Ended up saving this one, along with two old tube record players, from the dump. A lady called and asked if I wanted this. And, of course, I said "yes". The only thing I've done was plug it in and it's dead except for the thump of the degaussing coil. The date sticker is gone; but, I'd say it was made between '79 and '81, since I think these were the years that GE plastered "performance" on their TV's. From what I remember, these 17" AC chassis sets had great pictures; so, this one will probably be a keeper if I can get it going.

I strongly urge you to get her going, I own a 13" and 17" version of the AC chassis, both with electronic tuner, and the pictures are freakin' incredible.

I replaced a blown B+ fuse and that got it back on; but, it still has problems. The focus divider is bad, there are vertical issues, and the raster is bright with retrace lines and the G2 controls have no effect.

More progress. I found an open 270K resistor in the RGB screen control circuit. Now that I think about it, I replaced that same resistor is a 10" GE many years ago. Probably a common problem. Someone had the vertical size and centering controls out of adjustment and that is now fixed. The main problem now is the bad focus divider. I can bring the focus in; but, it drifts after it warms up and must be adjusted again. I can also hear HV hissing from the focus divider. It appears to be a common value (240 meg, tap at 40 meg). Maybe I can find one without too much trouble. The GE part number is EP14X173.

i had one of those GE performance type sets that was 10" solid-state. looked like the portacolor, but not really... Worked great but ever since i had it years ago, it would play ok for awhile, then randomly the focus would pop totally out of adjustment.. then it would pop back in. sometimes when it lost adjustment, you could power off the set for hours or days and turn it back on with it still out of focus. then sometimes it would pop back into perfect focus. I was a kid then, not knowing much about it, and it got tossed away

Is that the GE with a double-sided circuit board? If so, they had some hellacious problems with intermittents, locatable only by tedious 'poke and prod' methods. Bill(oc)

Well, I checked and I have an open bag for the focus divider, but nothing is in it. Still looking. I have a box (24x24x24") of knobs it may have fallen into, but I have to move stuff before I can access it. I'll know tomorrow.
