Well, I found onother one, this one was in Lincoln, CA at an estate sale. Clean and not sure if it works yet. This set is probably older than the other Magnavox I have. I have two phantom remotes and I took a peek inside the cabinet and theflyback is on the left so the chassis is older. Also it has a replacement CRT, it's an RCA hi lite dated 9th month of 1981. No cataracts, thats a plus.

It does have the big 15" woofers and AstroSonic sound!!!:thmbsp:

Cool thing it has a repair tag on it repaired here in Carmicheal, CA. Close to my house.

nice and with those 15" woofers it gonna sound GREAT.

I hope you do the stereo mod to the tv circuit, drive the astro direct from the box, makes fine tuning the sound/video a non issue (just get the best pic since the box is tuning the sound)

Yeah thats a great idea! I know these sets are finicky with fine tunung AGC and sound buzz issues.. I thought it was just mine but I hear others have the same issues.

Hey guys, I started to look into this set today (no work cause it snowed like 2 feet and nobody in CA can drive in the snow and took out a power line)...

Anyway, so I checked out the guts, cleaned out the innards and the fly looks ok, caps visually good. Stereo looks clean and no visable issues, and the record player turns freely, the chassis is a U90124 1B dated 10/1965. The two phantom remotes at first were a little frozen, I cleaned them out and work nicely now.

So I went ahead for the money shot.. Plugged her in and... Nothing.... Dead, not one single sign of life at all. So prelimary chechs resulted in a bad circuit breaker, So I went ahead and soldered in a 3amp 125v fuse in its place (dont have any circuit breakers on hand). Plugged it in again, viola. Got lights on the stereo. no audio on FM but I got scratching sound while adjusting volume. SO I cleaned the contacts with Deoxit and started to hear audio. After a while fussing the controls I managed to bring the Astro Sonic sound back in all it's glory.. Man does this reciever kick with those 15" woofers!

So I decided to move on to the TV. Pulled the HOT and turned the selector to the TV position..

Nothing.. Dead as well, So once again, I checked the chassis out.. There is a relay in the chassis that the other side of the circuit breaker red wire does to is dead I think.. Thats how far I got so far, has anyone ever had these relays go bad, contacts or something?

those astros can be impressive, and like you said the 15" are the way to roll. does it have horns also? any excess noise from the amp (try aux and turn the volume up, I get a noticable hiss starting abbout 50% volume with no signal.

on mine I had several bad caps, just replaced them all, easy with the pcb solder sucker iron. My hiss was bad at 1st, replaced a few driver transistors.

On more thing does your stereo light come on right away or is there a delay, mine take about 8 seconds to come on, even though the radio is playing and rec in stereo.

Actually this is my third Astro Sonic Dave, and I must say the best one yet, yes it has horns, and I can crank the volume to max on Aux and barely noticable hiss from the speakers is present. Looks like the drivers were replaced at some time, this unit looks like it had regular service done to it suprisingly. The panel light comes on right away. I did have that issue with my other Maggie combo bout a year ago and I cleaned the contacts on the remote reciever and somehow it took care of that problem along with scratchy volume issues if using the remote for click-click-click-off three level volume control to unit off.
Hey on yours when you move the selector to the TV function, does your stereo indicaor light stay on or does it turn off when the TV powers up?

i have one of those astrosonics too.the stereo will blast!very good sound from these units.the tv works well and the cabinet is really sharp.in my garage.been trying to find a home for it with no luck.have the remotes and it came from a very elaborate home in bexley.i guess those rich folks back then called up lazarus and ordered the" best one you got "ie:most expensive.although i am not a fan of the tv,the stereo s were some of the best ever.

I will check but think it is off when TV is on. Just to me sure we are talking about the same light, its the stereo indicator that has a delay when 1st turned on. You have to have it set to FM stereo, power off and been off for a few min. Then turn on using the Treble on off. the stereo comes right on but the stereo indicator takes at least 8 seconds. If I turn off and right back on, or if I just switch from another function (like TV, AM, or anything else but FM stereo to FM stereo the indicator works instantly). It like its tied to some cap that needs to charge at power on.

I think I have a decoupling issue somewhere in the radio. the lowest section of the remote does not mute, in fact if you unplug the remote it still has a low level of volume. I did not replace the filter cap, so maybe some signal is not being decoupled there in the amp section.

I don't believe any of my maggies ever muwd at the lowest section. It's just a three level volume control all depending on where you have the volume selector set at. The indicator you speak of is the backlight for the am/fm dial right? You most likely have a dirty contact as the backlight is wired to the control selection knob I believe b

Oh and does the light delay from phono back to fm/am/aux? Could be a flaky bulb socket.

no its not the backlight its the one that is driven off the MPX board and illuminates the "stereo" uses a transistor as the driver (not switched).

Oh that puppy. Yeah mine takes 5 seconds to illuminate.

Mine just has a regular AC plug from the TV that that plugs into a socket in the stereo chassis IIRC

Oh yours is a B&W model right? I think I remeber that chassis being like that, mine harnesses together all by white connectors.

The wierd thing im stumped on is that the tuner does not turn with the channel button like my other combo does. This one only is operating the phono reject.

I had a broken wire on my tuner motor that made the push switch not work. It was right un near the switch. The clicker would move it but now the switch.

Update! She works! Decent picture too but I had to bypass the reciever switch mode that operates the tv part. Not too sure what's going on yet but the remote doesn't work and the channel button won't move the tuner. So so something in the reciever is bad. Hey what does a blue glow on the side of the HOT mean? Is this a over current issue? Flyback is staying relatively cool. Focus is not the best. Probably needs a new focus tube.

I'm not knocking the maggies but the two combos that I have had just seems that the picture quality is just not up to par with zeniths and rcs's of the same era. Kinda washy and dim like. Is this normal for the magnavox's?

Actually I think the problem is in the selector switch now that im looking into it. But I might not repair it as I think Im going to build a relay into the system to turn on the TV in the AUX mode and run the sound from the TV into the AUX sor better sound quality. My question is are you supposed to pull the sound from the amp before it gets to the tuner or something?

Nevermind, im going to direct drive the AUX off the VCR's stereo output! this will be just dandy! Then im going to put a relay inline for the AUX selection to drive the TV so I can feed audio into the AUX and power the set. ESR on the filters for the reciever and AMP seem good too.

These are neat sets. I would grab a color one if it came up. I have seen a few bw ones and had to look the other way. The owners wanted what i thought was way to much for a bw combo.
I have also had terrible luck with large bw crts being dead. All but 1 in my collection are just about unusable.

Would love to see some pix of the inside of the tv and receiver.

I have coffee table looking thing with that tuner in turntable in it and it also has the delayed stereo indicator.

Yeah i'll snap off a few pics later tonight and post them.. Im going to do that mod too and see if it works.

So far here is what I got. Inside the reciever on the combo selector switch there are these rocker pan switches that operate off the fingers on the main switch, there are two, one for phono and one for the TV. The switch was smoked and a wire burned off. Since I was going to mod the unit for the reciever to operate with the TV for AUX input through a VCR I decided to crosswire the wired from the switch closed. The treble switch still shuts off the whole unit so this mod is ok for me, the only thing that sucks is if you are going to listen to a phono ar the radio, the TV will still be on. But I might just wire a bypass switch on the back of the unit for that. I have not tested tubes yet but the picture is really strong, better and better with use.
I tested the cathode current at a cool 185ma. Thats good enough for me to leave it alone. The flyback stays cool. Here is what I have so far.

Pics dont really do this unit justice and the CRT looks way better than the pics. I have to retract my previous statment, I guess magnavox's can put out a great picture!

BTW, that's a HI Lite 23v. And the phono is in great condition too. There are two phantom remotes but for some reason they dontoperate the set. Still gotta look into the remote reciever probably. Also when using the channel selector switch, all I hear is the phono reject, as the tuner channel motor wont operate, im going to test for voltage at the motor.

on mine I had a shorted transistor on the receiver, when I would put it in the remote mode, you could hear the volume relay close and stay closed. All the caps were bad as well (the electrolytics that is).

Thanks Dave, thats OTA transmission UHF. Comes out of Monerey, CA about 150 miles from here suprisingly comes in well.. Oh how I miss OTA transmission. Wow. I have ran only into one set with bad electrolytics and that was a 1964 Airline color roundie combo I had a few years ago.

That's a nice lookin' Maggie Shawn, Mine looks the exact same inside, makes me want to dig it out and get it going again. These sets have their issues but hell, they still made it 40+ years and that deserves some credit IMO. When given some TLC, and everything on the board gets resoldered they are great sets.

Yep! I know all about the dreaded resolder jobs on these Maggies, this would be technically the fifth one for me and 4 otta 5 needed major resoldering work on the chroma and horiz circuits..

Wow that is nice, I am sold on Maggies myself, I always liked Zenith/RCA/GE and never even considered maggies now you couldnt pry it out of my cold dead hands!
