I am heading home for spring break at the end of the week and my mother has a Toshiba CX3583A in our basement. It has power board issues (I am pretty sure) when you try to turn it on you can hear the relay click but then nothing happens. Anyway, she doesn't want the tv anymore but the problem is that is too heavy to cary up the stairs (this tv has an oak casing and a number of speakers built in). I was wondering if it would be safe for us to dismantle the television and bring it upstairs in parts. I know that there is some danger with the picture tube but I don't know specifics. We would like to do this because we don't want to pay someone, but I want to make sure we are safe. Any information about safety or how to go about doing this would be very helpful. Thanks guys!

In that set, most of the weight is in its CRT (picture tube). I'd be very careful around it, since A) it could implode if mishandled, and B) the 2nd anode (big thick wire on the top of the tube) can shock you with 30kV. CRTs tend to hold a static charge even long after being used. I don't think it's wise to dismantle the set.

We were lucky (?) to win a 36 inch Sony in a raffle a while back. When it dies, it will be laid on the floor in front of its stand, face down, and disassembled. I will have a very big box, and a furniture blanket. The CRT will go in the box, and the neck broken off, with the blanket over the box. The darn thing will then be carried out in pieces to the landfill. It MUST weigh over 200 pounds, as it took 3 big high school kids and I to get it into the house, and I "ain't no" weakling!
A person experienced in hauling away furniture, etc. would be a good choice to get it out of the lady's house. Why risk injury?

Yeah we are just not sure who to call, plus I believe that will have to be recycled. As much as I hate best buy I am wondering if they would haul it away.

Yeah, the only problem with that is that we don't want any damage done to the house when someone tries to pull it out.

Call all of the local TV shops. There's a slight chance that one will come take it off your hands. Back in the day, TV shops loved to get free TV's so that they could either fix them and sell them or use them for parts. Of course, used CRT TV sales are not near what they were 20 years ago; but, it's still worth a try. All they can do is say "no". There is one local TV shop that's all time getting calls to come haul off broken TV's. He just gives them my number.....I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I did end up calling around and found a TV/Appliance store to come haul it away. They are coming to get the set tomorrow! Thanks for all the help guys!
