I installed a nos 11sp22 CRT in this set since the old one was very very dim. Well. the New one is bright and sharp but I cannot get the convergence right for the life of me. I must've spent 3 hours trying everything i know of and its still awful...

I mounted the static magnet assembly block 1.5" from the CRT base as the service manual instructs....and the purity ring is in the right place. Its so frustrating, I have no idea where to go from here. And when I get the convergence to a point thats *almost* right the raster is tilted and misaligned.

What gives? Am I missing something here? Since its an inline, this should be easy!

it is never easy! even the old delta guns are getting harder-or i am getting older.take a break and walk away from it.when you get back,it will happen.set up more than a few of those and they can be a nightmare.they do have a pretty picture though.

What adjustments have you tried with the deflection yoke? Have you tried sliding it back a little, if that helps you can stick some wedges in there.

I slid the purity magnet /assembly/and yoke back and forth and itd doesn't change much.

I also used an external degausser just in case but no luck.

Man, that IS a real head-scratcher....

Thanks, Andy. Wasn't sure if I should mess around with those glued magnets. Tomorrow's another day! What a relief though-- thought I might've shorted the color circuits or something....wasn't thinking straight.

The NOS 11SP22 came from AK member Dave A. who had it in its original box all these years! I'm excited to use the TV again, since although he shipped me the tube months ago, I got frustrated and haven't messed with it in a long time.

Shame it only has a short time left until it'll be considered a Sorta-Porta-Color (tethered to a converter box)

OK update.... I tweaked the magnets which were glued down and now convergence is perfect....BUT (and its a big but) the purity is a mess and won't set. WTF? I never had so much trouble setting up a TV. The purity magnets affect the purity, but no way i set them seems to be right. The colors are way way off and its a total mess.

Try degaussing it {if you haven't already} then try purity again. I wonder if the shadow mask is bent like they're discussing on the other thread in here?

Try to disconnect the blue and green guns. I forget if they are hard-wired or spade connected somewhere. Then degauss with a degauss ring. If you don't have one I can send mine for loan. Then try the rings for a pure red raster.

Well I slid the yoke back and got a pure red raster with the other drives all the way down. But... The purity only adjusts correctly so that the raster is down about an inch therefore cutting off the bottom of the picture, no matter how i set height or linearity. Otherwise, perfect pic!

Heres a couple of pictures of where I'm at. Darn thing has great color and is much much brighter thn the old tube was. Just a bit of a struggle.

Turns out that the $269.95 price tag comes to $1707 in year 2007 money.

Guess the man I bought it from had rich parents back then. He said he was 18 when he got it, and he used it all the time over the years. (he also had a bunch of old radios and tv's but wanted way too much for em)

Anyways, its kind of relatable to computers today. For my 18th birthday I got a brand new macbook pro which I still use. It cost about the same, maybe a little more, and my dad got it for me.

When I was a kid in high school, I had a clerk job at the local Osco drugstore. We had an electronics aisle with clock radios, etc. and Portacolors that I sold. An all GE aisle I belive. Always loved them. And when I worked the photo counter, I pushed Yashica GL cameras. Still have mine from then.

Portacolors deserve their special place in history.

Oh yeah I'm planning on keeping it for as long as possible. Looks great consmetically and now functionally. Whats the favor, Dave?

Awesome looking Porta-Color! I'm glad you got it fixed up, the purity can be very annoying at times, this thread made me aware I wasn't up to speed on the setup of these. I took mine apart to have a little "learning session" Now I know. Again, great job!

When setting the purity on those inline tubes, I think I recall that you should use the green screen and not a solid red screen like used for the delta gun tubes. I would try to get purity as close as possible then move on to convergence. Looks like you got it though. I was never a big fan of those tubes, but the little porta color sets just keep on working. Amazing for a GE even if they wern't the greatest of pictures.

Hi John, whats funny about these sets is that they keep on working as new on the old caps. Yeah, they probably be swapped out since their older than they ought to be, but I run mine a lot and haven't noticed any issues. I checked mine to make sure none of the filters were getting warm after some time, but they stayed cool. (if you do this test, be advised that some ambient heating due to close proximity to the tubes is normal)

I thought mine was a 1966 because the original crt was dated 52nd week of 66. You know, this set was probably a '67 model.

As far as caps go in these, I've only had a problem with a few. One being the .1@1000vdc right next to the HOT. There is also another one right next to the hight control right at the edge of the board that goes bad, it is a .047@400vdc. There is one more that I replace for safety, one of the "white time bomb" porcelain caps in the power supply, a .039@150vac {I use a .039@600vdc instead}. My sets have the 10HD and the 10HE chassis, if you don't find these caps in yours then overlook this post, these are just the troublemakers that I have found.
