Am I the only one who is suspicious of the description "colored television" versus "color television", almost certainly by someone who knows English as a second language.

That does NOT mean the post is not legit, most immigrant business owners run a fine, honest business. But on the internet, this person could be -anywhere-.

I suggest somebody search through the net for photos of CT-100s for the same image, that someone could "cut-and-paste" into the auction.

Just because someone grew up speaking English all through life doens't mean they can spell, write, or type worth a crap. If it wasn't for spell-check, I'd leave behind lots of grammatical errors!

I don't feel like this auction is bogus. We've seen lots of CT100 photos over the years. Don't think I've seen these before. The set appears to be in a warehouse, garage, or maybe storage with other goods to be sold on ebay. Most people sharing pics of a CT100 would take better pictures... so I doubt these would have been stolen off the web. I dont think anyone would post such terrible pictures.

He does show good feedback... I don't think you can make that up.

Of course, some sellers are indeed flakes... as are some buyers.

Charlie

Another thought... The serial number of the set... is it located on the rear cover, or is it inside the set? It wouldn't be a bad idea to ask the seller to post the serial numer.

I know the previous owner of that CT-100, at least I am pretty sure that it was his set. If it is, it has been documented and the CRT has gone to air.

I just put a bid, and I assume it's to air. There is a 3-digit cabinet number that Ed's list should include, if it's a known set. The "colored" grammar is typical California buffoonry thing. I hear it all the time. (No relation to a no-longer-acceptable ethnic identifier). I know the cabinet numbers of most of the ones I've owned prior to the one I have now. What's odd about it is that the description is very, VERY vague for a TV collector to have written. Maybe an ex-wife or a widow/heir is selling it? Any collector would give pics of the back, and would mention the state of the tube, etc. Also most of us would say if it has the bottom cover, or if it's ever been repaired or is virgin. Some of those are big issues that would double or kill the value.

Note to any potential bidders: My bid is under $1000, and I will not rebid. I just put it in so as not to have the seller accept a ridiculous low offer if they're unaware... I'll take it in that case ;) .

Charles-

What is significant about the bottom cover? If it was missing, is it not possible to make a suitable replacement? I will possibly bid on the set as well, since I am in California and do not have a CT-100. Thanks.

A few hours ago, I emailed the seller asking for the chassis serial number. If/when I hear from him, I'll post the results.

Here's the list of published serial numbers of the CTC2 chassis.

http://home.att.net/~pldexnis/input/CTC2_Serial_Numbers_List.htm

The cabinet numbers are less valuable for production documentation because they recycle five times with never a value higher than 999.

Also, the seller will be providing additional photos; including both sides, the rear, and the interior.

The missing bottom cover is just one of the usual CT-100 annoyances, like the cracked UHF-VHF splitter board. I suppose you could make one, and I saved two of them from a CT-100 and a 21CT55 that burned in the '88 fire. I have those someplace still, unless I let someone in need have them in the past.

I probably will drop out of the bidding, and here I say in public, I'm not going to run it into orbit. My CT-100 is nice & complete, but has a failed CRT and water damage to the 'feet' on the cabinet. It's not worth $1000+ to me to have a set that's a little better, but still with a failed tube.

Just got a reply from the seller ... guess this pretty much tells us the CRT is bad and likely to air.

Im curious how the current owner got this TV if the previous owner was a TV collector. You would think a TV collector knowing he has a CT-100 would not have sold it to an antiquer. I would think the previous owner would have sold the set on ebay with a detailed description as he knows what he has. Its odd because there is no reserve on it. Thats good and bad of course. Does anyone know the condition of the chassis? I emailed and asked for a picture of the insides and back cover. Considering the current price of the set, I'd expect some pictures.

Charlie

Good point Doug. You know an antiquer isn't going to give a whole lot of money for anything he buys. However, he will turn around to charge a whole lot for what he sells. So the previous owner couldn't have gotten much for the set by selling it to this current fella.

If I had to get rid of the set for some reason, I think I'd rather give the set to another fellow collector before selling it to a antique dealer.

11-08-2009, 10:09 AM
It was on the Inland Empire Craigslist when the former owner sold it. I don't know if the buyer came from that ad, or if it was sold to someone here, etc. He's a significant collector, and may have another CT-100, or sold this one for other reasons. Now that I know who it was, I can attest that the former owner is 100% ethical, but I don't know the present owner/seller.

Well, no matter what we think, this guy is doing what he must to make a buck. Doesn't really matter how sneaky or honest he may or may not be, he's makin a living. Hell, he's probably been reading everything we say here and likely getting a good laugh from it. Even if he wasn't aware of this site, it sure wouldn't take a lot of effort to stumble across this thread by doing a simple google search.

In addition, here's an opportunity for someone to pick up a CT100... possibly for a decent price. Even though the set doesn't work and likely has a toasted 15G, it's still an item to be proud of owning. If the set were closer, I'd probably try at it. I think anyone that lives in the region should attempt going for it. These babies don't pop up every day ya know.

Unfortunately, we don't know the history of it, and it's possible we may never find out. Not really important at this point I suppose. Once the auction is over and the new owner takes it home, that person becomes another chapter in the set's history. For now, that's all that matters.

Actually, at least part of the history of this set is known. The "previous owner" is a member here and I will leave it up to him to share it if he wishes. I would have restored this set for him had the CRT been good. I saw the set in person a few years ago and from what I remember it was complete and in good condition.

Like Steve K mentioned, some of the history of the set is known, as the previous owner is a good guy and forum member who would probably share what he knows about the set with the new owner. The current owner is also a good guy, and while he does deal in antiques, he enjoys them as much as we do, and is into everything old including his 1800's house and 1910-1940 cars.
While he does know what he has, he is certainly not out to gouge anyone with a no reserve auction and could potentially take a loss, not that I know what he has into it.

Hey Doug,

They arent going to get cheaper as time goes by, they are only going to get more expensive. At 2400 it is a good investment even with a dead crt. If you want to play, you've got to pay.

But seriously, if you want to have one in your collection, you need to bite the bullet like I did. Now I have two. It was a bit pricy but I am happy I spent the money. After you buy your first one, you will say it was worth it too. It is just hard to drop the initial bucks, but after the money is spent, it dosent hurt so bad once you have the toy in your hot little hands.

Then there is the investment aspect. It will only appreciate in value over the years. I paid less than this one for both of mine. So now I have theretical profit if I should decide to sell. And soon I hope to have rebuilt crt's in my sets too.

If you want it, you just gotta go for it.

Good luck in your quest

Charlie

Mr p***u whoever you are?

drh4683
11-10-2009, 09:02 PM
Indeed, I need to bite the bullet. This would have been the perfect one too, it looked excellent inside, very clean and the fact that the CRT was a dud didn't even bother me. Ive restored a few early colors and would like the challange of a CT-100 someday.
I was watching that set sit at $909 or whatever it was at for the past few days, but I knew it would be too good to be true for the set to end for anything near that price. I was ready to put the big bid in at the last second and then my mind flashed for a moment as I figured shipping could be another $500+and then backed off. Thats not to say that shipping costs were my main concern. Then again, I even considered driving out to california to pick it up in person and make a vacation out of it. The furthest west I ever went in my life was Omaha, NE. Vacations are something I hardly ever got to take and I've been so busy with work that me taking a vacation would be out of the question. All I see in life is my basement full of TVs or I'll be at work until late at night. I have been house hunting, so that is really my major reason for delaying the CT-100 purchase.

I hope the buyer is in the USA, but if he/she is in California, they will be paying the state a $200+ bounty for their new toy. Then, it would have been cheaper to just have paid the asking price in the ETF classified ad a couple of months ago. It was more than I felt I could afford to put into this hobby right now, but someday I hope to own a CT-100.

I'm a legal Texas resident, and the way CA sales tax works, is that you must pay it in CA for all over-the-counter sales. However, if you buy a car, you can declare Texas residency, and avoid the CA tax, but you must have a bonded shipper remove the car from the seller, and pledge to deliver it in Texas. I don't know how it works with internet sales from CA to a TX buyer. When I buy anything on the internet from a non-CA seller, and I have it sent to CA, I get charged CA tax about 1/2 the time. Probably some of that is the seller pocketing it, and some is ignorance/mistakes. I've never had to pay another state's sales tax on a CA shipment, though. I just bought a new watch band over the internet from Orange County, CA, and received it in Ventura County, CA, but paid no county tax for either county. Just the flat CA state tax. County tax jacks up the total as high as 10.75%! The base CA sales tax is 8.25%. The additional amounts are county, city, and district pollution abatement bond taxes, etc. Texas' base sales tax is 6%, but like CA, there are county & city taxes added, making my local sales tax in Dallas (technically Plano, in Collin County), 8.25%.

I would say that my room full of sets would give me more joy than that one CT100 would. Sure, it would be great to own one, and even greater to own something prewar. But you won't find me buying either on ebay. I'm just not a "high-roller". Someday, maybe, one will turn up locally at a very decent price. My eyes are open.

I assume he's talking about sales tax, which a professional seller will have to charge in Texas too.
I was indeed referring to the sales tax. The high amounts in California are more noticeable to me now because I am visiting Virginia where the sales tax is only 5 percent.
