One of the few actors whose acting transcended his stardom. He didn't get stuck playing the same character or genres like others to please their fans.

Probably most of us here grew up with icons like Paul Newman who seemed bigger than life and yet if you ever had the chance to meet them in person they were class acts.

Heaven is going to be an interesting place if I ever get there...

A truly wonderful actor, an amazingly benevolent human being and an absolute gentleman.

My neighbors had the opportunity to spend a day and evening with Mr. & Mrs. Newman about 5 years ago. They go on and on about how nice and friendly the Newman's were and made everyone around them feel comfortable and welcome, just as though they'd know you for years.

Paul's portrayal of the Attorney in The Verdict was memorable.

On one hand, there was the quality of his acting. Then there were the 'other' things he did in his life.

Food sales. I saw the figure $250 million somewhere when they mentioned his charitable contributions.

Race car driving, both a hobby and a sideline.

And finally, and most universally, a long and happy marriage to Joanne Woodward, in the face of fame and work.

"A life well lived" is the only phrase I can think of.
And we got to share the joys of his work.

He was a real personality down here with the Baja 1000 after being involved on different levels before actually driving in one himself. After his first trip to Baja he took on some local charities in which he became involved as a lifelong benefactor. He did it with no news conferences or photo shoots to draw attention to himself. He did it because that was where his heart was.

Truly one of a kind...

i met Mr Newman and his wife Joanne at Lime Rock they had a R/v in a roped off area and i said "Mr. Newman..good luck..he and hi wife walked over shook hands and thanked me, Paul walked away and Joann stayed and chatted a few minutes . she said "Paul gets a lil edgy before a race"...such nice down to earth people..you would never know he was a rich and famous couple...RIP In peace to a great great man

Legendary actor, great man, fellow Ohioan. If there is anyone whom I can find no fault with, it's Mr. Newman.

I am so sad. A great actor and a real mensch. I will miss him. I'll think of him every time I eat his spaghetti sauce, fantastic salad dressings, popcorn (the best!), lemonade...
I read his book, "Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good", the story of Newman's Own Foods. It's a great read. He seemed like he would be a great guy to hang out with. I feel like I lost a great friend. See ya, Paul.

A sad day, and wonderful partnerships: Newman/Woodward and professionally Newman/Redford. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Newman and Ms. Woodward about a year ago...nice genuine people.

Also, an excellent driver and racer beyond his 80th year. IIRC he has the track speed record at Limerock here in CT.

The words "legendary" and "charisma" get used too often but when one talks about Paul Newman both are appropriate. He had plenty of the latter and was certainly the former.

My biggest impression? He was a humble man who knew he was gifted but considered himself lucky rather than entitled. He lived his beliefs and then backed them up with action and money - almost always without fanfare and publicity. It was the right thing to do. Because of him the world he left was a little bit better than the world he entered. A good man. A good human being. A star.

Hated to hear this news. Wonderful actor and person.

People knew he raced,but the team he was co-owner and co-founder of,Newman/Haas Racing won 105 Indy(Champ) races,and 8 series championships in 25 years.
Oh,and he was one of the finest actors in film,and a real humanitarian.
RIP,sir,you will be missed.

He was one of a kind. A truly great person. A talented actor and a damn good race car driver. There have been many Hollywood types that have taken up racing but none have been anywhere near successful as PJ Newman. He was winning races driving Bob Sharp Z's well into his 60's. You can't buy that. You have to earn it.

What he said. My favorite Paul Newman film is probably the Hustler. The scenes with Jackie Gleason just seem real. I need to see the Verdict. I think it'll take a while to sink in that Mr Newman is really gone. I used to be addicted to his ginger cookies.

When I think of Paul, I think of The Sting.

That was my wife's and my movie. We saw it numerous times the summer before we married. To us, it was Newman and Redford at their best.:banana:

Unlike many of the popular actors in Hollywood, Newman was a standup individual from everything I have seen. Also, Liberty is a big fan of Fig Newmans.

One of the greats has passed.

Loved his acting and those sauces and dressings were pretty good!

Paul was a gentleman. Surely to be missed. I had the pleasure of meeting him in the 70s.

What a shock! My favorite movie of his was Slapshot. He sure will be missed!

I was lucky enough to shake the man's hand and say a few words back when Mario Andretti drove for him and Carl Haas. The team was at Elkhart lake and I was wandering around the pits when he strolled over and actually asked me how I was enjoying the qualifying...almost wet myself. Never one to get star struck I almost couldn't speak...I thought meeting Mario was cool but meeting "Butch" himself was the tops! The man will be missed!

I think they are both great men who deserve all the good fortune they have had.

A great actor who could successfully and convincingly play a variety of characters. Never one to go out of his way to draw attention to himself. And a man who, in his later years, chose not to slow down but to press the accelerator down even a bit harder. He chose to remain vibrant, vital and participate in life to the fullest until the very day he absolutely could not any more.
