Well, I started a thread as we will be prepared to see mountains of vintage analog TVs piling near trash. Post what you found...

I was at my local Best Buy today, and my jaws dropped after finding more than 120 customers crowding in at the HDTV section. The customer service desk had more than 50 unwanted analog TVs ready for recycling.

I am attending a ham radio/electronics flea market tomorrow morning (Saturday, June 13). I will see what goes on there with old TV sets.

Did those people seriously wait this long to get a DTV tuner? What morons. And then to throw out perfectly good TVs when any person with even a little bit of intelligence knows they'll still work, with cable, or a DTV tuner.

I can't wait to see what happens here in 2011. I'll go to future shop to look at all the morons lol

In fact, there's people who think Canada has switched to digital as well. Idiots.

I don't claim to be the smartest guy in the world but I can pay attention to the damn constant adverts. Compared to them, I'm a fuckin genious.

No, no, no...Let the Great Unwashed keep thinkin' their tellies are ALL kaput...Then WE can cabbage on some great deals...I might even be able to score an Indextron, or maybe another CT-101 or something equally as good...ALWAYS take full & unfair advantage at the expense of others...Especially when they're IDIOTS & basically deserve to be skinned in the 1st place...Mbwahahahahahaha...

They reported on the 6 PM news that within an hour of the analog shutdown, people were flooding Best Buy to purchase new DTV's and DTV converters. So, I'm sure there will be plenty of good analog TV's kicked to the curb because people don't want to mess with a box.

That is the way I look at it. :D I have a CRT TV. Works great with a converter box and rabbit ears. If that set goes, I will get another CRT used for cheap.

I had to rush down to the San Fernando Valley (north Los Angeles at 7:00 this morning, and I saw two big projection TVs lying along the road... They weren't there yesterday. I'm going to be out again later today, so I'll keep my eyes open. What astounded me, is that I went to Walmart last night to buy some rabbit ears, and the clerk (a guy about 18) asked ME when the TV was going to change!!!!! I politely answered "tonight", and I sure hope he was kidding. If an 18-year-old Los Angeles resident didn't truly know as of last night, Heaven help the over-80 crowd in Montana!

I rarely actually see things sitting on curbs in this area. At the flea market this morning, I only saw a couple of TVs at all, and one tuner in its box. At Fry's on the way home, there were pallets of Channel Master tuners (one of the good ones) for sale, and surprisingly not a crowd of people buying them.

Every yard sale I went to today had at least one BPC TV set sitting on a table for about $10 or so...

Passed on a Zenith b&w 19" early sixties tube over speaker upright this morning. Feeling a little guilty as it just poured like a mofo here. Anybody wants it let me know and I'll go rescue it.

Did pick a Zenith (prol. LG :( ) PTV a few hours ago. Free. Maybe 52". One of the newer thinner ones. This might be a renaissance of the trash to heating oil market I had going a few years ago on the tail end of the CRT days.

There was a nice RCA XL-100 console at a yard sale for 5 bucks. Early varactor tuner with the selector knob.

All I found in the thrift stores of the northern Atlanta suburbs were a slew of (mostly) Chinese BPC sets, all working and all generally under $15.

There was one 1981 Sears set with the mechanical pushbutton tuning that had a strong CRT at least (no way to see a picture on it anymore.)

I have been digging TV's out of the trash for many months now, most of which work fine!!
I have only been picking up the ones that look nicest, IE Flat-tube etc and if it doesnt work out it goes!

I have only bought TWO Tvs in the last 20 years....One used Sony Triintron circia 1985 and most recently a 2007 Trinitron to replace old one. (Giving old one to neighbor)

I have TEN Tvs now!!! All work great!!

Gotta love dumpster diving!!

I stopped in the Salvation Army store Saturday-they were having a sale, all TV sets $5 each. Some were tempting-they have an early 80s RCA 13" color (knob tune) and same thing in a Zenith, plus GE & RCA 12" bw sets, a hefty 25" RCA table model from the mid-80s, more. But none of it really interests me. Note: most all of those sets were sitting there the last time I stopped in, over a month ago. I was the only one looking...I did grab something, though: an old RCA cartridge audio tape recorder (the kind that uses the giant cassette.) I'd been looking for one for years, and this one, basically working, was on sale for $1.50. That'll keep me coming back!

Neighbor tossed out a Sony Trinitron KV-1510. I figured what the hell and grabbed it. It comes on and I could see a faint image and hear Spanish spoken. That was in the basement with no converter box or antenna.

Last Friday night , as the DTV mandate took effect, I received a call from a friend, that his town was having it's "clean up day" on Saturday morning. He told me there were a number of modern tv sets, a few projos, and such--NONE of which I really cared about. BUT--there was ALSO a 17" or 19" RCA 1975 model color set--looks like a ctc--72, that I DID want--AND--he saw a " big RCA console tv with doors", that looked to HIM like a CTC-38 or 39. I figured it would be a CTC-40, and asked him if he could go back....and check for these "magic words" on the set--"Trans vista color" --which WOULD DEFINITELY indicate a ctc 40(I THOUGHT.) He looked again...and it DID say TVC, and had the "bar switch" on it. With that...I jumped in the van...and headed out, at about 11PM. A LONG traffic jam, with some road construction made me THINK--"man....maybe this is NOT worth it. I have a swap meet to go to on Saturday morning..maybe I should go home. But ..I did NOT go home...and got there, and we went over to get the set. First...I picked up the CTC-72--without ANY second thoughts. Then...we got to the "CTC 40". I took a QUICK look in the back, to make sure WAS a 40, and not a 38...and THEN I SAW IT!! THE HV QUAD!! This was NOT a ctc-40...but a MUCH more rare CTC--44, that is a LOT like the 40--BUT with SS hv, instead of a tube!! I could NOT believe it!! The last 44 I got, I had to drive for a LONG way..and here was one only about 20 miles from me--in a VERY nice cabinet!! Had I allowed a nice CTC-44, with doors, that was ALMOST in my back yard, to get crushed, and found out , I know I would have cried...,.but alas--I HAVE it now. The ctc-44 was only made for one year, 1971, and it was a HIGH END set. It was replaced by the CTC-46 and 54 for 1972, as RCA went to modular sets

It is still in my van, with the 72. I have not had time to look much at it...but it IS safe and sound now, after almost going to the crusher truck and then to the dump....saved by a few hours.

BTW--I have NOT been here much in recent times. Several deaths in my family, MAJOR job problems, (causing) money problems...etc...etc..

That was a nice save and it probably won't take much to get it going. You're lucky that you were to get that set from the waste pile. Around here, no "trash picking" is allowed and they have people watching to make sure it does not happen. I just spent $20 on a newspaper wanted ad for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in an effort to get old TVs from the '50's, '60's, and early '70's. I can only hope that it does some good and I don't get a bunch of people wanting to sell me their '80's goldstars and '00's Broksonics. Anyway, keep us posted on the 44.

Why would trash picking be illegal? Anything that could be saved from the trash and repaired and reused you think would be a desireable alternative. What ever happened to Yankee Frugality?

radiotvnut
06-17-2009, 12:03 PM
I need to clarify that the "trash picking" is only illegal at the county dumpsters and the city recycling drop off days. AFAIK, It's OK to pick up something from in front of someone's house. I've heard of a few people that got tickets for fishing something out of a dumpster. And, yes, they now have law enforcement officers hiding in the bushes to catch offenders. Sort of reminds me of Dukes of Hazzard cops that don't have anything better to do. It seems to me that there are a lot more pressing problems than someone pulling something out of the dumpster or throwing something in the dumpster that the authorities consider "non household garbage".

I still pick up things from the side of the road if I see them; however, I no longer ask the owner if it's OK. I did that once when I saw a late '60's Magnavox color console on the curb. The old bag that owned it suddenly decided it was worth MONEY when I told her I could use it for parts. I offered her $5, which she declined. My new rule is, "If it's on the curb, it's fair game".

zenith2134
06-17-2009, 02:22 PM
If it's out for trash I can take it. Some homeowners are just plain stingy/greedy though...as radiotvnut points out...

rca2000

I need to cairfy something too....

This WAS in front of someone's house. The "clean up" is one where residents put out pretty much ANYTHING, and Rumpke sends out some of its larger rear-loaders and extra help. Those bigger RL packers could probably crush a CAR, if one could get one into the hopper!! Some of them have 3 inch cylinders on the packer. I once saw one EASILY devour a COMMERCIAL stainless-steel freezer a few years ago...with NO problems at ALL!!

Around here,Clean-ups are like that. And a LOT of people "shop", during those clean-ups. One, recently in April in Wyoming, a small, rich area about 15 minutes from my job, Had a clean--up, and I picked up a 1961 TUBE console Zenith stereo, with P-P 6bq5 amps and reverb I think. , and a 63 or 64 Philco CONSOLE BW tv. I had to leave a CTC-46, as it was raining harder, I had no room for it and would have had to go back to unload my van, and come back, and it was an ugly cabinet anyway, with long, flimsy legs. 46's are NOT that rare around here anyway (EXCEPT for the table model ones..) I ALSO stripped the amp out of a 1960 or so RCA combo, BEFORE I went home to get my van, and the amp had SIX 6bq5 tubes. I sold it at the hamfest last month.

As for the cops...In Wyoming, I KNOW they MUST have known what was "going on" as there were a LOT of people--men, women, children and GROUPS of all of them--"shopping" at about midnight on that Friday. I KNOW the cops saw me , and did NOT care. In MT healthy, however it IS a TOTALLY different story....

Unfortunately.. Last Friday night in Monroe..there were a couple of OTHER things I had to leave. One, was a modern projo set,, a BIG Hitachi, that would NOT have likely fit in my van(but a COUPLE of other modern BSTV sets had alrerady been "shopped", according to my friend...so that one may have been saved too, before the crusher trucks came..), and a late "60's model GE console stereo. It was a SS one, BUT it had a nice little amp, with nice sinks on TO-3 outs and Porta--FI. I wanted to "strip it" and at least save the amp, but Greg was getting paranoid, as it was after 1AM already, and BOTH of us had to go to the swap meet in Miamisburg the next morning. So..regrettably...I let it get buried...But I DID save the 44 and the 72.

My brother the lawyer advises me that something set out for the trash is still the property of the owner/trasher along with their intentions for its disposal.

Most people are glad when someone picks up their discarded bulky waste. A year or so ago, I picked up a fairly new Sanyo TV with a broken RF connector. The owner returned home just as I was loading the TV and he expressed his appreciation for me taking it and said I'd have a good TV if I could fix the RF connector.

Then, you've got people (like that woman I mentioned above) that get greedy and can't stand for someone to actually get some good out of their garbage. Had I gone back to her house about midnight, that set would have probably still been there. It would have been funny if she'd called the police saying, "there's some guy out here stealing my trash".

Its the same here in Waynesboro, VA and surroundiong area's. The area was too fringe to pick up a satisfactory analog signal, no less digital.

In Chesterfield, VA where i live part time..all i've seen was BPC set's at the curb. No 80's set's or earlier but have found several tube sets on Craigslist and at one thrift that i shop at regularly.

For some reason, it's all Projection sets being tossed here in Norfolk - I saw three in a 2 mile radius today. Old Hitachi, a Zenith, and from the back, a Sony. The copper scrappers beat me to most sets, and I don't have room for a projection set, so I've passed on every curbside set since August 2007.

The last few "free pickup of old TVs" ad's that I placed in the paper yielded many calls from people wanting to give me older big screen TVs. I now state "no projection (big screen) TV's" in my wanted ads. I don't have the room or a way to haul them and I don't want to have to keep the things going from now on after I sell one.

I dropped $8 on an LXI (Sears house brand) 5" AC/DC color set, I'm guessing circa 1985, has a nice color picture and AV inputs.

I'm hoping to kludge it with a CECB for portable DTV use (as I already have done with a 5" B/W set), but have hit some stumbling blocks:

There is no place on the set for batteries - my assumption is that it was made with car power in mind.

I only have the AC cord for it - and the DC cord input seems to have THREE conductors (what in the world would the third line be for?).

And finally, the model number plate is missing, so I can't research how to adapt to these problems!

I'll try to post some pics soon.

Well, got my first call from the ad. You guessed it, an older lady trying to sell me 3 BPC sets. I asked her how old they were and all she could tell me was that they had a little age on them. I then asked if they used knobs or buttons for channel changing. She said that she thought they used buttons. I was not satisfied that her TV's were old enough; so, I thanked her for her time and hung up. You'd think that older people would know that a TV with buttons is not likely going to be from the '50's or '60's.

While walking around today I found a 25" RCA made in 2000 without A/V jacks, I saw no reason to take it so I left it. I think a lot of people in my area either got the converter box, gave away there TV or sent them to the recycling center because I'm not finding a lot of curbside finds.

One thing I find weird is that a lot of the stores I went to are out of indoor antennas, I hope people aren't buying them just because they have "DTV Ready" on the box. Even the dollor stores are out of antennas!

From the video that I saw, these people cleaned up nothing. Just as bad is that it was in the Pacific Northwest(not the desert) where the rain, etc would quickly disperse the well beyond the original disposal site.

(I am not saying that the desert is any less succeptable to enviromental damage, just that there is usually more time to prevent the spread of it).

One misunderstanding that I have ran about the lead contents of TVs is that some think that all TV CRTs contain lead. As there are no shadow masks, hence very little X-RAY generation, black and white CRTS do not contain lead(except for any soldier joints). It is the color CRTS that have the leaded glass, with monitor CRTs containing the most.

Of course, the old black and white TVs had plenty of lead based soldier contained in the chassis resulting in a still high pollution potential.

First BPC set I've seen around here in Bellevue is a 19 inch TV/VCR unit by Panasonic.

Said TV set disappeared before Sunday afternoon, and trash pickup is usually Monday morning. Maybe someone decided they could use it, if it works. I passed on it myself.

Here in Kingsport, TN looks like someone (motel maybe) is clearing out several early 80's RCA and some others I can't identify. These will be at auction on June 29 after 3PM.

http://auctiontimegallery.com/images/IMG_9172.jpg

Across town at "Old Tyme Auction" I saw a couple of old radios and some boxes of very old vacuum tubes while dropping of some non-electronic estate items. One of the radios was a 1929 Radiola 66 and the other was a pre-WWII Philco console. There were two carton of tubes in boxes ("Standard Tube" label) and some of these were the pre-octel 4-6 pin monsters such as the 80 and 6A7. Might be good find for a restorer in this area. The tubes will be in the noon auction on June 30 and the radios will go in the evening auction after 5:30PM.

Those RCA's look to be from the mid-late '80's. I remember the older late '70's-early '80's RCA's that had the regular VHF/UHF tuner and an AM/FM radio. There was a local flop house motel that was still using these at least up into the mid '90's. I know because they asked me to repair the broken ones at about $10 a set if I came and picked them up from the motel. Nope, don't think so, LOL!

Well i was going to post a picture, but photobuckets being odd to me. My mom asked me to drop by the church (shes organizing a rummage sale) and toss a "really old" donated tv into the trash for her. So of course i headed right out.

Turns out that "really old" set is a wood grained 1991 panasonic 20"? color set with remote and after market bunny ears. Digital tuning, but everything works fine.

As my '84 magnavox console has just decided to die on me.. Ive this girl sitting up on top of her for the time being.

Grimer, you do as good as anyone at finding things!

I was given a CTC-140 console (as mentioned in another thread) it was pretty rough looking with a bubbling fake finish, the insides loaded with mouse droppings. Since I couldn't fix it in 5 minutes or less, I parted it out.

A friend has a 36" BPC sitting his porch, says it has "no yellow". I told him I will make it dissappear for him if he helps load it on my truck. If it isn't a solder joint or something equally simple, well, another will bite the dust.

My uncle called me earlier in the week and asked if I wanted his old TV. It's an RCA console he bought in the early 80s; I remember it well. Prior to that he had a rectangular Admiral from the 60s. One day the circuit breaker popped and he decided it was the last straw, and went shopping. I can recall at the time he said he carefully examined RCA, GE, Zenith & Magnavox and decided this was the best. (I also recall him saying that the Zenith was so poorly put together that you could look in the back of the cabinet and see out the front through the cracks) Yeah, he was probably paying more attention to the cabinets than the electronics. The Admiral still played okay and was relegated to the back room. I liked to sneak in and watch it...I really need to confirm that it got junked long ago. (that has been my assumption) It would be great to learn that it is actually in his barn, but I doubt it. Anyway, a few years back my aunt won a new TV in a contest and the RCA got put in the back room itself. I'll probably ride out there and get it before the weekend, and attempt to give it away. There are some happy memories associated with it; I recall when it was brand new being over there for a New Years Eve party. Everyone was gathered around watching Dick Clark. I snuck in the other room and watched CBS & NBC on the Admiral. Johnny Carson said he would have the ball drop at midnight; knowing he was on tape I thought this must be something special so I went in the living room at a few minutes to midnight and, against the protests of the others there, swithced the channel. Turns out Johnny did this fake thing with an apple on a skewer, sitting on his desk. I really got yelled at, and quickly switched back to ABC in time to see the confetti fly. Memories...but not enough for me to keep the RCA myself, I don't think!

Philco-Ford had some very up-to-date styling in the 70s, but lackluster electronics from what I've seen. Somewhere out there in "googleland" is an article on a 19" hybrid color set that someone found. To look at it, any of us would peg it as very late 70s, maybe early 80s-yet it was actually from around '74 and with tubes.

Found a 19" GE CTC175L2 stereo TV made in August 1995.

I was going to steal its buttons to put into my RCA CTC187, but the ones in the 175 are angled differently. They'd fit on the 187's board, but I'd never be able to press them.

A quick power on shows a bright screen, static looks good, well as good as static will look. Needs a slight focus adjustment, but since the flyback controls are exposed, that might not even be due to its age.

Since I can't use its buttons, and already have several Thomson chassis, and since this TV is only a 19 inch one, I think I'll hang onto it just in case.

EDIT: Just looked at the degaussing thermistor, and yep, the only thing holding it in place are the leads it connects to. Time to solder in a new one, and what is it with Thomson sets and their degaussing thermistors?

The computer I use at work is provided to me by a vendor. They don't give me any more than they have to-I really thought I would get an LCD monitor when they replaced it a couple years ago, but no, just an AOC crt. It would act up every so often and last week I turned it on to find the whole raster compressed into something the size of a Hershey's bar (on its side!) I didn't want to put any time into something that isn't even mine, so I beat on it quite a bit with a wrench. When that didn't work I called my vendor. He sent me one that was sitting around in the store, a sad little monitor from '95. Completely worn out-the only way to get enough focus to be able to read anything was to crank both contrast and brightness all the way down. The longer it stayed on the worse it got. So, I posted a want-ad on freecycle and found the Compaq monitor I'm using now. I like that it's made in Korea, unlike the others which were Chinese wonders. It does have an intermittent-possibly shorting HV? In the meantime my wife found another Compaq crt monitor on the curb. My vendor did say he would reimburse me for the cost of a new one but I find that wasteful, considering all the useable old ones out there.

I let a few things follow me home this week, things I neither needed or really wanted.

First, via Freecycle, a Sears SR series 19" from '86. Sanyo built, supposed to work with intermittent color. I don't know why I bother with stuff like this! The other day we were talking on here about plastic cabinets that go bad. Well, I went to move this one and a big chunk of the cabinet back broke, making it even less desirable!

I mentioned my recent discovery of an unmanned used electronics recycling dropoff. I've decided I must make a trip a week out there, just to make sure nothing good is being left. This week I stopped by with some junk parts I had been saving up, and nearly dropped that Sears set off as well. While I was there I looked around...found one drawer of a Sprague capacitor cabinet with a few NOS ceramic caps still in it. Among the many VCRs, one stood out: '86 Monkey Wards, 4-head mono, nice and heavy. I thought it was a Sanyo but when I pulled the cover I saw it is a Sharp. Tape was stuck in it...has typical rubber problems, especially a glazed/crazed tire. If anybody wanted it I would gladly give it to them for cost of shipping.

Last, I saw a couple 5" portables. One was one of those "Bentley" sets from the late 80s. This one was quite clean so I took it. Powered it up at home with my bench supply and it appears to work just fine. (I didn't bother hooking up the converter box) Same deal applies, if anybody wants it, let me know.

I wonder with that flaky cabinet one what it would be like to throw it into something else. I know it seems kind of pointless but I hate to see waste of something not far from serviceable. Just be warned that the CRT is probably bad. It will either be weak, shorted, or both. When these CRT's short; the power supply usually goes with it. My advice would be to attach a power cord and hit the power button. If it works properly, you're lucky. If not, you'd be better off to put it back on the pile. Not trying to be a smart@$$, just trying to save you some grief. Over the years, I've hauled truckloads of these sets home and most had a bad tube. The only way I was ever able to save one was to find an older tube to retrofit in the cabinet.

Well,I could not resist the urge to trash hunt, and good thing too! I found
a 19 in GE Insta Color this morning,it looked like the average early 80's solid
state set.Without being able to see through the small vents in the back I was
able to determine it was a tube set, first:no "Solid State" state script on the
front,2nd:the power cord has the safety interlock on the back,3rd:what
I thought was a service switch on the back was really an "instant on" switch, and
when I lifted the set into my truck just the weight alone was enough to
convince me it was a toob set :thmbsp: I will have to let it dry out
before I can power it up,twas raining quite a bit here.
So this month I have found 2 Sony kv1922's,1 Sony 1212,a Philco/Ford tube
B&W,and others,99% had thier built in antenna's hooked up,and all have worked.
I'm sure they all were backup or spare sets, all trashed due to the digital switchover.
Here is a crappy pic of the GE and a no-name 32' flat panel I found too.

99% of the TV's that me and my flea market friend see at the dump have had the CRT bashed and the yoke robbed. Around here, you pretty much have to be at the dump when the TV arrives because these "copper grabbers" do nothing but make the rounds all day. I think the most upsetting case was when a friend called to say there was a nice '50's Zenith B&W console at the dump. I tried to get him to save it; but, it was too heavy for him. So, about 30 minutes later, I made it to the dump; only to find a busted up mess. The only thing left was the cabinet and a bunch of busted glass. Now, I'd just rather not know about a TV at the dump unless it's already been saved. This junk of "there's a TV at the dump but I can't get it" is for the birds because there is a 99.9% chance the TV will be smashed by the time I get to it.

Instead, you'll need to take your electronic waste to a recycling event.
Sooo.....Until the New Year, I will be expecting to be in direct competition with the 'scrap-vans' to find the VERY LAST of the vintage TV and audio gear. If there is one final burst of stuff, as people get ready for the January 1st ban.

For a while I saved the yokes from TVs and monitors I was parting out, but when I took them in they didn't bring much. From memory it was less than the rate for motors and transformers. To get more I'd have to separate out just the copper wire from all the other material.

I've often wondered if when the copper scabs aren't making their round are they sitting down unwinding all their yokes and transformers? Even at the higher rate for clean copper wire I wouldn't have thought it would be worth the time. I guess there are worse ways to make money though.
