I got this VCR at a thrift. It was marked as working, and had the remote with it. Its got HI-FI sound, too!

Got it home, plugged it in. Powered up. Thats usually a good sign. Using the remote, I pressed power. The unit came to life! Great! For about 3 seconds, then it shut off. Press power again, fires up, cuts off.

I unplugged one of the two flat cables that go to the front panel display and buttons, and the VCR will power up and stay on.

After I got it apart, I found one cap on the power supply module that had the plastic cooked off of it, and replaced it. Still doing the same thing.

When I started looking closer, I found the main drive belt from the capstan motor to the cassette drive was mush. Replaced the belt, and noticed that the timing switch was loose and not meshed to the gear on the cam.

I can manually lower the cassette tray and get nothing from the tray motor. Nothing. The motor is good, however. I applied DC direct, and it operated the mechanism. I used a pen cap and covered the cassette sensors to fool it into thinking it has a tape in it. No dice. When the cassette tray is down, I get a moment of movement from the head motor, then it stops.

I'd like to get this old girl running again. It looks like it is brand new.

Can anybody help here? I did TV/VCR work for years, but rarely worked on anything Mitsubishi.

I dont have a scope anymore. I do have a digital meter, though.

I do think that the timing switch is out of time. I dont know where the start point is for it, so I cant do much, yet.

Thank you for looking.
