Does the oreintation of the crt matter with a magnetic deflection? Weather the key is facing up ,down, or to the side? Will the yolk deflect at any position around the tube?

I don't think it really matters much. I once turned a yoke sideways in a set and waited for a unsuspecting victim to come and watch the set. I laughed my butt off when they tried to figure out what was going on! His head went all sideways and he gave it the oddest look. Too funny. Anyways, I think it will work ok. On a roundie color set, you can reverse the yellow and yellow/black wires at the bottom of the yoke and the picture will be upside down and backwards like a mirror image!

Depending on which way the set is facing, you may get a slight centering change [edit: or raster tilt] in a B&W set, but nothing you could notice. The orientation of the CRT will make no difference at all.

In a color set, the orientation of the CRT as well as the direction the set faces will make a difference in the purity adjustment. The CRT effect is due to the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field. In fact, color CRTs made for the southern hemisphere are different from those made for the northern hemisphere. A color CRT made for the northern hemisphere can be used in sets built for the southern hemisphere by turning it upside down (rotating 180 degrees about its axis). This can be a nuisance since it moves the high voltage connector to the other side, but it has been done in some chassis to use imported tubes. I kid you not!

Tnx for the input. The crt in question doesn't have a HV connector per say, it's a 16GP4. So guess I've got a sweep problem as I can't seem to get the picture all the way over to the right side and have the horizonal stay locked in.

Sounds like you just have to adjust the centering control, and these are usually located just behind the yoke. What brand set is it?

Tis a RCA 6T71

Is there a tab sticking out of the left side, between the yoke & focus assy?
If there is, there should also be locking screw(s) holding it in place. Shrink the picture size down first, and then center it with the tab. The ion trap may also need to be adjusted.
