Thanks for the heads up. That Wal-Mart player is / was available without copy protection. A way better / cheaper solution than anyone of those after-market filters. :thmbsp:

What's the model of that DVD player?

Its an ILO DVDR04. Made for Wal-Mart. There are firmware updates available that remove copy protection and extend recording life.

I didn't buy it to record, I just needed a DVD player without copy protection because so many of my disks were generating video artifacts on the Admiral.

Cool, I'll try to get one. My Sony seems to make every DVD look like crap on my tube sets. Same problem you were having.

Search on e-bay. They are available fairly regularly. There are firmware updates to remove copy protection that are all over the net. Just google it.

The machine I bought had these updates installed but my impression is it's not hard to do. It's actually a pretty good player, only went for like $125 new or something like that. :thmbsp:

Like I said in another post, I find that the original XBOX decodes the signal so you don't see these artifacts on older sets too. XBOX game consoles are getting really cheap too, I find them for like 50 bucks usually.

Question: similiar artifacts show up on PBS stations, maybe others, caused by information being sent with the signal. There is a simple mod to the set (adding a cap, as I recall) that will fix it. Will that same mod work for this?

That's a good question Bryan, I've had the same problems with the same thing here. What cap would you add? Where?
