While I was at the TV shop picking up BPC that will probably get tossed, I made a comment to the owner about this little 9" RCA B&W that I know has been sitting on the "for sale" rack for 8-10 years with a $10 price tag. He said that I could have it for free if I wanted it. He figured that if no one has bought it by now, no one will. We both agreed that there is virutally no demand for B&W's anymore. The model tag is missing; but, it uses a KCS203 chassis and has several '79 date codes inside. When I fired it up, the CRT was very dim. I rejuvenated the tube and it looks fine now. I'm curious as to what was supposed to attach to the bottom of this set. If this was an AC/DC set, I'd say a battery pack; but, this is an AC only set. Maybe they used the same case for AC/DC sets as well as AC sets. There was also an '82 19" knob tuned Emerson color TV that I know has been there as long as the B&W had. He had $35 on it; but, said he would take $20 and that it had just as good, or better, picture than any of the newer sets. I started to get it; but, I really need to save my money for older stuff. And, I remember how cheap '80's Emersons were. This one looked like a rebadged goldstar.

You'd be surprised at the number of TV's that have passed my way that had multiple cigarette burns on the cabinet. I had a modern silver TV awhile back that had a hole about the size of a half dollar burnt thru the cabinet top.

Speaking of burns, the underneath of that set looks kind of toasty! how about an inside shot?

My KV-1201 has the infamous lit-cigarette burn on the top of the plastic cabinet. Sucks.

It's one thing to be a smoker, but to inhale TV cabinet plastic with your smoke?! :yikes:

I have a similar set that's AC/DC and yes, it's a battery pack on the bottom.
The batteries are junk of course after 30 years and it would cost several times the value of the set to replace them with modern cells.

As a smoker for sixteen years (and hopefully not much longer,) I could never understand seeing cigarette burns on radios, TVs, countertops, bathtubs, etc. Ashtrays can be bought new for as little as fifty cents. Seeing burns like that reflects on the previous owner's poor attitude - if they weren't a smoker they still wouldn't have taken care of the appliance.

I always love opening up a turntable or integrated stereo to find some sort of liquor or dacquiri was spilled all over it. Geez.

Actually, I was shocked to learn mine was from '79. I figured it would have been from the mid '70's; but, we all know that many of those TV's were in production for years.

Another interesting thing is the case style and handle. It looks like a scaled down version of the cabinet and handle on that heavy as lead 1st 19" RCA colortrak. I think the chassis was a CTC74. I don't know why they even bothered to put a handle on that beast.

Wow grimer, My brother and I shared a bedroom when we were younger. On Christmas morning in 1975, we awoke to find a pair of very similar models to that one you have a picture staring us right in the face, all set up on our dressers. One still works great, the other died about 15 years ago I believe and hit the trash heap. Ours had wood grain on the sides, black face and top, with white bottoms and backs and a funky smoked glare shield that covered the whole front. It kinda fits in that little recess all the way around the front. Way cool retro looking! I'll see if I can get a snapshot of it next time I am over to my mothers house. Heck, I might even snag it and retro out with the rabbit ears before analog goes bye-bye. Thanks for the flashback!

Funny, it seems a lot of tv shops still have one 9" bw on the shelf! I've brought home a couple that way.

Neat. My 13" XL-100 from 1977 has a cabinet with a similarly designed cabinet & knobs.

EEEW!! is all I have to say about all the niccotene all over that TV. And the burns are just horrifying.

I smoke, and none of my stuff has ever been that filthy, and I also make use of an ashtray.

Clean it up with Windex, that works great for removing niccotene from things.

But that is a really cool little TV. I was actually looking for something like that for in my room, but instead I came across a 13" RCA XL-100. It's a little big for where I wanted to put it, but I really like it.

Hey, I noticed there's also a number of scratches on it. Have you considered sanding it down, body filling those burn divets, and giving it a fresh coat of silver paint? The face is allready in really nice shape.
You could get this little thing looking like new! I just wish I had it, so I can paint it up and make it look new lol... there's nothing more satisfying than restoring a vintage electronic.

I have a dealer display sign for the Sportables; looks like the same era as that ad/set. It needs a good home...

I had a 9" Philco-Ford on a swivel base in that same orange color. I also had a newer GTE-Philco in the same style beige case. I don't remember what happened to either set.

Didn't Panasonic and some Matsushita-Quasars come in the Avocado green? Had a couple of those mid-80s 13" Quasars with the remote that's a miniature version of the TV set...one was white (model TP2156YH from my notes) and the other was pink! I painted the pink one black but didn't do such a good job (lol) That one got tossed out in a fight with my mother about how many TV's I had hoarded at the time...think I had 13 or 14 at one point.
