So I was riding around on my bike when I came by a 2004 Philips chinese-made piece of crap.

But my '89 JVC isn't doing so great, so I dragged it home.

I hooked it up and the picture is decent. Definitely better than my JVC :( And it has two AV inputs, plus audio out. And it's stereophonic.

I really, really like my JVC. But there's no denying this TV is a much needed upgrade, and I've noticed the video quality I'm getting from my RF modulator seems kinda grainy lately. So I've decided that if I can fix this set, I will be giving away the JVC and keeping this instead.

It's a 2004 and has a Panasonic tube. It has some pretty bad HV reg issues just like my JVC did when I first got it. They went away with use on my JVC, it must have been sitting for a long time or something. But if I can fix this TV, I will do a full recap with Panasonic capacitors and that should take care of the HV reg issues.

Anyway, it works and it has a great picture when it does, but it randomly shuts on and off a lot. When I first plugged it in, it went for about 2 minutes then it started shutting on, off, on, off, on, off, on, off, and it will keep doing that until it either stays off or you unplug it. When it stops turning on and off and stays off, the power button turns it on just fine and the set will go for a few minutes. Right now, it's going but sometimes it will turn off and then back on and stay on.

Any ideas?

Also, model is 20MS3442/17. I did a google search... and someone in a forum posted that their TV was doing the exact same thing mine is (on, off, on, off, on, off). Nobody posted a fix though.

Update 2: Also, remote doesn't work.

It appears a lot of these models have the same failure, but nobody has given a solution. Someone on Yahoo Answers suggested that maybe the microprocessor failed. Possible?

Probably why it was on the curb...

Go to craigslist, it is crawling with free working CRTs.

Surprisingly, not around these parts.

EDIT: Also, nevermind, the remote works fine. It's just the volume buttons that don't.

I'd check any electrolytic caps in the power supply and horizontal driver circuits. Beyond that, I wouldn't spend too much time on this one. The newer Philips TV's are nothing to write home about. There is a slightly older Philips chassis that will have a bad cap in the horizontal circuit that will cause power/horizontal problems and it will blow the HOT if not changed.

It's probably caps, as all of the caps in it are random Chinese brands I hate never heard of before (Jicon? LT?). You guys are right though. I was looking at it, and not only is it silver (which I hate) but it looks like a plasticky POS. Then I hooked up my JVC again and...

If you read my thread bashing WEGAs, well that's pretty much what happened.

My JVC has no HV reg problems, the picture is much better aligned (CNN ticker was cut off on the Philips), the colors don't look like blazing neon, JVC has a slightly sharper pic... I guess I wanted to like the Philips because it has AV inputs and is flat, but I like my '89 JVC much better. Plus it was built in the USA by JVC, not subcontracted out to China. Tomorrow I will be introducing the Philips to a large green metal container out by the street. The hunt for a better TV continues!

Just keep checking CL, any thrift stores, and continue going on "curb shopping" trips. I try to visit my local Salvation Army once a week. I can usually pick up broken TV's for $5 each. A week ago, I picked up a 19" '89 Sony for $5. One of the workers was carrying it to the dumpster when I stopped him. All it needed was one cap and some CRT bias and drive adjustments and it plays fine. Just stay away from anything made by Funai. In fact, I try to avoid any TV newer than the late '90's, especially if I have to buy it. And, don't fool with any Zenith made from about '92 on. If the CRT is not already bad, it will be soon.

I was tempted by an '89 Sony 19", $10 at Goodwill this week. Not my kinda thing, though. Yep, they are out there.

And, I saw an interesting NAP Magnavox 13" stereo TV with speakers on the side at a local thrift store; but, they wanted $35. I didn't look for a date or jacks; but, it looked like a late '80's set. They had a couple of newer BPC 13" sets priced at $45/ea. and some 25"/27" set priced at $75.
