Today I finally got my 5 up and running. Here is what was needed to get it going: RF amp in tuner and the .01 600v in horiz osc section!
The set has all original tubes (except for the canadian marconi rf amp replacement) I managed to find an RCA one from the same era.
Even the CRT is original with nearly new emission, It has a 56-32 date code.
I went ahead and grudgingly replaced most of the coupling caps etc in the sync, vert and horiz sections anyway as they probably would be problems sooner or later.
Color is good, purity is still off somewhat after degauss but I don't intend to use it every day.
Funny, It seems that a lot of the canadian replacement tubes that I have seen from that era seem to lose their vacuum or go kaput earlier than their american counterparts, Has anyone else seen this?
My old boss at the tv shop used to call those tubes "canadian macaroni" I guess he meant the marconi brand? He used to live in Ontario so maybe he knew an inside joke?
Has anyone ever seen the plastic housing or "capacitor" for the crt on these burn holes through?
I had two of them about 15-20 years ago do this and all the digging out of the carbon and silicone fill wouldn't fix them!
I threw one out and fixed the other after a LONG search for the part. Glad the one I have now is ok:D

This is the set with the bare minimum done to it to make it work.
The picture is pretty nice, But with the crappy digital camera I have you would never know that...

Good choice--considering you had plenty of material to work with!
