
Here are 3 pictures of the ETF's 15GP22 after Frit-Glass resealing which took place early 2010.
In the meantime, both guns have been rebuilt, one by RACS, the other by Western. RACS routinely has some model guns rebuilt by Western, so this 2nd gun tagged along with a bunch of others sent to them.
They are now ready to do the rebuild attempt, most likely within the next 10 days. This was delayed because of an urgent batch of radar CRTs to be rebuilt ASAP while the French Navy boat was in dry dock.
Our goal is to ship a working tube early enough in April so that Steve's team has time to install it in time for the convention.
About the frit-glass process, i've had long conversations with them. They use an in-house process refined over years (starting in 1974), but i understood that there is much leeway in the mix of ingredients to cope with variable parameters such as tube size, amplitude of leaks, all glass or glass to metal seals, resistance to altitude ("flying CRTs"),...
This modifies the basic formula to target specific needs, essentially compromises between fluidity (filling cracks/metal fatigue cricks), thickness (filling large leaks, vacuum resistance and mechanical solidity), tube processing temperatures,...
The CRT is assessed for data prior to sealing, then modifications to the core frit-glass formula are determined by discussion between the Engineering Manager and the glass-working experts handling "the hot stuff".
As with all trades where years of human experience are everything, there is a grey zone between simply following the recipe and 30 years of experience of a glass worker where by instinct he will say: the mix is too fluid, thicken it, or some other simple-seeming comment which can make the difference between success or failure.
To sum it up, wish us luck, we only have ONE 15G until ETF convention time...

After all it took months for the rebuilt tube to leak down and it's still not completely to air.
This would avoid the problems of differing expansion rates in the materials.

I don't know anything about frit glass, but I can tell you that our epoxy will seal vacuum leaks and it will also stand the temperature of 600 degrees F, for 6 hours in the evacuation oven without any degradation what so ever. It bonds to glass so well that the only way to remove it is to GRIND it off.
IN our experiments we found that a THICK layer of our high temp high vacuum epoxy became brittle and was subject to cracking. The tube will be flexing at the ultor ring when a vacuum is applied. We have since changed our epoxy protocol to painting a thin layer on the ultor ring in hopes that it will be more compliant to the flexing of the ultor ring when subjected to the vacuum.
To Eric:
Your assumption would be true for a dud 15G tube that is still under vacuum prior to the rebuilding process. We now believe that even an under vacuum 15G must be put through a sealing process prior to rebuild to prevent what happened to our first successfull rebuild. And yes, if we had even sealed the tube after we rebuilt it (which we did not think we needed to do) we would probably still have a working tube today.
However, for 15G that is full of air, it is unlikely that the leak would be small enough to give you enough time to seal the tube post evacuation. It would be a crap shoot at best. Sometimes it might work and other times it would be a total bust, if the leak rate was to big.
Presently working on the PowerPoint presentation for the ETF. So far I am up to 100 slides and counting. Better take some NO-DOZE, this one is going to be rather lengthy.

- Frit Glass is a paste, it has to be baked at high-temp to become ceramic-hard and therefore vacuum-tight.
For Old_TV_Nut: Could you explain a little more of what we are seeing in the pictures?
You are seeing the rim of the ETF's 15G donor CRT re-sealed with Frit-Glass after leak detection. Really not spectacular, huh! just some beige ceramic-hard glass sealing up this heavy leaker (rust & metal-fatigue cricks under the microscope) - think 1952 De Havilland "Comet" 1st ever passenger jet midair explosions - same process in progress. Only time will tell after complete rebuild and IF it lasts if this was the successful formula.

I am in no way knowledgeable about glass blowing and/or manufacture of CRT's...but SOMETHING seems amiss here with all of this. After all...at one time, not all that long ago...these 15GP/HP22 tubes WERE manufactured and /or rebuilt by RCA and others. Evidently, it was at least partially successful, as some of them still work, and at least often worked for at least 10 years or more after being built, before "giving up the (vacuum) ghost". And since they were made before...someone MUST still have the plans and/or machinery somewhere...or not???
So...what has happened to the 'original way of making these tubes"? Is it something like"there was only a couple of guys who knew how, and they took their secrets with them when they died long ago", or such??
Or...were these tubes GARBAGE from the beginning for RCA and did only one out of maybe 10 of them made actually work, for any length of time?

Not only did these tubes have different glass than later ones, they had an internal phosphor plate, so there was definitely a conflict between the temperature schedule for sealing and evacuation and protecting the plate from thermal damage. You also need to consider that the qualities of the glass change each time it is heated and cooled, so a schedule that works for original manufacture may not work for rebuild. I'm sure there are many other expert knowledge items that I don't know about, which disappeared when the last 15GP22 line was shut down.

You ask many questions but here are a few answers.
First, the 15GP22 was never successfully rebuilt by anyone except RCA. Guns were not available. RCA had the only source. Anyone else that tried to rebuild this tube used a standard 21" roundie delta gun which did not provide for electrostatic convergence and was not a compatible rebuild.
RCA made the only production run of these tubes for general availability. Some other manufacturers "experimented" with limited experimental prototypes, but never put anything into production. As for the machinery and equipment that was used, I am sure it has all long been scrapped.

The answer to your question is Yes, sort of. I will explain what I mean....
At the time these tubes were made, RCA was forging into new territory, and they were under a lot of pressure from the government in meating deadlines to demonstrate the viability of a "compatible all electronic" color tv system. In order to get the federal government to approve the RCA system over the CBS system, RCA had to demonstrate it's viability. So RCA was in a mad race to get something out to the public.
So they had to do whatever they could to produce a tri color crt in record time. As a result they drew on whatever methods and technology they had used in the past. There was no frit glass at the time so they could not make a two piece crt out of just glass. There was no way to join a two piece all glass crt. The 15G had be made in two pieces so you can install the shadow mask and phosphor dot plate inside. Photo deposition of phosphor dots had not been invented at the time the 15G was produced. That came the following year invented by CBS. And all glass color crt's did not come into existance until 1957 with the introduction of the 21CYP22 in the CTC7 series, when frit glass became available.
So the only way to join a two piece glass crt envelope together was to fuse the front and rear glass sections to a metal ring (bonding glass to metal was a perfected technology) and heli-arc the two metal rings together. There are more issues to deal with that I will explain in my presentation at the ETF.
But sufice it to say that the 15G was a "Rube Goldberg" style picture tube...IE: it was a complicated solution to a problem.
All you guys need to come the ETF convention and view the presentation. There will also be a number of touchy feely show and tell items that will be of interest.

I was quite surprised when I noticed not long ago that the page you found had reappeared on their website. They took it down years ago after much of what I'm sure they considered pestering by the collector community. Maybe they thought we had forgotten about them?

And I notice that their web page hasn't been updated since 2006. That's kind of a long time to keep it up if they're not actually in business.
One company I used to use for special circuit boards that I was very happy with went out of business. They kept their web page up for several years and even kept answering the phone, but when I'd ask for a quote they'd tell me they had closed down.
You'd think they'd remove the web page.

John has done some awesome work to preserve TV history many thanks on trying. I recently got rid of a TV project because that too was fritted CRTs and the cost to ship back and forth to France was too great.
It's a shame these tubes are so tempermental given their complex structure that provides many complications. If someone would experiment making an all glass crt 15g w/ old phosphor face? Very involved but a cleaner and simpler design.
That CRT patch works good ONLY if not a purists. Thompson or others @ RCA trashed critical engineering data needed probaly years ago to rebuild this complicated tube.The efforts here are great, remember RCA spent years developing Color CRTs.
I'm interested in a ct-100 if anyone has one kicking around.

Wouldn't that eliminate some of the uniqueness of the CT-100? As I've learned here in the past few weeks, it used a different color reproduction method than most color tube TVs.
David Roper 04-13-2010, 11:28 PM The question keeps coming up and I keep asking if, assuming any 15" color tube could or would be reproduced by somebody, it might not be much more practical to consider making new 15HP22s. That's the first curved shadow mask type with the phosphors directly on the inside surface of the screen rather than on a plate.

Interesting! I don't think that I have ever seen a picture of an early 15" set that did not have a CRT with an internal mask... Can someone perhaps post one?
A tube constructed in this manner (with the troublesome flanges designed out) might well be easier to fabricate today. I really like the funky looking internal mask, but having a tube that actually worked be great!

Sorry, I stated it poorly.... I mean a simplified tube like the 15HP22, which has fewer parts to deal with and in addition, join the panel and funnel together with a frit seal instead of the pesky flanges. Such a tube would contain much less metal inside the bottle (perhaps reducing gas), eliminate the leaky flange areas, and also provide a slightly larger picture area (about 116 sq inch instead of 88).

Yes! If only Corning had developed devitrifying frit earlier our CRTs would likely be in better shape today. The first use in the 21CYP22 would appear to be in 1958.
This brings up a question... the 22EP22 was produced by Westinghouse in 1956.. Unpublished pix courtesy of CRT historian Peter Keller show the CRT and panel/funnel seal area...there is no frit bead! Anybody know how the seal was made?

But there is absolutely no sign of the usual cream colored frit bead on the tube... perhaps they used some early solder glass type of material?...I don't think they could have done a flame seal, because of the thickness of the glass, and close proximity to the screen and shadow mask. :scratch2:

eberts 04-17-2010, 02:24 PM That is a flame seal. It looks like a standard B&W bulb with a modified front panel to hold the shadow mask. It's unusual because it also is aluminized. Glass bulbs were thinner then, they used curved bulbs and safety issues were not the top priority. That's probably why it didn't make production, heat from the glass welding warped the shadow masks.

ohohyodafarted 05-09-2010, 05:26 PM AFter several weeks of preliminary preparation, I embarked on another phase of the 15GP22 project.
AFter doing some groundwork to find a skilled welder with the proper TIG welding equipment, I located Dave the welder. Dave has a very high tech and up to date shop with the latest in welding technology.
I brought Dave a Kovar ring from a broken 15G for him to practice on and the tig welds he made on the test ring looked wonderful.
So this Saturday I took a 15GP22 and a 21AXP22 To dave to be welded. We had previously tested these tubes with a Helium leak detector at the lab at MSU, and located leaks on the welded seam of both tubes, and marked their location. I had Dave re-weld these defective areas on both tubes. Then I drove from Milwaukee to EAst Lansing and John Yurkon re-tested the tubes for leaks again to see if Dave's welding cured the leaks.
I regret to report that of the 4 welds, that were performed, 3 of them still leaked when tested. Upon close examination under a microscope, we could see that there was some minor porisity and some irregularities in the welding. By comparison, the original RCA welds were done on an automated machine which produced very consistant welds. So it was to be expected that welding by hand would have some inconsistancy.
It is apparent that to cure the weld line leaks, it may take multiple trys, re-welding each leak, and then leak testing after each attempt, in order to seal the leaking welds.
Without a having a leak Helium leak detector to test and re-test at our immediate disposal, the sealing of the tubes is not going to move forward. It is far to inconvenient to drive 700 miles round trip to test welds, and besides, we don't want to out stay our Welcome at MSU.
However, it is encouraging to note that I had sealed the glass/kovar innterface of the 15G with the epoxy we had been testing, and it did indeed seal the glass to Kovar leaks, on the aforementioned 15G.
At this point we are pretty much at the end of the road for John and myself. We feel it's to much of a gamble to seal tubes and rebuild them, and then to just cross our fingers that we have sealed all the leaks. So until a Helium leak detector falls in our lap, rebuilding 15G's here in the US is on an indefinite hold.
Fortunately it seems that RACS in France will be able to take up where John and I have left off. Perhaps when the equipment from Hawkeye is installed and up and running at the ETF in Hilliard, we may be able to proceed with more attempts in rebuilding 15G's here in the U.S.

I wish I could find out what this substance is, and report. I will try to pick the minds of the engineers. Whoever it is makes this substance. Is there any way to remove the metal mask and install this stuff, and reinstall the mask?

That really sucks having to drive back and forth to test for leaks. No matter what, Bob and John deserve a huge thanks for working so hard to do what hasn't been done for 50 years. You guys worked harder on this than anyone ever has I think. You have success and screen shots to prove it, too bad that damn tube had to leak but that's RCA's fault for that crappy ultor ring design. I hope we can someday resume rebuilding here in the USA. Thanks again you guys for all your hard work and keeping us informed the entire time so we can follow your progress. My fingers are crossed on future rebuild attempts.
