Hey guys.

I'm getting ready to replace the kine in my 27" Sony TV that I bought new in 1993. The red gun has been blooming for about 3 years now, and it has started getting worse in the last few weeks. Now, the grey scale drifts allover the place from blue to green.

I have a junked Sony of the same model that I got when it was 2 years old. It was struck by lightning and blew a hole in the IF board and blew the shields off of the tuner. I assumed that the lightning ran in on the cable...

I tested the kine, and it tested 100% on the B&K tester that I had at the time.

I no longer have much test equipment. The parts set has been sitting in a storage shed all these years. I'm concerned about the tube going gassy from sitting. Am I being overly cautious?

Would it be a good idea if I run the filaments for awhile before I install it in the set?

Its been alot of years since I've replaced a tube. At least, I wont have to do much alignment on it. Same yolk, magnets glued in place, etc...

I don't think a CRT of that age would go gassy from sitting, unless maybe it was subjected to extreme temperature swings or other abuse.

One thing I don't understand: Don't Sonys of this vintage simply blank the raster if the AKB circuit senses an imbalance?

I didnt include that part. The blinking has gotten worse, too. Sometimes, it will blink for 30-45 seconds before it will stay on.

The storage building is not heated. The parts set has not been moved at all since I got it. Getting to it in the shed will be like hunting for treasure. Theres alot of TV stuff in there between the doorway and the wall where the set resides.

I'd go ahead and swap the tubes. I've done many, many of those, and all you'll have to do is set the gray scale if the yoke is the same plug. There's a focus pot on the flyback, and the G2 control is on the CRT board. In a 27TS32, I think all the setup adjustments are in the service menu, if it's the chassis I'm thinking of. BTW: If one of them uses an early type A68JMT50X, and the other is an A68KZJ50X, you'll have to either omit or keep the X-ray shield. The KZJ has it internally, while the JMT uses an external one. The setup procedure is easy if you have the manal. I may have one, or if someone else does, you should read over it. And don't forget to press MUTE - ENTER on the remote to save your settings. I've done the setup on those sets plenty of times, and had to re-do it when forgetting to save.

First, Sandy, THANKS for the care package. I got it last night. The kine is alot better than the one in my set. The on-screen display is more sensitive than the one in mine, and the lights are working!!!

Now, back to the current thread:

kx250rider: I've always had a bad habit of purchasing a service manual for sets that I own. It took some time to find it, but it was used today. I've tweeked the alignments in my set a bit over the years, and today I tweeked the vert. size and Hz width and centering a little. I didnt touch any of the grey scale alignments. It wasn't worth the work. A B/W picture looks great again. I let it run for about 3 hours and adjusted the focus, Hz stat on the CRT board, replaced a 4.7 mfd cap on the CRT board because it looked like it had gotten warm. Also, the blinking has ceased. YAY!

While I had the chassis out, I looked it over for bad solder connections and found several around the horizontal drive transformer, and flyback area. Resoldering fixed an intermittent width problem. Pic would bounce from time to time. I put it back together about an hour ago, hoisted it back into the entertainment center cabinet, and thats where it sits. I'm going to rest for awhile before I pull the cabinet away from the wall and hook the set back into the system.

I'm really glad I saved the parts set now.

Now that it has been running for a week, I have noticed that there is a slight purity problem in the upper left corner. The more I think about it, I remember seeing this tube in the other set, before the lightning, with a slight discoloration in the same corner. I degaussed the set, but the splotch is still there. Its going to stay there until I have a reason to pull it back out of the cabinet again.

This set is terribly un-fun to move.

Other than this little setback, the set looks absolutely great. Its nice to see good color again...

Sony liked to glue small magents to the CRT bell to fix corner purity errors. Often, moving, adding, or even removing some of the magnets will improve the purity.


Yeah. I removed several magnets from another tube that I had just before I snipped its nipple with a pair of pliers on Sunday.

Think how much FUN it was for me, as a Sears tech back in the day, to replace a warranty Sony tube without the replacement magnets? I carried 2 sided tape for such occasions.

Sears had a good tube rebuilder back then... around 1990. I rarely had problems with convergence or purity.

Over the last 20 years or so, Sears out of Atlanta had by far the best Big Screen TV repairmen of all within 300 miles of East Tennessee. That also goes for Data Projectors and Plasma sets. Those guys are truly old school pros. :tresbon:
