I started to clean the 1-108 Sylvania chassis. The CRT face cleaned up with Windex. I tried both GooGone and Windex on the chassis. Windex seems to work best, but the tar seems to have really bonded with it. Any other suggestions other than something abrasive? I can't believe how much tar there is.

I've attached a photo. I seem to have a Micamold infestation. The two Micamold caps in the photo are listed as ceramic in the factory service manual part list. Sam's give a tubular ceramic part no. to replace them. I didn't know I had these so I'll be ordering more caps. Playthings of the Past has the exact Centralab part number for the tubular version. I have a stock of old silver micas I might use also.

The factory manual drawing show tubular ceramics. The Sam's photo however shows micas even though they list ceramic. Do schematics ever reflect reality?

In the center is a disk ceramic. I'm a bit amazed by what I see. It appears to have never been encapsulated. There should at least be a bit left on the leads if there ever was any. I think the missing piece was missing from day one. It's only run at about 200 volts and the value isn't critical, so I think it's quite possible that it was always this way. I just can't believe that someone would have installed it!

Get some Goop waterless hand cleaner, orange scent/color, with NO pumice. As it has no grit, it won't hurt the metal. Comes in what looks like a lotion bottle. Last place I bought it was Harbor Freight. Slop it on and let it sit a while to dissolve the crud.

Thanks, I'll try that. I happen to have a half gallon of Goop. I assume you removed the residue with a damp cloth? I'm not anxious to hose the chassis down.

I need to stop spelling disc as disk.

How about denatured alcohol and a cloth? Leaves no residue. Wear a rubber glove.

Bug and tar remover! Just use in a well ventilated area. Tight areas, use with cotton swabs.

Re: the Goop waterless hand cleaner: just wipe off with rags or paper towels. It smells so good it could almost be dessert.

I mispoke. The half gallon I have is of a citrus based hand cleaner similar to GoJo. I also have Goop, but the non-citrus type. The GoJo works but has the pumice so I won't use it. It seems that it's the citrus part that's important since the orange Goop works for you.

Guess I'll look for some tomorrow.

I tried about every other polar and nonpolar solvent that I could think of without success.
