View Full Version : I discovered an Antique radio guy in Mt. Dora, Fl.
Tapehead47 01-17-2009, 06:37 PM We took a little day-trip this morning from Lutz, Fl. to Mt. Dora to check out the Antique Extravaganza. I don't know how many acres it involves, but there is no way you could see it all in one day. The scale of this event is staggering.
Acre upon acre of temporary set-ups under canopies. Some cool stuff but nothing I was seriously interested in.
After a few hours of looking at butter churns, fancy glasses, and furniture, I was about bored into a coma. Then we went to a more interesting area with old-time permanent shops that are open every day, year round.
Among these shops was Vintage Electronic Restoration Services run by a gentleman named Ted Miguel. When I stepped into his store the whole day became worthwhile. Here was a shop I could spend some time in.
Ted specializes in TV and Radio, Vacuum Tube Hi-Fi, and Guitar amps from the 20's thru the 70's. I took a few photos to share with my AK friends. I have no affiliation with Ted or his shop and am passing on this information to benefit anyone living in the dead heart of Florida who might like to check out his services.
I'll be returning within a few weeks to buy an old radio.
By the way, Ted is the son of a Rear Admiral and has a long lineage of U.S. Navy relatives. I plan to talk with him more next time as my wife was anxious to move on. Lots more butter churns to look at!

Tapehead47 01-17-2009, 09:57 PM Wow..... thanks for sharing, let us know what radio you get!
I'm planning to get a Grundig Majestic table model. He thinks he can get me one at a fair price. But I'll probably pick up something else, too.
anytune 01-17-2009, 09:58 PM You must be talking about Renninger's. I've been a few times. They usually have 800 to 1,000 vendors. Definitely a two-day gig, because some of the best deals can be made Sunday when the vendors are starting to pack up.

Do you want his phone number?
I don't want to break any AK rules. As I said, No Affiliation.

Damn, Sandy, I always wanted one of those, too. I know how you feel.
centralflori 01-17-2009, 10:03 PM Is this at Renniger's Flea Market?

Maybe. Are you referring to the stores on 441? (Probably right in your neighborhood). All we knew was we were attending the Antiques Extravaganza in Mt. Dora. It's something we wanted to do for a couple of years but only got around to it today. It was a 'spur of the moment' thing. I think we'll go more often.

don20032004 01-18-2009, 09:30 AM Is this somthing that's just once a year? Or is it a weekly thing?

Tapehead47 01-18-2009, 10:03 AM Pulled a flyer out of my pocket from Ted's....that's the place. Renningers in Mt. Dora. It's all making sense now:yes:

Sorry, Don, can't say when it is. Just happened to coincide with the urge for a road trip.
don20032004 01-18-2009, 10:08 AM I found it on google. Sat & Sun 9 to 5
anytune 01-18-2009, 10:21 AM I know that in years past Renninger's held three Extravaganzas per year. Usually in January, February and November. Don't know if the poor economic climate has reduced that number. Their antiques mall fronting US 441 is open year-round.
Tapehead47 01-18-2009, 02:50 PM Thanks, Anytune. I think that's the best info so far: the Mall is open year-round, 9-5 and the Extravaganza (the gigantic flea-market) is 3 times a year.
treserious 01-18-2009, 02:59 PM what I want to know is what that somewhat obscured big black pile of iron is sitting on top of the set in the bottom left quarter of this pic

looks like a solid machine.
could you crop from the original source image and give me a better view of that amp?

I don't know what it is, other than a tube amp. Missing some tubes, but I don't know much about tube amps....
Will try the crop....tic....tick.....ticka......
well, not very clear but perhaps it will help.

good looking design, check
has potential, check
nice black paint, check
I wonder if any one of our tube amp gurus have a clue as to what it is.
I put it through photoshop to try and lighten it a bit to get more detail, but I still have no clue as to what it is.

newhallone 01-18-2009, 06:26 PM Might not be vintage. It looks like plastic switches on the front.
electronjohn 01-19-2009, 11:36 AM Butter churns? We don't need no steenking butter churns! Looks like big fun! Had onbe of those green & yellow planes with the folding wings when I was a kid. HAD being the operative term. Totally in love with that RCA marine radio...gotta have it!
