I'm not happy.

I just turned on my 1981 RCA XL-100 25" console to watch Corner Gas, and it's doing fine for a few minutes, when all of a sudden, it makes a short buzzing sound, and shuts off.

I unplugged it because it's making a burning smell.

What the hell?

Now I gotta get the fucker out of the basement, and it was not an easy task getting it down here. Getting it up will be less enjoyable.

Well I opened up the back, replaced the fuse with an equal one. Plugged it in, and all i got was that buzzing sound again, and the fuse blew. Anyone know what might be going on?

The CRT was really going bad on this thing anyway, and I got it for free, and I do have a spare 19 incher sitting around, so im not really upset about it.

Many of the early '80's RCA's would have loose connections on and around the horizontal driver transformer, causing them to shutdown and buzz. Maybe you'll get lucky and this will be the case with yours.

Oh, we're blowing fuses. This could be caused by:

1. Shorted rectifier diodes in the power supply
2. Shorted filter cap
3. Shorted HOT
4. Shorted retrace cap in the HOT circuit
5. Bad flyback (likely took the HOT with it).
