No, not cry. It makes me want to take a swing at this idiot and start using language on him not suitable for church! What a dumb moron! A once nice Zenith Chromacolor II console now destroyed! I should create a youtube account just so I can tell this idiot off! And, he's not the only one on there doing crap like this. There is plenty of it going on; but, I think this is the oldest set I've seen so far that was destroyed. Here we are as collectors that would gladly take this set and we have retards like this smashing them! I'll bet he's one that has a $4000 plasma TV hanging on his wall. Oh, I need to stop now before I really get fired up and wind up getting banned from AK!

P.S. - Hey Zenithfan, you need to get that LCD TV "repair" on youtube. I mean, fair is fair. They smash the quality old stuff we're looking for; so, we smash their modern technology that they think is so great!

Not surprising really. I think the very worst vintage TV smasher I've seen was a music video performed by rock band Blink 182, where Mark Hoppus smashed more than 10 vintage Zenith Chromocolor IIs, like this one on YouTube, in one row with a baseball bat.

Seriously.. I see these TV's (Zenith and Chromacolor) all the time at yard and garage sales around this area, and the people can't even pay people to take them away.. I just don't understand the anger about it when there appear to be so many available and no one takes them. Can't keep them forever waiting for a collector..

I've been there before. Ive had my share of destroying stuff as a kid who didn't know any better. I laughed pretty good when the moron smashed the light fixture above his head by accident.
My most regretful incident was with my friend and I back around 7th grade. We went to the marklund resale shop by his house and found a nice 20" space command 600 table TV in the dumpster from around 1970. For some unknown reason, we brought it back to his house and put it on the ground next to the garage. Instead of trying it out to see what could be done with it, we decided to smash the hell out of it with a sledge hammer. I don't think we even plugged it in to see what it did. Thats one of my most regretful moments of all time. Why I did that was beyond me. I probably would have kept it if it wasn't for my friend. He probably persuaded me to smash it up. I was the only one who liked the TV's, they normally just joined in for the heck of it, but really didn't care. It took another 10 years until I found a similar TV at an estate sale......This video reminds me of that day.

I left a message saying, "Too bad - there's folks that would have given you money for a Chromacolor II."

The smasher replied, "So how much is it worth? It was worth alot (sic) more to me in pieces, since i had to carry it down two flights of steps either way."

I really don't know what to say except that it is a sad commentary on the values and ethics of this generation. I mean, come on, he used just as much energy destroying the thing and then cleaning up his mess (assuming he bothered) as he would have carrying it down two lousy flights of stairs. And let's not forget the light fixture - hope he pulls the fuse first :D

Hell, I'm 5'4" and I carried two bedroom sets, a rocking chair and two tables (all solid wood) down twelve flights of stairs after Katrina because someone was kind enough to give them to me.

So I assumed the worst and replied, "Please forgive me - I was not aware of your physical limitations. Two flights of stairs would be pushing it for someone in your condition." Now, physical or mental, that's debatable.

I left a comment with a few facts...

But I do agree with you. Alot of guys won't make the move on something they want because of the driving distances involved.

Did you watch the zenith roundie on ebay that ended today? You tell me you're finding roundies almost weekly (which I find hard to believe) and you pass them up? Put the thing on ebay and make a few bucks. It works every time. 99% of my ebay sales of vintage TVs go to guys who are not even members or even heard of audiokarma. There is a bigger market out there than you think for these things.


The fact of the matter is, the guys in the TV forums respect TV's like this because we know what they are and what it is that made them good. The average guy just see's it as a pos TV. Obviously millions were made and who knows whats left (probably quite a few yet) we can't save them all. That being said, we know they hit the curb and there is nothing to be done about it. What we especially don't like to see some F'in idiot smash the hell out of one. Conversely, you as an audiophile wouldn't like to see some type of amplifier or speaker you like get the piss beaten out of it with a sledge hammer either.

It sounds like I need to move to your corner of the world if you are finding roundies on a weekly basis for next to nothing.

I see stuff all the time that I would make the drive for if I could; but, poor eyesight prevents that from happening. If I go anywhere; I have to depend on my Mother, my neighbor, or one of my close friends for transportation. My Mother hates going to flea markets, thrift stores, estate sales, etc. She will take me if I ask; but, I'm usually pressured to "hurry up and come on". When I go with my neighbor or friend; I'm not rushed because they get off on "junk hunting" as much as I do. I wouldn't feel right about asking them to make a long trip, though. Lord willing, we'll be hitting the SA, flea market, and whatever else we pass along the way tomorrow. I'm sure there will be plenty of TV's donated to the thrift stores this time of year.

I'm the type of guy who will only dump something only as a last resort. There is an RCA CTC4 sitting here right now and I've had it for months. I finally realized that I didn't want to undertake it's restoration; so, I offered it for free on here and it will be going to WI in the not too distant future. I could have just busted it up and trashed it and kept my mouth shut about it; but, I'd much rather someone get it that can use it.

If you're finding round-screen color TVs in the trash, I'm gonna look into moving to VA. In NYC, a roundie is rare; and if one happens to pop up on Craigslist, the guy knows what he has and prices it accordingly.

It does, however, get to a point where we have so many old TVs and are running out of room for more... Been there. I drive, but don't make quite enough money to drive out to IL or WI or even really Boston to snag another set. Wish I could, but money's tight at the moment. In that case, even us TV-guys might not want it.

Once in a while, you'll come across a NICE Craigslist poster who just likes to see his equipment go to a good home. :thmbsp:

Now, if I already have something I'm working on, I hate to dump it due to lack of time or whatever. I usually make the space for an interesting TV set or vintage stereo system even if it's not worth much or is worthless. Another thing to consider is sentimental value.... A few of my friends play guitar quite well, and find it tough to get rid of their dad's gear or guitar. After all, their dads were the people responsible for exposing their talent at a young age.

Just something to consider.

OK... not every week, but I do see them a lot more often than I would have ever though.. There were a few old 50's TV's up for sale a few weeks ago.. I'm pretty positive they were roundies.. I started to post them, but figured I don't see any TV people on the forums from my area..

I'll start posting them when I see them if you are all interested. I do see a lot of really old consoles at estate sales too around here.. I point them out to my wife and tell her how many people on the forum would love that...

I was mostly asking why people get so worked up pover this, and I've seen a lot of you here on the forum say you are passing on a TV because no room, or too far, or similar...

Tough. On one hand, who among us would really save this set? If it were to land on your doorstep tomorrow, could you give it a permanent home? It's big; the cabinet is of finest American particle board and plastic. If it showed up at my house I could maybe make room in the shed for it, maybe for a week or 2, but it couldn't stay here. Recent example: had a Magnavox, very similiar to this, sitting right here in the house earlier this year. Solid state, pre-Philips, nice cabinet, working remote set. You know where it is now? Hint: despite months of trying, NOBODY-REPEAT-NOBODY ON THIS FORUM OR ANYWHERE ELSE I POSTED EVEN RESPONDED TO MY PLEAS TO COME AND RESCUE IT! Sorry, got a little angry for a second there! That set is now gone to TV heaven. There are plenty of sets out there that nobody is going to save. The worst are 21" black and white sets, and any solid state color console. There are a limited number of sets that folks will really go out of their way for: round-tube sets, either bw or color; Predictas; numerous fifties portables; nicer examples of rectangular tube color sets.

Did someone say they'd have given $300 for that set? Really? Lay the cash on the barrelhead, son, and Bryan here will find you a 70s solid state color set! Get your orders in now!

In Bucharest, a guy spotted an old black and white Romanian tv (probably, it was an "Electronica" V.S. 43-611, the 1st Romanian tv, made with French components), but didn't pick it up. The next day he saw the C.R.T. broken and some blood around. I'm not a mean person, but the tv took it's tool. Shees, and the V.S. 43-611 are very rare sets :tears: I had seen only one in my life (it's in a museum).

Worth every penny, unique set. I can think of at least 3 guys in N.VA who could save it, if they wanted to. Oh, I could do it, too. It would be an all-day thing, and include dealing with DC traffic. And in the end, I have no room for it, and the set would be that much further away from anyone else who might be able to give it a home. I do hope this one gets saved...not junk.

I too have driven all over the country for the sake of tv sets, I saw a lot of interesting things along the way. I rode with Bob Galanter through 6 states to get tv sets. In fact he is the one getting radiotvnuts old CTC 4 from MS! I went to Kansas to get my avatar. I say most are willing to travel in other words. The reason we get upset is because we see them being destroyed and would be willing to drive or ship them to get them.

Okay, let's try this: yesterday my wife took my pickup to work so one of her coworkers could give me a tv set. It's pretty much what I expected, which is to say, something I'm not interested in. Well, it was free, and I didn't want to say no. It's an '84 Zenith System 3 Space Command console. I assume it works but I really don't know. These sets could still put out a stunning picture, from my experience. So, anybody want it? If not, I have a rubber mallet, I have a hammer...

well, I wouldn't really do that...at least not if it works! I can't really conceive of anybody out there in AK TV Land wanting it...one sunny day this week I may just leave it out on the curb and see if there are any takers. I would post a picture but, hey, we all know what it looks like, right?

That's the problem, that kid smashing the TV doesn't know the value of anything.

I'm 42, raised by a single parent, worked hard and so on, you appreciate the value of things. If I had the space, I'd love to take that TV in. Mom likes the old consoles and God forbid if the 1982 Zenith ever croaks and cannot be fixed, well, there is another to take it's place. It looks like back in the day, it was close to being a high end set.

I was unemployed for a while this year and now I'm working in auto parts, mainly as a delivery driver. Money is still tight. One of the kids I work with was cleaning the store out and there was an old VCR he was going to throw out. He knew I was into electronics so he asked me if I wanted it so I took it home. It works fine, watched Tom Cruise in "Cocktail" the other night. I now have a bedroom VCR, all I need is a universal remote, I'm all set. I'm glad I saved it from the trash. I know in the Bible it say basically we all and this goes for our favorite things too, return to dust, but there is no good reason to destroy something that works or can be repaired.

I wonder how this kid was raised? Did Daddy (or Mommy) buy him everything and when it broke, always got a new one right away? I'm furious. I know I'm at the sunny side of middle age, but even after a hard day at work carrying brake rotors around, being sore, tired, achy and so forth, I could find the energy to clobber this punk and roll around in the dirt with him for what he did. I hope he has a dream one night where a Chromacolor comes along and sucks him in "Poltergeist" style.

I do understand where you're coming from, but I think it is just the thing that some/many people don't value things and would just smash away instead of at least trying to find a use for the thing or find someone who whats it. I wish I could save more than I can but space is limited and so on. Still, I think there are enough people like us out there that are able to go and save such sets. Still I feel good I did save a VCR from death two days ago.
