View Full Version : Tropic thunder
grumpy 12-30-2008, 06:04 PM Never even for a second been a stiller fan. Why in the world I even brought this video home is still beyond me. It was made for people who are
A. Either tripping some crappy acid and are easily amused or
B. Have the IQ of a piece of paper.
Tom cruise sucks ( never expected much from him )
Stiller, I have seen better acting at my kids grade school pageants.
The umpteen other "stars" in this movie made it to make money. Definitely not to entertain.
Never before have I walked in the rental store and demanded my money back. That was until I watched this steaming hunk of crap of a movie.

caddisgeek 12-30-2008, 08:03 PM Makes me want to go out and rent it
B. Have the IQ of a piece of paper.
This is a interesting deduction on your part, as a reasonable IQ is required to get the rather hilarious satire in the film :P
It is a shame you did not find the funny that so many others have.
soundmotor 12-30-2008, 08:22 PM Hey, I was just walking by and heard you all talking about a movie or something..........
onepixel 12-30-2008, 08:27 PM I must have an IQ of a piece of paper.
:D
thilaseen 12-30-2008, 08:28 PM I'm pretty (read very) broadminded and do possess a sense of humour but when I found my kids watching this, I spat the dummy. How anyone can say this is funny is beyond my comprehension. :thumbsdn::thumbsdn:

They can say it is funny because they have watched a lot of the movies Tropic Thunder spoofs.
In any case, Tropic Thunder is not perfect of course, but above average and quite welcome in the face of comedies such as "Zohan" and action movies such as "Wanted".
jbrainey 12-30-2008, 08:44 PM I was looking forward to seeing this until you told me tom cruise was in it. What a P.O.S. Thanks for the heads up grumpy.

It would be a shame to miss this. BTW Grumpy spilled the beans on what would've been a VERY funny surprise. Too bad, this flick has a lot of laughs.
ccheath 12-30-2008, 10:07 PM My son like that movie. I think it sucks. They try to be funny and I don't find it hilarious. Go back to Drama School.

+1 my son rented it, I turned it off. It wasn't worth the phosphor on my CRT's
Holst 12-31-2008, 09:06 AM Stiller had a very short lived series on Fox before his movie career started, it was funny as all hell. The "U2, the early years" and "Cape Munster" bits were great.

Sorry, I was unaware this was a surprise.
Wornears 12-31-2008, 09:21 AM I thought it was a hoot! Skewers every war movie cliche you can think of, and plenty of Hollywood stereotypes. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan by any stretch, but he is hilarious here.
It's not Macbeth, but it is fun.
shrinkboy 12-31-2008, 09:36 AM i'm no fan of tom cruise, but he's done some superb work over the years, no matter how you feel about him as a person i.e. Magnolia, and Michael Mann's Collateral come to mind. i thought he was superbly disgusting in Tropic Thunder-and like others here, i too have the i.q. of a piece of paper, cause i laughed me friggin head off from beginning to end. as the film went on, and you began to recognize all the 'hero' films of the last 15-20 years that were getting mercilessly skewered, it just became more and more fun. would i see it again? nah....but for what it was, it was terrific. and Robert Downey? c'mon, that shit was hilarious: "you went full retard? man, thass yo problem man, you went full retard. no one goes full retard!!"
matel 12-31-2008, 10:03 AM On the other hand... sometimes a big steamng pile of crap has huge neon signs over it with big neon arrows pointing to the pile and yes i watched this on cable. It is what it looks like....
blownsi 01-01-2009, 04:42 PM I watched this with a group of 6 other people.... not one of us found one bit of it funny.... what a waste of my time.
markc2 01-01-2009, 08:11 PM I am so amazed at the such differing views of this movie. I thought Tom C. was awesome as that character. All of the movies this spoofed, most of which I have watched, made it that much more fun.
I really loved 8 1/2 also.
Mark
High_Current 01-01-2009, 09:10 PM It was OK compared to the other crap available. My paper IQ isn't making me rich via talking people out of their green pieces of paper under the guise of passion for audio, but it was entertaining. A not too bad movie overall (if you like satire as I do) especially if you saw the satired movies.
EVBoy 01-01-2009, 09:25 PM I really liked it, especially Robert Downey Jr. playing a black guy. At the end he turns into Peter O'Toole of Lawrence of Arabia. Tom Cruise is also pretty good.
I would recommend it - it's a riot.
doucanoe 01-01-2009, 09:58 PM We were down in Decorah Iowa a few months back visiting my daughter at college. Someone decided at one point that we should go to the local movie house so off we went. Not much of interest was showing so we figured that Tropic Thunder was as good as anything.
I would have left have left half way through the movie given the choice but we didn't have much else to do before dinner so we stuck it out.
Although there were some funny scenes, Tropic Thunder was pretty painful to sit through. I walked out of the movie theater feeling dumber that I was when I first sat down.

What he said.:thmbsp: I'll add that I generally dislike most Ben Stiller films, but Robert Downey Jr.'s role was hilarious, and Tom Cruise was very funny too. Was he supposed to be one of the Weinstein Brothers??
Waboman 01-02-2009, 02:24 AM I thought Robert Downey Jr. stole the show. I too am not a Ben Stiller fan, and found him to be the weakest link. However, this movie still made me laugh.:D
Yes, I believe Cruises' role was patterned off the Weinstein bros.
BULLWINKLE 01-02-2009, 10:08 AM I watched this with a group of 6 other people.... not one of us found one bit of it funny.... what a waste of my time.
+1
Boring......
Out Of Time 01-02-2009, 11:30 AM My son like that movie. I think it sucks. They try to be funny and I don't find it hilarious. Go back to Drama School.
That's just it. They were dudes playin' the dudes DISGUISED as OTHER dudes! That's the whole point and why I found it funny. They're actors playing actors playing it over the top.
Of course, I went into it, tapping into my toilet-paper level IQ...:D
prisoners 01-02-2009, 02:51 PM I'm starting to think Ben Stiller is a very good comedic writer and not a very good comedic actor. He was the weak point of this film, but the dialogue was hilarious. Stiller was decent in Meet the Parents, but he's always overshadowed by better performers.
onepixel 01-02-2009, 02:56 PM I'm starting to think Ben Stiller is a very good comedic writer and not a very good comedic actor...
Yeah... I agree. His acting reminded me of his part in Mystery Men.

Full Retard... :D
Out Of Time 01-02-2009, 03:54 PM The Simple Jack thing was a send up of Forrest Gump. The whole movie was poking fun at almost everything. There was something offensive for everyone. I wouldn't let my kids see it. The humor is too raw and graphic. But I can appreciate it as an adult.
I was in the US Navy, so very little offends me. Hard to disgust a Sailor.

Former Squid here too. At this point nothing offends me!
Out Of Time 01-02-2009, 04:40 PM ^ Well... maybe sometimes Jarheads do... but they're Jarheads.... 'Nuff Said! :D
caddisgeek 01-02-2009, 05:11 PM Well I last night I finally got around to watching this, (on Grumpy's recommendation) I haven't laughed so hard at a move for a very long time, but I understand it probably not for everyone (people without a sense of humor may struggle with it)
I hear the word 'retard' used constantly these days, especially in movies. My guess is the script writers don't live with, work with or have special needs children themselves.
My wife works with people with intellectual disabilities, and she found Topic Thunder and the Simple Jack bit very funny also. The whole bit was not using the word retard to poke fun at people with ID's, but actually was satirizing the Hollywood portrayal of those with ID's. "You cant go the full retard, because the audience wont connect with you"
To exclude any portion of society from humor is discrimination
ccheath 01-02-2009, 09:48 PM ......but I understand it probably not for everyone (people without a sense of humor may struggle with it)
Is that an insult?? :tongue::D

pulp fiction
thilaseen 01-03-2009, 04:49 AM Well you have to consider that I'm ALMOST 63 and that's my only excuse for what follows.
I confused Tropic Thunder with another POS film that my kids were watching with a group of their mates. Don't get me wrong...I still think it is a crap film, aside from the fact that Tom Cruise is in it, but not in the same category as....wait for it .... "Harold and Kumar.. Escape from Guantanamo Bay" :thumbsdn::thumbsdn:
Grumpy, why don't you rent this one out and give us your impressions?
On 2nd thought, better not.
I'm embarrassed now. Goodnight.
grumpy 01-03-2009, 07:09 AM I like harold and kumar and find them to be pretty funny.
gyusher 01-13-2009, 03:10 AM Personally I'm not a fan of any actor in this movie with the exception of Robert Downey jr who I am hot and cold over.
Kinda reminds me of the 'Ace Ventura' type of movies or the 'Jerry Lewis's' of the world that are so bad I'm embarrassed to watch them. I get embarrassed for the actors playing that crazy shit. . .
I rented the movie mostly because it was on BD and in HD. . . As much as I hate these guys I did laugh out loud between throwing up in my mouth and passing gas. . .
. . . I will say that it was the funniest movie of its genre that I have seen but still. . . just saying. . .
2DualsNotEnough 01-13-2009, 03:22 AM I saw it in a theatre with a buddy of mine.We havent laughed that hard in a long time.I think we laughed the hardest at the "previews" at the beginning.Very wicked satire.IQ of fresh lint here.

probably one of the most original openings from a movie that I have seen in a while. Starts running as soon as it starts.

LCruiser122 02-03-2009, 01:51 PM I LOVED it! Granted, it is what it is.... but Robert Downey Jr. shoud get an OSCAR !!!!!!
Seriously tho, As stupid as the movie may be, I was VERY entertained.
PS.... I hated the Zohan. I think its the ONLY Sandler movie I didn't like. (other than the one where he's mad all the time)
jgmacv 02-03-2009, 03:28 PM Can you get that "Booty Sweat" drink at Wal-Mart?
AnalogDigit 02-03-2009, 03:32 PM I did not have high hopes for this movie. Not a big Ben Stiller fan, but I thought it was hilarious. In a few scenes, ripped off Platoon and Apocalypse Now. Robert Downey is great in this movie.
LCruiser122 02-03-2009, 06:19 PM LMAO.................
I was JOKING about the oscar, but I heard he DID get a nomination! Too funny!
