I just picked up this Crosley 9-407 TV. Made in 1948. I found it on Craigs List here in New York.

I haven't had a chance to look it over yet. It's in my garage. Someone mounted a tube on the side of the high voltage cage. I want to find out what that is all about.

Looks like some sort of add-on "soft-start" ballast resistor/lamp to reduce inrush surges when the power is switched on. When the lamp heats up, there's probably a bimetallic strip inside that acts as a relay to short out the lamp portion.

There were some simpler variants of this concept (involving a regular sand-type power resistor) that were available in the 50's/60's era.

I've got one of those sets. Drove out to Pittsburg to get it about 12hr round trip. Price was right and it's my first one with a continious tuner.

I have one also, it was given to me free but it's pretty rough.
It does work after a recap though.

A Crosley 9-407 was my first antique TV, and I later sold it. That was well before I knew anything much about repairing or restoring old sets. I'd like to find one out here on the west coast now.

Could it be the damper tube? I have seen them mounted bouth inside and outside of a H.V. cage. That cage looks pretty small, as does the set, and space utilization would have been the "name of the game." Is it listed on the sets tube chart?

If you look closely you can see a coiled filament running between the two posts at the top of the tube. Whatever it is, it's not likely to be a damper tube.

I think the soft start suggestion makes the most sense.

Gosh John, your right. I hadn't expanded the image for a close look. The tube's engineering looks more like a light bulb than anything.
