View Full Version : Noise bars and faint crackling in audio

My 1958 GE has annoying noise bars which scroll up the video and some faint crackling in the audio. This is a 3 speaker set. I cleaned up the connections in the audio @ speaker points. No change. Other sets connected do not have any noise bars. Noise bars are present whether it is dvd/vcr or convertor. I hooked up a video generator and no noise bars. Now should I look into audio circuits more? I guess I am saying since the signal generator did not produce noise bars, due to its lack of audio transmission, there is nothing in the video circuit contributing? Or am I just completely confused, which is most of the time, but I am happy. Pic below,, yes the video generator needs recapped, but it generates lol

WOW!! That is some display of vertical non-linearity!

Assuming you've covered the input filter caps, etc....

As for the noise bar I'd have a look at the power supply section--paying particular attention to the condition of rectifiers and their connections--but also any power-handling connection, including the on-off switch itself.

If your set uses a rectifier tube such as a 5U4GB in my experience sometimes such a scrolling line can be eliminated temporarily by placing a "beam bender" magnet assembly on the tube and working it around.

If your set uses those dreaded finned selenium rectifiers you need to consider replacing them with silicon diodes. When seleniums "let go" they often emit an unpleasant, flatulent-smelling gas that is poisonous to breathe.

Ground fault in a series filament set can also cause problems like this....

That is the video generator that is source of the vertical problems, I just bought it and just wanted to see how it performed. The tv has been recapped and does have a very healthy crt and overall has a great video, certainly will be a watcher when I figure out the noise bars and few other problems. Never knew a power switch could cause problems like that, I will look into everything you suggested.

So when its running on the video generator , it just produces static for audio ?

Are the sound bars a constant oscillation , or do they fluctuate with the audio ?
This could be a alignment issue , bad cap , drifted resistor in the rf , if circuit .
Weak detector ?

If the bars are also in the video , I would start at the tuner and IF , before the audio amp circuit , but mainly I would be consetrating on the if and detector circuits .

Nice old dynascan , what year is yours ? , I got the same one , however , mine needs a recap worse than yours does .:D

When it is running on the video generator it produces no static, hum or nothing, even with volume turned to max, no real noise. The bars are constant, and seperate from each other @ about 50% of the screen.
The dynascan I just bought and the date on the mailing for the owners manual and stuff had a postmark date of 1973. So I am guessing it is that era.

That video genny would not produce audio--just video. But that doesn't mean that extraneous audio static cannot be heard; often there is a video buzz if the fine tuning isn't properly tweaked.

Such a source of video pattern is what was sometimes referred to as a "flying spot" video generator--comprised of a small low-persistence CRT (they have an eerie blue NTSC standard raster on them when you peek down the transparency slot!) and a photodiode tube that sits across from it in the light-tight cabinet. Transparencies with traditional test patterns are inserted in the slot at the top, and rest against the face of the CRT.

The "flying spot" that forms the tiny raster is "eclipsed" by the blackness of the image on the transparency in its travels behind it, and the phototube takes the intermittant light signal that results, and forms the video "stream" sent along with the synch signals to the modulator and RF stages.

I have two of the B&K make--IIRC, and found them very useful in TV work. Aside from the 5:AM pattern I made up numerous other dot and/or bar patterns lithographically that served well in doing linearity and convergence work on color TVs.

Is that the M4, or, M5 chassis?
These sets were suseptable to poor connections in the circuit board. Also, the I F cable from tuner often got poor connections. Usually on gound, circuit board connection, or, rarely, in the cable itself.
These sets tended to be troublesome, so, be careful.
They eat electrolytics, and, flybacks alot.

Thanks guys for all the tips, I have not found anything to state what chassis it actually is. That info appears to be gone. I am in the middle of car show season and looks like I wont get to it until a rainy weekend, or colder weather.

Well I replaced an electrolytic in the audio and my crackling is gone, now to find the source of the noise bars.

Found a wax cap on the power switch that I had not noticed before. It is bad, dont have a replacement, but just ordered some caps. See if that is indeed the problem with the noise bars. Did some inspecting and continuity in the tuner circuit, nothing remarkable to report. This is my excuse for hanging out inside the house and ignoring the outside hot weather chores that I am putting off:D
