My thoughts, too. Must have scared the "Big Dogs" away- Like I said, these puppies usually go higher. I kinda can't believe I got it. Seller called me last nite-it isn't his, he's selling it for a friend, he knew nothin' about it other than it was dirty. Told him PLEASE don't plug it in & try it out, he said he had no intentions of it. Seemed like a nice guy. Seemed kinda interested when I told him what it was-Sony's 1st TV & all.

Hey, that's a good project! You don't want them to be mint right out of the box...what fun is that? This will clean up nice. Still kicking myself...I spotted one of these at a hamfest about 5 years ago, judging by the way they had it stacked along with a bunch of junk I just know I could have got it for nothin'. I didn't even ask. Stupid!

Dawn dish soap is good for cleaning smoke off of delicate things as well. I have had good results with it. I also use those microfiber cloths that WILL NOT scratch anything.

Ah! Nice find! Hopefully you get lucky and its a simple fix. Looks like its untouched and hasn't been used in many years which is a good thing!

Clean-up should be okay. I actually have fun doing it when the results are good enough...

There was one of these listed on eBay a while back, seller said it didn't work.

They had a picture of the back showing a waffle iron cord plugged into it, yes folks, 120 volts AC directly to the set, I think it runs on 12 volts DC!

Well, got the l'il guy in today. Kinda dirty, but all the knobs are there, screen isn't skint up, only a couple tiny dents-but hell, this bad boy IS from 1959-60 or thereabouts. Should I bring it up on a variac, or does that work for solid state stuff ? Or should I leave well enuff alone, just clean it good, & wait til I can take it down to visit Terry ?

Well, I'm no TV guy, that's for sure, but here's what I'm thinking...

The recommendation on an old radio is to always replace the caps before firing up, because you could be putting 200-300 volts of B+ on those old caps. If they're shorted, you could be kissing a transformer goodbye.

TV's, now, they might only have a coupla kilovolts running around in there...

If it were me, I wouldn't plug it in, even to a variac. Too many unobtainium parts in there to risk it.:no:

If you do it right, you could make a killer mouse cage out of that. It has a handle and everything. :D

The B+ is pretty low, so there won't be 300v on any of the caps. Most of the caps are low voltage electrolytics. Mine had a hand full of open cap, but most of them still had good ESR.

I got two of these working last year.Watch out for the horizontal output transistor running very hot,if it does-change it.2SC41.

Other thing to watch out for is sync problems,rolling pix etc.

One of the 8-301's I have had terrible sync.Would "lock"
on a strong signal but then lose sync etc.

I found from looking at the sync part of the
middle board that a resistor had never been fitted in
manufacture.No resistor,no solder,just the holes in the pcb!

From memory it was around 10K.Fitted it and lock was then great!

Maybe check that and also the resistor values are as the schematic
indicates.

A good test of the sync is to reduce the RF gain(contrast) control and see if the picture keeps locked in.Have a video of mine on youtube here

Strangely both of mine have weakish vertical lock if the horizontal hold
is at one extreme or other of the lock in range.Don't know why this is.

Strange you had to add the resistor too.
The difference when I put it in was fantastic.
Seem to remember there was video getting thru the sync
stages without it.Waveforms are on the SAMS schematic.
Getting access to the panel is difficult though to measure anything!!

The other one already had the resistor fitted and sync seems
ok.Both sets lock down to virtually no signal on the screen.
There is some hor osc frequency drift as the TV warms up
in the first 15 mins or so.

Once working the TV seems reliable
