I just found one of these for free in my school but was told that it didn't work and that I could have it.
I tok it home (even came with the world's coolest VCR remote, jog dial on a wireless remote), and gave it ta tape. the picture looks like a slightly weak analog TV picture when working as best it can, then it rapidly degenerates the audio goes from hiFi to normal and emits a really weird tone that's annoyng and the picture goes to snow. It then stops.
Anyone know anything? This looks to be a REALLY nice deck and I'd love to use it on a daily basis.

Check to see if the belts are still good and not loose.

I don't feel comfortable opening it up myself...I'm gonna leave that to my friend who is a broadcast engineer and rebuilds JVC SVHS decks...

Might be some gunk in the tape path or on the cylinder dragging it down til it stops. What does your tape look like after this happens? Regardless, it definitely needs a good going-through and inspection first before I would trust it with a good tape. That is a complicated mechanism.

Do you have the HR-S1000U or HR-S10000U ? reason I ask is that I recently acquired a HR-S10000U that works fine, except the rewind is very weak. Playback shuttling forward and back works fine though. Is the high speed rewind a belt driven mech or would there be some other problem with it?
