Remember this one? Had a starting price of 149.95? I contacted the seller several times attempting to get him down to at least 75.00 with no luck. Finally after his fifth or sixth attempt to sell it he offered it to me for 85.00. Yeah, I know I am crazy and really needed that set like a hole in the head!
However,I haven't seen one of these since the early eighties and thought it would be a good one to save.
The seller was of course the original owner that spent a fortune for it in '66 (600 dollars) and wanted to recoup at least some of the money! After all, He said,It still works fine! (somehow it still does)
He couldn't understand why no one wanted it except me??!
Only thing he wouldn't give up was the owners manual and tags since he didn't get the full 149.00!!
The other odd thing is the wire by the speaker, He said that was so that he could make recordings of his favorite shows...

It is very thick in places, But when brushed away reveals a nice clean chassis.
Best of all, It was never stored in a basement. We moved it out of it's original spot in the den where it had been all these years.
No mold or rust.

hummmmm. I'm glad you saved the set, but that was kind of petty of him not to give you the manual and tags. What the hell is he going to do with them? So it does work? How's the picture? I don't think I've ever seen a GE tube console here. In my home-town it was RCA land.

He knew I wanted the sales stuff, Tags and sales receipt almost worse than the tv! First he said he couldn't find it, Then when I prodded him he just said that I stole the tv anyway and to forget about it. The GE sets were considered low end junk around here and most were scrapped out by the late 70's
I am surprised as this one has a great picture with good color and contrast, Not like what I was used to seeing on on ones from the day.
Just needs the tuner and controls cleaned and the dust blown out at this point in time.

well, I'm glad you got it! You have more tolerance than me! "That" type of seller always makes me po'd. I worked with a friend of mine who had a used/consignment shop. When some older people brought stuff in to sell or consign they would always get furious when Phyllis would tell them the item wouldn't move if it was priced that high. If you only knew how many times we had to hear "Well ... I paid (so many dollars) for it 30 years ago.... I always had to bite my tongue and not say "Up yours, take it home" They usually did get mad and not bring the item in, or if they did and it was marked at that price for a long period of time, they would finally agree to lower the price. Your sets previous owner must have been stubborn. Wasn't this like the 4th time it hit eBay????

I never had a good opinion on the picture these make, though I think they have good character. But check out my Consumer Reports thread over on early bw-they tested what I think might be the same basic set.

The thing that so many people either don't realize or understand is that they got USE out of a given item. If they used it long enough and didn't suffer undue repair bills then they could literally give it away and still have gotten good value for their money.

Example, a used car purchased for $5000 and lasting 5 years with no extraordinary repairs is less than $100 a month or about $3 a day. Not counting gas or insurance etc this is still quite a deal. *SO* assuming that you gave away that car at the end of those 5 years you still got good value out of it, but in reality you could probably get around $1500-2500 for it, so you see my point.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU PAID FOR SOMETHING, as long as you got a reasonable amount of use from it!! Slap them silly next time they start with that nonsense.

Believe me, I would like to slap people like that silly! But I wanted the tv and had to put up with the nonsense, At least I got it (sort of) reasonably.
I could look at it this way also, If I were to buy it for a dollar on ebay and it was too far for me to pick up it would cost an extra 245.00 for shipping!

That's a good picture on that set...I have one like it but the CRT has a clear glass faceplate (not etched) which seems very rare. The clear glass CRT's do not seem to get all the crud that the the etched ones do, such as delaminating, green halo, etc. But the very nice looking CRT on mine is arcing and produces no picture!

Seems like my luck too, Very rarely do I get a tube that's NOT delaminating! And if it is not, Then one or all the guns are weak...
Now I have about 4 tubes with great emission but are going to need the heat gun trick.
Those projects are going to wait until the winter though.

I am not surprised convergance is off, since the yoke is twisted to the right. You should be able to turn it back to the right position and reset convergence without much effort. I do not recall many convergence problems with those sets. I had a table model version of that set. It was ok for a GE.
