Based on a British program of the same name staring, Jason O'Mara, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli. In a nut shell, it’s 2008, a NYC cop is searching for his girlfriend/coworker who was kidnapped by a serial killer when he’s hit by a car. He wakes up in the street but now it’s 1973. He doesn’t know if he’s in a coma or if he time traveled some how. He’s finding clues that relate to the kidnapping that will take place 35 years in the future. Interesting premise, very well acted but what struck me most was the look, NYC in the 70’s, very Serpico, dirty, funky, and the music. The Stones, David Bowie, The Who, Sweet. It brought me back to my youth. In one scene the main character stops in a record store and seeing all the vinyl comments that in the future LP's are “obsolete, replaced by digital sources, CD’s, tiny iPods and it sounds…worse”. I laughed loud enough I woke my wife. Watch this show!!!

I saw it. At first I thought it was going to stink, but as soon as Harvey showed up it improved!

The funny part about the record store seen is when he was wondering how he could get them all back! He also made a crack about them sounding better than mp3s, cds and dvds! This show has promise!

I had a long day and after dinner found "Life on Mars." It was entertaining enough, especially Harvey Keitel. Everything was from 1973 and they played a lot of period music. Cool. The record store scene was pretty funny. You guys had me looking for audio gear in the background.

I thought it was pretty good even though its a variation of Quantum Leap or Back to the Future. Nonetheless, I am a sucker for time travel stuff.

I loved the transition from Bowie iPod to Bowie 8 Track.

And they mentioned my alma mater twice!

Immediately hooked! I am a sucker for well done period pieces such as Mad Men and this was no exception. They nailed the look too. I fully expected to see Blue Oyster Cult coming out of a local bar. A-, we'll see if that holds.

I've got it on my DVR. Looking forward to it.

The British series had huge ratings and lots of awards. However, they ended the story after something like 21 episodes.

It does have an end.

I wish they'd make that available here, but it looks like they won't as long as ABC is running the series.

I was watching the British show on cable for a while and was excited to see ABC doing it. The scrip for the first episode was almost identical to the pilot for the original. I thought it was great! I've got it on the Tivo list.

I've watched both the BBC series and they were fantastic, there is a sequel set in the 80's called "Ashes to Ashes" which we haven't got in Australia yet

I cant agree its a variation on either of those shows, for me it was more like a John Wyndham novel wrapped up in the Sweeny

Keep watching, it gets better (well the british one did)

The pilot was pretty good and I thought the Gretchen Moll character was interesting. Harvey Keitel is one of my fav actors but I thought his character a stereotype. Overall, a better than average show that I hope will stay that way. It is good to see a cop show that doesn't have the Law and Order moniker.

I have watched the three available episodes online and like this show. The one nit I have to pick is, why does Tyler keep making the same mistake of acting as if he knows certain characters that he knows in the future, relative to 1973? This seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of time travel movies.

I just finished watching the original BBC series. It’s a fantastic show. The ABC series, though well acted is Life on Mars light. The BBC series is faster moving and darker.

Some parts didn’t translate well for the American audience like heading off soccer (football) riots being turned into Hippies being suspected in the murder of a gay Vietnam vet. Also missing is the creepy BBC card girl and blackouts effecting Sam whole world.

The later ABC episodes were an improvement on the first ones and I understand they have ordered four more. Maybe ABC will catch up and move to a better time slot.

I'd would like to see the BBC series. Was it running on BBC America? ABC's is starting to hit its stride. Some of the characters are definitely fitting their roles such as Det. Carling. He will get much bigger work beyond this show. Geez, this guy was one the template for most of my sister's boyfriends through the 70's & (2) husbands!

Surprising though is Keitel's lack of energy. I have a feeling that he will be gone if if the show continues another season. He is just kind of lethargic and does not sell his lines. Still, I am hanging with it. The show has a good vibe and and the music rotation is great. They keep pulling out one-hit wonders for background. I don't think I'd heard this one since the mid 70's. I definitely had forgotten it but knew every word and where I was back then -

The US version starts here next week, looking forward to Harvey Keitel in the Gene Hunt character, looks like a good call to me

Is it back? I've had my DVR set, I haven't checked.

The Gene Hunt character can't leave, his troubles and the introduction of Frank Morgan are key plot points. If they follow the BBC anyway. I like Keitel in the part, Philip Glenister played it about the same way. Gene seemed to go straight for a while.

I heartily agree with you, the Det Sgt Carling in the US version is a great performance, (my sister had the same boyfriend) however by this time in the BBC series Carling has done something (I won't spoil it) very bad.

I decided that what the ABC version lacks is Sam getting the crap scared out of him. Sam's world isn't sturdy as the real world and the lights going out and him leave screaming in a doorless/windowless room or going blind or the card girl telling him "your dead Sam, and all those poor people". Stuff that gives it that edge.

While ABC has done a very good job on all fronts, Sam is having too easy a ride.

I'm glad to see someone else enjoys this show, especially the music. Make me wish there was a Life on Mars music cd!

Series finale next week.

That's right, it's canceled.

Yea I am bummed as well. Rare is the show I like as I despise reality tv.
