Just found this 1979 Philips K12 chassis 26" set on the curb!

This set is unique in that it has a 10 watt @ 0,1 THD amplifier driving a two way speaker system with a long-throw 4" woofer in a large transmission line enclosure, giving a 40-16 khz response within 3 db

Sadly, the K12 chassis is quite unreliable, the edge connector of the E-W plug in module is a big problem and virtually all surviving sets (including mine) had their E-W module hardwired to the chassis at some point in their life, and the thick film RGB cathode driver modules (they used SMD transistors, diodes and capacitors on a ceramic substrate with printed resistors) are another weak spot, when they fail they cause the beam current to scream away until the protection circuit trips and shuts off the set... i needed to replace two RGB modules in my set, also, the memory backup nicad battery tends to leak and damage the memory/control module, but luckily, mine was still fine!

But once fixed, they do have a heck of a sound, and 20AX inline CRTs used in 70s Philips sets are extremely durable and they still produce a sharp, gorgeous picture after 30 years of hard use!

Nice save! The K12 chassis was also used here in Australia. The chassis was an interesting halfway point as the K11 evolved to the KT3 chassis.
I know of one set that a local collector has and I'm on the lookout for one of my own.

I have two of those - one with remote control - probably the exact same chassis configuration as yours, but different cabinet - and one without remote control, but with electronic ch selector with LED display and the HIFI sound system.
When it comes to Philips TVs and sound, i think the K35 HIFI is the best of them all. It has a push-pull amplifier with probably 15-20 watts output power and the same bass reflex speaker cabinet as the K12. The sound sometimes makes me wonder why i need to have a stereo system, and the RGB inputs really makes the picture look good too.

apparently, K12 sets here in Italy came in two main variants: one had HiFi sound, infrared remote and 1980s styling like the set i'm talking about, the other has exactly the same cabinet as a top-of-the-line 1976 K11 model, with OSD display, ultrasonic remote, and a non-hifi sound system based on a 4x8" fullrange speaker (i have 2 of them)

As far as i know, your 70s style cabinet with woodgrain bezel wasn't available in Italy

I have the K35 HiFi, it's the one with oval woofers, "spatial sound", beambooster (=scan velocity modulation) in a metallic grey cabinet with a separate glass in front of the screen and the controls on top... sadly, mine has a nasty problem in the power supply.

another Philips set with great sound is the System4 (the last high-quality chassis from Philips), i have a 1985 21CT4829 (21" FSQ vision stereo/TXT) as my daily watcher and even though the 4x8" speakers have no enclosure, the bass response is simply amazing.

K12 diode-split flybacks seems to be quite reliable instead... i've worked on many K12s and none of them had a bad flyback, Philips began to make bad flybacks (as well as bad CRTs) in their late 80s and 90s sets (2B, CP110 and so on)

I know two "main variants" of the K12: The simple, cheap model with 8 ch push-button tuner, the 4x8 fullrange speaker and some really crappy sliding controls for volume and tone that never work as they are supposed to. Interestingly, the picture on those sets are always far worse than the more expensive K12s. The expensive ones has a better looking cabinet, two-speaker hifi sound and electronic ch selectors with 8 or 12 selections.

That's not the K35 Hifi i'm thinking about. The one i have is a Hifi MONO. It has a 4 (or maybe 5?) inch woofer in a bass reflex cabinet like on the K12 and a separate tweeter. The push-pull amplifier is mounted on its own circuit board, and the power is provided by a transformer of the same size that you find in a microwave oven. The speaker grill is detachable and underneath there is chrome plated frames around the speakers and bass reflex port. I guess yours is a K35 Stereo? As far as i know, the "Hifi" in Philips TVs refers to the bass reflex speaker systems. In that way it is either "Hifi" OR Stereo. The only "Hifi Stereo" set i know of is the K12Z.

mine is a K35 with stereo sound and bass reflex woofers, it has a separate stereo amplifier with discrete output transistors, a big heatsink, and a big isolation transformer as it has AV inputs (the K35 was originally a live chassis), it's from 1984

sorry for the poor pictures, it's in my very cluttered barn and i'd have to move about 10 sets to be able to take it outside!

The Philips 26CP2512 have the best sound. This tv have a K12Z chassis.

I think the K12Z was the first chassis to use Philips' new 30AX CRT in 1980, am i right?

early 30AX CRTs had serious manufacturing problems so it's no wonder you had to replace the crt on your set... the 20AX CRT used in older K12 sets seems to be very durable instead.

Does that K12Z have a stereo decoder? Or AV inputs? As far as i can see from the pictures it doesn't have a scart socket - does it have the 6 (or was it 7?) pin DIN AV connector? I guess there were few programs broadcast in stereo when that set were new. The big problem with those old stereo sets is that the stereo broadcast system is - except maybe for a few channels in old cable systems - out of use, so the only way to get them to play in stereo is to use the AV input. I have never been able to find out the official name of that system.

The 26CP2512 has a stereo-decoder. In the Netherlands are the first stereo broadcast in the early 80's. The 26CP2502 is the first Philips tv with hifi-stereo, built in 1980, later came the 26CP2512, this tv has teletext, built in 1981/1982.
