Hello! I bought a General TP-14HU 14" B/W TV set this afternoon. It looks like one of those "space-age" sets. I'd like to find some info like about when it's made. Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks!

Welcome to AK! Can you post a pic of yr new Pride & Joy? Is it a General ELECTRIC set? Metal, plastic, bakelite? Does it work-if not, DON'T plug it in & turn it on !! If it doesn't work, don't worry too much. If you are electronically talented, several guys here can help you get it going. Is this a British set, 625 line standard? It doesn't appear to be U.S. as it only tunes in UHF.

GENERAL is the brand of "YAOU Electric Co. LTD" in Japan.
I think this set was made in middle of '70s.

Tain't a Murrican set, that's fer shure. But yeah, think it's mid-late '70s. Got that late 70s-disco-era look to it.-Sandy G.

If it doesn't work, its not worth very much. If it does, well, I got an excellent working 8" GE color set last weekend for a whole 10 bucks. In other words, its not worth a whole lot. But that's Ok-its clean & makes a nice display piece. If it works, all the better-you can show it off to yr friends. If you have a niece, nephew, kid brother who's keen on electronics, it might make a good birthday/Christmas present. Or just keep it & enjoy it ! Nothing wrong w/that !! A set like that probably sold for 75-100 bucks-maybe- back in the day when it was new. Color sets were still fairly expensive then, a lot of these guys were used as bedroom sets. I was in college in the late '70s, you saw many, many similar sets in dorm rooms then. -Sandy G.

just because it is made in japan doesnt mean its not european.
lots of sets were made in japan for export to other places.
and folks in military service send home some odd stuff.
i live near wpafb and lots of oddball sets come in for service.
lots of multistandard stuff.
not sure which standard is used in china.
willing to bet that set is for the european market and is pal

I'm not sure if it's made in Japan as there is no text like "Made in Japan" or "Manufactured in Japan" on the set. The word "Japan" is just printed after the company name. Maybe it's for the European market. But at least I know it's distributed in Hong Kong as there is a Hong Kong distributor label attached to it. Anyway, you're right that it's definitely in PAL as I can only watch TV programmes or videos in the system. FYI, China uses the system.

Here I have a question: Why does the picture move a little like waves when the TV receives some channels but not the others? Is this related to the signal?

probably just interference or agc a bit high.
if it were filter caps it would do it on all channels.
