My latest acquisition, a Turner TV-1. Gave it a new power cord and electrolytic cap and it seems to power up, has a rather nice looking cabinet to it. Uses a single 12AT7.

Question is, what can I use this for in this day and age?

You might be able to use it as a signal booster to improve the digital-only reception we have now. But--unless it does a clean job of it--I strongly doubt it will work.

You may have isolated the true obsolete bit of electronics here; old TVs can use converters, VCRs, DVD units, DVR, units, etc, etc... And not need a booster a-tall!

BTW, these boosters in my memory never did much except to give the snowy picture more contrast in most cases.

In some cases it may work....But I'm not reaching for my wallet on it...sorry to say....

I'd love to hear where one of you used one of these antique boosters successfully to gain a digital station you were not able to get before.

Boosters like these will only be useful for the VHF digital stations...what few there are. The rest are UHF and beyond the tuning of most boosters.

I should mention that this unit contains a Mallory Inductuner, I almost wonder if the tuned output could be somehow converted to AM for a radio, as it seems to be able to pull in the standard FM broadcast. Any ideas?

Better for us, as UHF antennas are for the most part much more compact, and easier to erect and manage. OK with me; I'm there. :thmbsp:

On a related note, I have a like-new UHF tuner that I wish I had used a little more often before the digital switchover. The only problem is that there was nothing worth watching on those channels :)

Old boosters and UHF tuners were already cheap. I guess their value is now zero except as curiosities or decorations.

They shrunk down the UHF band for resale, channels 51-69 are no more.
