Hello, all. I'm usually an audio poster, but I got a general question for you CRT junkies......

I recently picked up a JVC model AV26375 ,dated December 1987, full set of in and out jacks, including S-VIDEO. I didn't notice the date label until I was loading into the car, after paying 30 clams at a local GW. I was then worried, "Ah,this thing's bound to be worn out"... testing at the store was very limited....

Well, after home hookup to basic cable, and two weeks of tweaking the menu settings, this thing looks dammed good! I was tuned to local PBS station one day... a documentary on insects was on,...during casual viewing,I looked up at a still photo of a tree branch with a walking stick (bug) on it. (digital,macro photo...).......It was like looking out of a window with a telescope!!! The clarity was stunning!!!

So...any comments, opinions, factoids on this JVC product? I'm very pleasantly surprised, and happy with my purchase...Sorry, no photos of the set, my digicam rig still buried after a recent move....

I'd keep that TV around for as long as you can.

And avoid newer JVC TV's. I found one from 2004 just a few weeks ago, and the CRT was SHOT!!

Had a 1992 AV-26 something with Svideo for a long time. The CRT eventually went dead but that was after many years of 24/7 on time. The vertical board crapped out too and I changed the IC.

Pre 2000'ish JVC's are generally good TV's. I've found that the newer ones are cheap made and I too had a later model 27" with a bad CRT. I wound up swapping the tube from an older set and it worked fine.

To think I may have turned this'un down if I had noticed the date before purchase.....The Good Lord DOES look after the Ignorant..(that's me) as well as fools and drunkards.....:yes:

WE shall see how she holds up...I have been lucky with <$50 GW, VV, SA, TV purchases....holding out for a HUGE flat-panel someday..... willhowl:thmbsp:

When I go "used TV shopping", I'll come near buying '70's and '80's sets because I know many of these are easier to repair and have a superior picture to many modern CRT sets. I usually won't look at '90's and newer sets, unless they are free. Of course, I'm always looking for '60's and earlier sets; but, those are getting harder to find by the day.

picked up my now infamous (on the TV forums anyway) '78 Sylvania set at a yard sale in '98 for 5 bux. Best 5 bux i ever spent. the picture on this thing is rediculous, id take pre '90s TVs any day over the new stuff. Good score on the TV, im sure it will last you till u get your garage door sized flat panel:thmbsp:
