For anyone who hasn't seen the trailer #3. The music to me is perfect and it's an amazing set up for hopefully a really amazing movie.
Mark
pioneervato 03-12-2009, 09:35 PM I am looking forward to the new movie. If it lives up to the trailers we should be in for some thrilling entertainment.
wajobu 03-12-2009, 09:37 PM Yes, I'll be there--a die hard.
Big Tuna 03-12-2009, 11:30 PM yeah I am anxious too, sofar all I have seen is the teaser on a DVD last month with just a flash of the Star Trek Insignia, music and a date.
Danimal 03-12-2009, 11:50 PM Hollywood better not screw this up!!
Arkay 03-13-2009, 12:24 AM Agreed; I hope they don't screw it up. On one level, the special effects and such are far superior to what could be done when the original/earlier versions were made, so that isn't the issue. The real issues are how well the story is written, how appropriate the casting is, and how skilfully the whole thing is put together. Worst case, I'll try to mentally separate it from the "real" Star Trek and try to enjoy it as a separate movie/story on its own. From the trailers, I'm cautiously optimistic; it may be a good movie. I look forward to seeing it!
Teron 04-06-2009, 06:28 AM I will see Star Trek opening day(still have to see Watchmen...).
Also check out the latest Terminator Salvation trailer with NIN music - very cool.
Tmac83 04-06-2009, 08:40 AM I am very excited for the movie as well, will be there on opening day!
gearhound 04-06-2009, 08:48 AM I'll wait until the reviews come out first.
I can buy a set of tires for what ticket prices are now days?
Steve
clydeselsor 04-06-2009, 08:50 AM You guys are a bunch of Star Trek nerds!! Yeah, I'll be there... :D
I am very much looking forward to this movie. I will assume that with todays technology they should be able to make a really compelling movie. I am almost sad that Enterprise as a TV series didn't make it. But.....I still can't...wait...for this movie!

I find movie critics to be useless. Oh and forget about depending on any trekkie's opinion of this movie, if their discontent for Enterprise is any indication...

Just a couple of things.
trailer #1: They use a flint striker and what appears to be the
same sort of welding equipment we use today. One would think by the
23rd century they would have something a bit more advanced
to weld the enterprise together.
trailer #2:
The Corvette scene looks like something that would be better
suited for a Mad Max flick than a Star Trek movie.
ducati_EL34 04-06-2009, 01:35 PM trailer #2:

Not if young Jimmy stole his dad's 60ish corvette, and went for a joyride...

That olde outdated technology is the reason the Enterprise lasted for so long, maybe if they made 1701-D that way it would have lasted longer.
There I go taking this seriously.:D .......again.:screwy:
The corvette scene, I think that had more to do with what they were saying about Kirk as a character. I think they are trying to make this movie somewhat "unlike" previous Star Trek pieces. Me, I am fine with that, so long as it is well done.

I would think most heavy industries would use the technology that works reliably & cheap and do so until something more reliable & more cheap comes along.
If it ain't broke don't fix it in other words.
Georgiestar 04-07-2009, 03:09 PM I wasnt sure about the idea of making another movie, oh well will have to see it.
I am trying to get into enterprise since I have some of the box sets, but still havent watched it all *sigh*
glen65 04-08-2009, 11:29 AM If they want to continue on with Star Trek the writers
are eventually going to have to get their gear shifts out of reverse,
and start looking at a next generation crew.

I hope you are not suggesting that they bring back Jean fluke retard and friends... :thumbsdn:
there is plenty of story telling years between where Enterprise left off and where Kirk gets the keys to the Enterprise...
slow_jazz 04-08-2009, 11:56 AM Can't wait to see it....

Absolutely not,
When I said the next generation I talking about an entire new
crew and ship.
there is plenty of story telling years between where Enterprise left off and where Kirk gets the keys to the Enterprise...
Maybe, but the whole thing can get old quick. Don't really need them to fill in all of the gaps.
jazzwolf 04-20-2009, 12:35 PM I'm definitey looking forward to this movie and I'll be there!
Bigerik 04-20-2009, 12:57 PM I'll be there opening day, watching in IMAX.
However, from what I have seen, it sure don't feel like the Kirk and Spock Star Trek I watched as a kid.
shimniok 04-20-2009, 01:27 PM Curious to see this take on the concept. Looks somewhat promising, but technology and special effects don't make truly good movies.
I like the idea of juxtaposing old and new -- I think that's more realistic. We may have computers but we still use paper thousands of years after it was invented. Sort of along the same lines as craftsman tool chests and hand tools used in BSG instead of turbo laser ratchet wrenches :D
I have been a fan since seeing repeats of TOS as a kid. I still catch the remastered TOS once in awhile and love it. TNG put me off at first, but then grew on me and was a big fan. DS9 I got into at first, then got bored with all the political crap, then followed the last couple seasons and liked it. I also really liked Voyager for the first couple seaons and maybe the last. Or so. I really enjoyed Enterprise as well at first... until they pulled out the old "hey let's mess around with time travel again" with one of their season finales.
I never watched it again. I'm SO sick of time-based sci-fi showing up in Star Trek. Enough already. Cripes. I also suspect that there aren't any more sci fi stories left to tell without recycling old ST plots/stories. But may be I am wrong. Hopefully I am wrong. Maybe I am burned out on the old school sci fi thanks to Enterprise and the latest Star Wars films. :grumpy: OTOH I loved BSG but that is a whole different ballgame.
Maybe a fresh approach / vision for ST is what is needed. I deeply appreciate Gene R's original visions and I think the stories that came from the ST's so far have enriched us fans (and really culture at large). But maybe we're due for an updated look at the future.
Michael
tshoejohn 04-20-2009, 01:34 PM I'll be at the 12:00 AM show.

You need to see all of Enterprise. Is is so much more than just a time travel episode. It was described as temporal cold war. This was exposed in the first season.
As for the new movie, I will be at the theatre to see it.
zombie1210 04-20-2009, 06:42 PM Seems to me that it will be missing one important thing:
CAPTAIN PIKE.
He was first to command the Enterprise.
Someone told me that they have sort of "re-written" Star Trek history.
If they have, it will SUCK big time.
I guess we will find out.

Get over it! Brannan and Braga have already rewritten Star Trek history, starting with the first season of TNG. At least with Enterprise, they tried and did a good job of tying together, the TOS with the TNG.

Yup. Gotta be at least 3 stars before I go.
zombie1210 04-20-2009, 07:03 PM First off...don't tell me what to "get over"....that's rude.
Secondly...using time travel and alternate time scenarios to justify backstory differences can either be a good thing, or extremely cheesy.
Like I said...we will see.
jimfet 04-20-2009, 07:27 PM The Captain Pike episode was one of the best.
ducati_EL34 04-20-2009, 07:30 PM First off...don't tell me what to "get over"....that's rude.
You say rude, I call it "blunt".
I told you to get over it, because rewriting Trek history is nothing new, and if you want to enjoy this movie, "getting over it" might help.
Secondly...using time travel and alternate time scenarios to justify backstory differences can either be a good thing, or extremely cheesy.
That was not what happened in Enterprise. The trek history was rewritten in TNG and there is nothing that can be done about it. However, they did a good job of tying together the rewritten early history and up to TNG.
ducati_EL34 04-20-2009, 07:33 PM The Captain Pike episode was one of the best.
The story was great, the direction left something to be desired. Number 1 had less emotion than Commander Spock... I mean Spock even smiled. :nono:

soundmotor 04-23-2009, 08:57 AM The only false start for me in the film is whom they chose for Scotty, Simon Pegg. I like Pegg but I don't see him in the role. All that said, I am pretty certain he will hit a home run and own the role from here on out. However, Paul McGillion would have been pitch perfect. Watched him enough on SG-Atlantis to feel he could have easily handled it. What's odd is that his name appears on the IMDB cast log for the new film and it turns out he was in the running for the role. I wonder what happened there? IMO, all of the characters do look plausible as young versions of the TOS cast w. the exception of Scotty. You can draw your own conclusions on Doohan, Pegg, & McGillion's resemblance -

Ted Cassidy was in three TOS episodes.
zombie1210 04-24-2009, 10:44 PM Correct. I had too much Tranya.

That is for sure... But I seem to remember Roddenberry had some input on the first season, and he was not too lucid at that point. Seasons one and two hd two big problems, Jumpsuits and Wesley Crusher... :thumbsdn:
soundmotor 04-25-2009, 08:29 AM I watched TNG because it was on and certainly watched it every week. Was there any other sci-fi show even broadcast in the late 80's? Although I like Patrick Stewart, the kindler, gentler, conflict resolution style of starship captaining always left me cold. Personal preference was how Riker was portrayed, much more like the original Kirk. Data is certainly still a fave too. The rest, send to the airlock. However, TNG absolutely paved the way for the tumult of sci-fi shows since. IIRC it was nearly a dead genre on broadcast TV prior to the arrival of TNG. I don't know if anyone has read the sneak reviews from the UK on the new ST but by all accounts it is a steamroller and should lock many sequels to come. Good!

Agreed 100% I was watching it too. It was fresh for its time and there were good episodes. Worf to the airlock? That was the one original bright idea they had, as characters go...
WRT Riker, without the beard, does he remind you of Potsy Webber of Happy Days?

SBEEZ 05-04-2009, 02:57 PM I haven't been this stoked for a movie since the new Indiana Jones, which was a big disappointment. My brother got to see a press preview, and said it was fantastic. And he's not half the fan I am.
I was a fan of the other movies, but thought they were generally running out of ideas. Thus, I was glad to see a reboot. My next hope: a new Star Trek show similar to the new Battlestar Galactica.
markc2 05-04-2009, 04:15 PM I am actually surprised nobody has mentioned Q. Some of the best episodes are between him and Picard.
The one with Moriarty who steps OUT of the holodeck.
I am beginning to think based on what I've seen of previews the man who talks Kirk into joining starfleet is Pike.

SBEEZ 05-05-2009, 04:57 PM TNG remains my favorite series. Though DS9 and TOS are tied for second. DS9 for some good acting and story lines, and TOS for its classic-ness. Many of the episodes from the early days of DS9 were really snore-fests though.
That being said, Wesley Crusher was a little too much. I hated Q at the time, but he's grown on me over time. TNG also introduced the Borg and set the stage for the next 20 years of Trek, which slowly degraded over time.
tshoejohn 05-07-2009, 10:36 PM :thmbsp:I just saw it, and I thought it was great! The special effects were like a mixture of Star trek and Battlestar Galactica (new series) with a much bigger budget. Pretty fast paced start to finish. I got to go see it again on IMAX !
Bigerik 05-07-2009, 11:05 PM Just saw it in IMAX tonight. Still not 100% sure what I think of it. Odd detail stuff kept snapping me out of it. It was a good sci-fi movie, but I don't know if it was a good Star Trek movie or not.
2DualsNotEnough 05-08-2009, 03:01 AM I just got back from seeing it in IMAX tonight, too.I really liked it a lot.Im glad they didnt go by the old ST playbook on some things. And it still had the humor of the original. And the main characters were all a nice fit.The new Uhuru is the hottest thing on feet.

The Voyager writers REALLY started running out of ideas and massively overused the Borg until they became a cliched shell of what they were in TNG.
I remember the episode of TNG where they were introduced. They were actually frightening. That could be because I was about 10 at the time though.
When Picard was assimilated--now THAT was a classic episode.

1980's sci-fi movies and series were really great..
having them out again with all the advance technology used in movies today is great..

ivge gotta say that i appreciate old movies..
Arkay 05-08-2009, 12:17 PM I don't get into watching theater movies so much these days as I used to, but this one will definitely be a theater-must-see... Sucks that it is already out elsewhere, and hasn't started showing here yet. :sigh:
I am very much looking forward to this movie. I will assume that with todays technology they should be able to make a really compelling movie. I am almost sad that Enterprise as a TV series didn't make it. But.....I still can't...wait...for this movie!
I picked up the Enterprise series on DVD (boxed sets) here, since it never showed on local TV --or at least, not on the channels that I get! I enjoyed it, but don't really view it as the same show as "Star Trek" TOS; as long as I treat them like two different, but good, series, it's okay. Enterprise was actually a GOOD series; I think people were too into demanding it dovetail with the original (and the Next Generation), and therefore too critical of it.
I'd agree, though, that it got a bit weaker towards the end. Most series do that, to some degree. Babylon Five was one of the best sci-fi series ever made, but towards the end it looked like they were compressing six seasons of episodes into one, skipping over huge chunks of history, etc... I had the feeling that they'd shot a lot of stuff in preparation for an extended run, then had the plug pulled and had to figure out how to make a limited number of episodes from what they'd shot.
I intend to enjoy the new movie, precisely because I will try NOT to equate it to the earlier ones, but just watch it as a new story that resembles others in some ways. In my experience, that is the best way to be able to enjoy these "revived" series and remakes. You can never really go back, and we shouldn't expect moviemakers to be able to, either. Just to give us a reasonable facsimile, with some "cool" updates!
Tell me that is not you!
Yes, please. And tell us that this wasn't an "audition pic", in the hopes of being cast in the new movie...
I will pass... :D
If you add the word "water", you'll have a great caption for the picture!
(Kirk says, "I will pass water..." :D)

Some aspects of it certainly weren't bad, but some of the acting was so atrocious it hurt me to watch it. It was like watching a sinking ship.

Scott Bakula as Archer pretty much. (Tripp, Malcolm, Phlox, & T'pal however did great.)

Man, I honestly can't remember who was on the show anymore because it's been so long (proably stopped watching in '03, mainly cause I went off to college, busy, etc.). I just remember cringing at some really bad acting. And Archer did not work for me as the captain. Some of the plots weren't too bad, but I remember several of them being rather dull.
Perhaps it got better after I stopped watching.

Yes the last season was really good. I also liked Scott Backula as Archer. I particularly liked their spin on the vulcans.

At least we can agree that the new movie kicked ass. I'll have to check out the last season of Enterprise. I remember hearing about a petition to keep the show on the air, so it must have had some merit.
Carmine02 05-18-2009, 08:05 AM Nice. Thanks for sharing the link. I have plans to watch it.
pioneervato 05-19-2009, 09:53 PM Finally got to go see the movie. I really liked it. A lot more intense action than many of the the earlier movies and lots of neat tie ins to the original series. Did you notice Captain Pike in the wheel chair at the end of the movie?
The special effects were very good and the acting was not bad either. I thought there was enough there for the older generation who were around when the first series came around and enough there for the younger crowd as well.
I would go see it again.
ducati_EL34 05-19-2009, 10:10 PM Finally got to go see the movie. I really liked it. A lot more intense action than many of the the earlier movies and lots of neat tie ins to the original series. Did you notice Captain Pike in the wheel chair at the end of the movie?
Yes he is in the wheel chair, but, not for the same reason as in the original series story line...
