Just got this thing for a good price off of craigslist. Picture looks great and no real problems. My only question is regarding the really loud sound it makes on power up, makes kind of a loud buzz? I have heard most tube tvs make this sound but this is pretty loud.
Is this a function of age? Or something I should investigate further.
Oddly enough, I bought it with matching stand for $300 and this was one of the TV's I had always wanted when they were new (2004).

It's probably the degaussing coil. If so, I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen plenty of TV's that had loud degaussing action. Even sets as far back as the '60's.

My 19" RCA CTC185 XL-100 color set also makes a very noticeable "thud" sound when switched on. It is indeed the degaussing circuit--they all make this noise at power on, and as the previous poster noted, it is no cause for alarm. If the buzz were caused by the set's power supply (bad caps) or vibrating laminations in a transformer (for instance), you would hear it all the time. As long as the set works, I'd just ignore the noise.

Thanks guys, yes it is only during power up and no other issues. I haven't had a tube TV this big for years... so I forgot what they sound like!
It is a very nice TV though, beats a cheap entry level plasma (except for size and the 220lb curb weight).

Agreeing with the others; it's normal. We have two 36" WEGAs, and a 40" WEGA. The 40" sounds like hitting an old galvanized metal trash can with a hammer when the degaussing coil fires.

We carried that 40" model when I worked at tweeter, what a badass TV..
Thanks Charles, your description was pretty accurate! lol
